The worst news turned out to come true for the Giants, who suffered a devastating blow when they learned defensive end Osi Umenyiora will miss the entire 2008 season after suffering a left knee injury in Saturday night's preseason loss to the Jets.
It's a potentially crushing blow to the defending Super Bowl champions.
There was hope that this injury would not be so severe, as X-rays taken Saturday night were negative and Tom Coughlin said he was told by the team's medical personnel that Umenyiora had not experienced any ligament damage.
That was not the case. Umenyiora underwent an MRI exam and the results showed enough damage to warrant season-ending surgery.
Umenyiora, the Giants only Pro Bowl player last season, went down with 10:48 remaining in the second quarter when on a pass rush he was pushed by left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Umenyiora's left foot appeared to stick in the field turf and he went down instantly.
Umenyiora, 26, might be the team's best player but, fortunately for the Giants, he is not their most indispensable one. The logical course of action for the team is to move strong side linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, which is his natural position. Kiwanuka last year moved to linebacker – a position he never played in his football career –in order to get him on the field. He was lost for the Super Bowl run to a broken leg. On passing situations in the nickel package, Kiwanuka shifts out of his linebacker stance and moves up to play defensive end. He has said in the past it would not take him much time, if any, to move back to the line if the club determined that was the best spot for him.
Renaldo Wynn is another option to move into the starting lineup if the team is not willing to shift Kiwanuka back to end. The Giants this off-season added to their depth with the signing of Wynn, a 33-year old 12-year NFL veteran who has started 128 games in his career but two since 2005 with the Redskins.
The other option for the Giants is to move Dave Tollefson, a second-year player from Northwest Missouri State, into Umenyiora's starting right end spot. The Giants are unlikely to opt for that option.
Either way, it's a huge loss to the Giants defense. Umenyiora led the team in sacks the past three years, supplanting Michael Strahan as the top pass-rusher on the roster.
