Brian Townsend Admits to Multi-Accounting

Curtom (Check me out!)
Brian “SBrugby” Townsend, a well respected Full Tilt red pro, has admitted to using multiple accounts on both PokerStars and Full Tilt. Full Tilt has already suspended Brian from Red Pro status over the next six months. PokerStars has yet to make a decision as to what course of action to take.
This is really starting to get under my skin. First, it seems that people, no matter what the profession, seem to always want to win at any cost. That is simply not part of my make up. If I cannot win fair and square I want no part of spoils of victory. There is no pride in winning something when you violate the rules. In this case the rules are clear.
Second, I happen to like Brian Townsend and respect his game. He has done well both online and in high stakes live cash games. A player of his caliber has no business cheating to begin with. It cheapens his brand and only brings more scrutiny to an already tedious situation with online poker.
Multi-accounting is clearly outlawed in the terms of service for all of the major sites. It’s puzzling that he would even attempt this considering he has a lot more to lose than to gain from making such a dumb decision. To his credit Townsend did come out with an apology and alleges that he never used the accounts for collusion. Obviously that is up to those that play with him whether that is true or not. The following is a brief excerpt from Brians public apology:
“I hope that people can not only look to me for poker education but also for the way to live their lives. I made a mistake and I am willing to take responsibility for it. I am willing to stand up and face the music. I apologize to entire the online community. I will never partake in this type of activity in the future. This post should act as a full admission of my guilt, and I sincerely apologize to anyone that I’ve wronged.”
Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo was busted by PokerStars last year for the same offense. Justin is now with Bodog.

Brian Townsend - Multi-Accounting

812b4ba287f5ee0L.jpg
In a recent blog confessional, Cardrunners pro Brian Townsend has admitted to playing under two different poker accounts on Stars and Tilt. He had been using the aba30 and sbrugby names, then with the fulltilt deal, he switched to a red pro under his name. His ‘illegal’ aliases were: Stellarnebula on FTP and makersmark66 on Stars.
He offers an open, honest, and sincere apology about his actions. Frankly, while it is against the rules, this is probably the most common example of ‘bending’ the online poker rules. I’ve had multiple accounts on different sites, just because I didn’t like my screen name.
For a recognizable pro, the advantage to playing annonymously is understandably tempting. Also, in Brian’s case he was moving down in limits, and was worried what people would think about that. So to protect his ego, and get action at the lower limits, he played under different names.
He stated that his FT red pro status is being suspended for 6 months (meaning no 100% rakeback) and that he is contributing $25k of his ‘cardrunners distributions’ to a charity tbd.
He is a class act. This shouldn’t be that big of a deal. It speaks to a larger problem, with how easy it is to create accounts - set up different bank accounts, different names, whatever. I don’t know how you can address it outside of using social security numbers or something crazy to identify people.

If he's just using the accts to play anonymously, and not
play at the same table, or in the same tourney - I don't
see what the big deal is.

Equivalent as going to a live game in a disguise so no one recognizes you.

Normally I say no big deal, but he went against the rules and cheating is cheating. no harmful intent but you have to use your head better than this.

Then you might not play enough to see the edge there. Most of those High stake players play with each other long enough to know other player style.

For instance I play with guy A, b, c and D so often and I know what they can do also they know my style and Know what I can do.

Then now I use new Nickname and play with them. I still know all the style but they have no Idea who I am???? I can make a move on them and get pay off easy for Huge Pot.....
You see there....

To be honest though, I cant blame the pros wanting to play at the tables under an alias at times.

90% of online poker players are cheaters. Poker player in general will steal cheat and lie even when they are up a ton I ran a poker room for a long time and I have seen everything. From a guy that won 10k in a night trying to steal $50 chips from another player. I got bookies calling me looking for player that owe money guess what everyone of them are poker players.

Yet another online blackeye as if it needed one. Problem is this is like stealing a pack of gum compared to the murder that really goes on. How long will the ignorance last?

Guy has deal with Card Runners that pays well

Guy gets paid by Full Tilt

Guy is famous online pro

Same guy needs multiple accounts on the same site....

What is the matter with these people. If you play live you cant wear a mask, so if you become a "known" online pro with all the perks that go with it....

You have to move to a higher level of professionalism and responsilibity

A lot of these guys just dont get it and could contribute to a real decline if regular players ever figure out they have no chance with the online pros even cheating

online poker is FILLED with cheating and collusion why would you expect the guys who make their living at it to be any different.. I know for a fact most of the major online tournament winners play with large pools of people sitting on instant messenger and any time one of them is not in the hand at the same table they are giving away their cards and shit.. Honest and legit poker players can not be long term winners online. plain and simple.
