Thunderstorm on the way in Philadelphia

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies open a three-game series in Philadelphia Friday, as long as mother nature allows them to.

There is a chance of 32 percent chance for rain and a chance for thunderstorms expected for right around the time the first pitch should be thrown. There is also a 12 mph wind blowing across he field towards first base.

The projected starts are Clayton Kershaw (2-1, 4.41 ERA) for the Dodgers and Roberto Hernandez (2-1, 3.98) for the Phillies. The Dodgers are -178 favorites.


Underdogs have a solid day on the diamond

Another day on the diamond and another solid day for underdogs in major league action Thursday.

Underdogs went 8-4 against the runline Thursday, hitting at a mark of nearly 67 percent.

The dogs performance was highlighted by the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Jays were +136 dogs heading into the game.


Two worst money teams Red Sox, Rays, start series Friday

The two worst money teams in baseball start a three-game series Friday when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Boston Red Sox.

The Rays, who were picked by many to win the American League East this season, are dead last in the division and because of this are the worst money team in the majors at -$1,418.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox seem to be suffering from a World Series hangover. They have lost seven in a row and are second to last in money at -$1,269.

The projected starters for Friday night are John Lackey (5-3, 4.01 ERA) for the Red Sox and Chris Archer (3-2, 4.59 ERA) for the Rays.


Hendriks gets call to start for Blue Jays on Friday

Thursday was a day for the Toronto Blue Jays to celebrate a three-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

It also was a day for right-hander Liam Hendriks to celebrate.

Before left-hander Mark Buehrle allowed two runs over seven strong innings against the Sox, manager John Gibbons disclosed that Hendriks will be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to start Friday night against the Oakland Athletics.

Hendriks, 25, has a chance to stay in the rotation, too, as the No. 5 starter. Because of days off in the schedule, the Jays haven't needed a fifth starter since Dustin McGowan lost the job on May 14.

In nine games at Buffalo, Hendriks posted a 1.48 ERA and 36 strikeouts while walking only three batters in 48 2/3 innings. For now, he gets the nod in the rotation over veteran Todd Redmond, who started 14 games last season and has pitched in long relief this year.

The Jays will have to make a roster move to open a spot for Hendriks. Lefty reliever Rob Rasmussen could be optioned to Triple-A, or the Jays could opt to designate struggling reliever Esmil Rogers for assignment after he posted a 6.97 ERA in 20 2/3 innings.


Braun's side ailment adds to Brewers' injury woes

The Milwaukee Brewers just can't seem to keep their top players healthy.

Ryan Braun, who was on the 15-day disabled list earlier this month due to a right oblique strain, left the Brewers' 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves after two at-bats Thursday because of tightness in his right side.

The right fielder was listed as day-to-day, and he will be evaluated further Friday.

"Oblique again. Oblique soreness," manager Ron Roenicke said when asked about Braun after the game. "There was concern he was going to hurt it."

Braun is hitting .212 (7-for-33) with two doubles and a homer since coming off the DL on May 13. For the season, he is batting .289 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 31 games.

The Brewers are already without cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez, sidelined since May 10 because of a strained left hamstring. The third baseman doesn't think that he will be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list when eligible Monday.


Braves' Walden out at least three more weeks

Jordan Walden won't have a short stay on the disabled list, his projected return now pushed back until at least mid-June.

The Atlanta Braves right-hander reliever, who hasn't pitched since May 4 because of a strained left hamstring, is still a couple of weeks away from being cleared to throw off the mound.


Giants' Casilla suffers Grade 2 strain legging out grounder

The San Francisco Giants will be without their valuable setup man Santiago Casilla for about four weeks due to the right hamstring strain he suffered Wednesday night running out a grounder he hit with two out in the ninth inning.

Casilla underwent an MRI after the game and was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain. Grade 1 is mild. Grade 2 is medium and Grade 3, the most severe, is a tear.

"We were shocked how fast he was going," manager Bruce Bochy said before the Giants and Rockies played a game that was suspended in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied at 2. "I don't think that hamstring's ever seen that type of speed from legs."

Ran last time around the track against a tougher field at Aqueduct. The move down in class should suit her well. There's something to be said for a change of surface. Last race this animal didn't like the terrain, but if you look two back on the grass at Aqueduct, there was a great effort. I look for that again today.

HIT SQUAD - Difficult to keep following this kind of 'hanger' horse. ISLAND CANDY - Finished second in her most recent effort with a somewhat easily forgotten fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this bunch. STAGE NAME - Didn't look so good last time. Probably won't do much running in today's race. When examining today's class figure, she will have to notch a better speed rating than last race out to battle in this turf route.

Has the best in the field for this distance-surface. Have to give this gelding a shot. Ran a sharp race last time out within the last 30 days. DOS DE BASTOS - This gelding is in top physical condition right now. Ran second last out and comes back rapidly. You have to like this fine animal changing from dirt to turf for the first time. He finished on the board on a sluggish dirt track on May 3rd. A sign he may take to turf. In the last race at Arlington this horse finished ahead of today's M/L choice. Potential play if the public follows the oddsmaker's morning line. ROMAN OFFICER - The rest of the bunch may trail this entrant all the way around the track.

URBAN COOL - Tough to take this horse at the price after the result (fourth) in the last affair. YOUVE GOT A FRIEND - Tough to play at 8/1 odds after the last two showings. The Equibase speed figures are going downward. I'm not betting on this steed off of that trend. FLAT GONE - Based on the pace scenario in this race, this animal doesn't fit in here. With a single front-runner and this horse having to race from behind, he sure has a tough assignment. 8/1 is too short of a value to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back efforts. Will probably come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved sharply to the front end recently. Had one of the most respectable Equibase Speed Figures of this group of horses in her last contest. CLEVERLY BEVERLY - Looks to have a quite good class edge based on the recent company kept. She has been running very well and the Speed Figures are among the most respectable in this field. LIL ORPHAN ELLIE - Has run soundly when racing a dirt sprint race. Ordonez and Antongeorgi have a good win percent together.

OAKIE FLASH - Sub-par try in the last race at Mountaineer was due to the off-going (he ended up seventh). Should do better right here on a fast track. I like this gelding. Has the uppermost (EPS) earnings per start in here. JEFF'S KITTEN - A horse coming back this promptly after a sharp effort is a good sign. I like horses that return to a similar class level after dropping at least 5 class pts like this one did in the last race. I believe he'll be competitive at this class level.

Top pick: #5 (CORINTHIAN SUMMER) (3-1) - Colt was beaten a length racing at this tag and trip at Gulfstream on April 12th. It was his first start in 10 1/2 months and he had some serious traffic issues in that solid return effort. He's worked four times since, including a trio at Saratoga and is the horse to beat.

2nd pick: #3 (Romans Paradise) (5-2) - Lightly-raced gelding has early speed and has finished third in both starts in 2014 facing tougher. Three-year-old by "Hard Spun" was away for almost five months and trainer George Weaver adds both blinkers and John Velazquez. A very strong win candidate.

3rd pick: #7 (Inventor's Gate) (8-1) - Home-bred raced both wide and evenly at Gulfstream on March 30th in his first since debuting last August at Saratoga. Working fast since, trainer Mark Hennig drops him to a new low and colt can impact at a big price.
