KEY STAT: Frankfurt’s league matches this season average 3.8 goals per game

EXPERT VERDICT: Hoffenheim, the great entertainers, had conceded three goals or more in four straight matches before last weekend’s trip to Dortmund. Their 1-0 defeat there was uncharacteristically low-scoring but we can expect a more flamboyant scoreline against Frankfurt, whose 14 matches this season have produced 53 goals.

RECOMMENDATION: Over 3.5 goals

KEY STAT: Ten of Caen’s 14 points have been secured in away games

EXPERT VERDICT: After seven straight home wins, it’s hard to see past a routine Lyon romp against relegation-threatened Caen. Caen concede too many goals – they’ve shipped eight in their last two – and haven’t kept a clean sheet since September. Their away record is better than their home form and both teams have scored in each of their last ten.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Queens have lost only one of their last eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: All’s not well at Ibrox and Rangers won’t find it easy at Palmerston. The borderers have won four in a row at home and their unbeaten run was only ended at the weekend by Hearts. They led 2-1 at Rangers in August before succumbing in the second half but Gers’ form is mixed with two losses in the last four.

RECOMMENDATION: Queen of the South

KEY STAT: Almeria have lost six of their last seven league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Almeria are just one of two teams in Spain’s top flight yet to register a home win and that spells massive trouble with record-hunting Real coming to town. Real made it an astonishing 19 wins in a row when they demolished Ludogorets 4-0 on Tuesday and are simply irresistible. A 15th win to nil for the season is very much on the cards.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Brighton have drawn nine of their 20 league games

EXPERT VERDICT: In a combined 40 games this season, Brighton and Millwall have managed just seven wins between them. The Lions did gain an impressive point at Bournemouth in their last away game but have won just once since August, while Brighton are faring little better, winning just once in their last 13.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

NHL Grand Salami - December

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Panthers (11-8) at Red Wings (17-6)

Date: December 12, 2014 7:30 PM EDT

The only time the Detroit Red Wings failed to earn at least one point in their last nine games was during a visit from the Florida Panthers earlier this month.

The Red Wings seek to avenge that defeat and end a three-game home losing streak to the Panthers on Friday night when they return to Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit (17-6-6) is 7-1-1 in its last nine games, with the lone regulation loss coming Dec. 2. The Red Wings' attempted rally from a three-goal deficit in the third period fell short in a 4-3 defeat.

Gustav Nyquist scored the game's final goal with 59 seconds left. The loss is also one of just three regulation defeats this season at Joe Louis, where the Red Wings are 11-3-3, and their only one in the last seven games there.

Detroit was denied a third consecutive home win Wednesday and its fourth in a row overall despite outshooting Toronto 40-16 in regulation. The Maple Leafs scored on two shootout attempts against Jimmy Howard in a 2-1 victory.

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was pleased with his team's effort despite the result.

"We got a point. They stole two points, but I'll take it every night," he said. "If you play like that, you're going to win."

Florida (11-8-7) is 1-1-1 since its visit to Detroit and gave up the tiebreaking goal with 1:54 remaining in a 4-2 loss in St. Louis on Monday. The Panthers rallied from a two-goal, first-period deficit, and Aaron Ekblad had the tying goal with 5:06 left.

"Tough way to lose," goaltender Roberto Luongo told the team's official website. "We battled back and carried most of the play. Heartbreaker to lose like that. Obviously, the first (period) was unacceptable. We weren't happy with the way we played. We showed some character the way we came back against a tough team in a tough building."

Ekblad has three goals and four assists in a five-game point streak to open this month. The No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft scored a goal in his first visit to Joe Louis, which is just across the Detroit River from his hometown of Windsor, Ontario.

Vincent Trocheck had a career-high three points in the victory with one goal and two assists, but hasn't registered any points in the past three games.

Nick Bjugstad, meanwhile, scored his fourth goal in three games Monday and has two assists in that stretch. He doesn't have a point in his last three matchups with Detroit.

Nyquist will try to extend a four-game goal scoring streak against the Panthers while leading the Red Wings to their first home win in the series since April 1, 2012. The teams have split their last four overall matchups.

Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist in the latest meeting, and has seven goals and 12 assists in 14 career matchups. He has seven goals and four assists in his eight games since returning from a groin injury but hasn't been able to re-ignite Detroit's power play.

The Red Wings are 0 for 10 in their last three games after converting at 32.8 percent (19 for 58) in the previous 14. They have killed off 15 power plays in the past three contests and face a Panthers team 2 for 21 with a man advantage in its last nine games.

Florida has also been effectively killing penalties, allowing just one goal in the past 25 times it has been short-handed.

Oilers, worst home team, faces off against Ducks
Justin Hartling

The Edmonton Oilers have a .367 winning percentage at home, which is easily the worst mark in the NHL. To make matters worse for the Oilers, they host the Anaheim Ducks whose .714 road winning percentage is second best in the league.

Edmonton and Anaheim met for the first time this season on Wednesday, with the Ducks winning 2-1.

The Oilers host the Ducks Friday.

Flames unbeaten this season with no days rest
Justin Hartling

The Calgary Flames have played on back-to-back nights three times this season and are a perfect 3-0 in those games. The Flames have outscored opponents 9-3 in those games.

It's not as if Calgary has been facing bad teams in this situation as they picked up wins against Edmonton, Chicago and San Jose.

Calgary hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday.

NBA Preview: Lakers (6-16) at Spurs (16-6)

Date: December 12, 2014 9:30 PM EDT

Kobe Bryant's frustrations with the Lakers' dismal start to the season - specifically his teammates - are now well-known and documented.

How his criticisms affect the team should be evident Friday night when Los Angeles visits the San Antonio Spurs.

Bryant practiced for the first time this month Thursday and unleashed a profanity-filled rant toward his teammates, according to a video that surfaced online. Bryant called out specific teammates for lack of effort.

He downplayed his outburst following practice.

"I was just being myself," Bryant said. "I don't know if it helps them, but it obviously raises the intensity level. It was a tough practice for them."

The Lakers (6-16) won their first game in four tries prior to the aforementioned practice, beating Sacramento 98-95 on Tuesday. Bryant led the way with 32 points, while Carlos Boozer added 15 and nine rebounds off the bench.

Los Angeles shot less than 40 percent from the field for the seventh time this season, but managed to keep its opponent under 100 points - a rare feat for the worst defensive team in the NBA. The Lakers have held opposing offenses under the century mark just six times and rank last in the NBA with 110.1 points allowed per game.

That sort of effort seldom succeeds against the Spurs (16-6), who have proved their ability to move through defenses, even without their star players.

Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard all sat out Wednesday, yet San Antonio still rolled to its sixth straight home win, 109-95 over lowly New York. Seven Spurs scored in double figures in their absence.

"I haven't been this pleased in a while," coach Gregg Popovich said. "I just saw a lot of guys who haven't played much play the fundamental game; they executed well. Guys that haven't played are going to try hard, that's not that big of a deal, but their execution was really good."

Parker (left hamstring) and Leonard (bruised right hand) remain questionable, but Duncan and Ginobili are expected to return Friday to boost a Spurs defense that ranks among the NBA's best with 94.3 points allowed and a 43.8 opponent field goal percentage.

San Antonio has taken eight of the last 10 matchups with the Lakers, and each of the last four in which Bryant has played.

"I'm looking forward to this one," Bryant said. "San Antonio, that's the blueprint of how to play, in terms of how to scheme together, how they move the ball. Everybody understands their purpose and they do it really well."

Bryant needs 30 points to tie Michael Jordan on the NBA's all-time scoring list. He ranks second in the league with 25.5 points per game this season, and has topped the 30-point mark six times.

His last game against the Spurs, though, was one he'd rather forget. Bryant was held to a season-low nine points on 1-of-14 shooting in a 93-80 home loss on Nov. 14.

Lack of offense has made Nets hot under play
Justin Hartling

The Brooklyn Nets have not been coming close to sniffing the total as of late, going 1-8 over/under in their past nine games. Those nine games have seen the Nets average 88.9 points per game, scoring less than 90 on five occasions.

Brooklyn hosts the bottom-dwelling Philadelphia 76ers Friday.

Magic's defensive game a boon for under plays
Justin Hartling

The Orlando Magic are carrying an over/under record of 1-6 in their past seven contests. Orlando is averaging a mere 93 points per game during that span, but the Magic defense is also only allowing 97 ppg.

The Magic will travel to Atlanta Friday.

Slumping Pistons no better at window than court
Justin Hartling

The Detroit Pistons are currently on a 13 game losing streak straight up, which has equaled a poor 3-10 against the spread record. In the three games that the Pistons managed to cover, they were +8.5, +9.5 and +10 respectively.

Detroit will travel to Phoenix to take on the Suns Friday.

'On the hardwood'

The NBA takes center stage Friday with five of the twelve scheduled games non-conference ones. History suggest the Eastern Conference teams are in for a rough ride. Our trusted NBA Database tells us Eastern Conference teams have been duds running the hardwood against Western Conference opponents this season posting a 39-84 SU record with a cash draining 55-68 mark at the betting window. Wizards are the only Eastern Conference team playing tonight with a winning record in these affairs which stands at 3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS. That may take a hit as they're hosting Clippers who are 6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS vs the Eastern Conference. In other action, Bulls 3-5 SU, 1-7 ATS in non-conference games entertain Blazers hitting the hardwood at 10-0 SU, 6-4 ATS. Hornets 1-9 SU, 3-7 ATS host the Grizzlies at 5-2 SU/ATS, Cavaliers 2-5 SU/ATS in non-conference clashes visit Pelicans with it's 2-4 SU, 3-3 ATS record, Heat owning a 3-5 SU/ATS ledger head into Utah to take on Jazz who sit at 3-6 SU, 5-4 ATS. Finally, Pistons a dreadful 1-10 SU, 5-6 ATS try to pick up a rare non-conference win in Phoenix against the Suns who are 6-4 SU/ATS vs the Eastern Conference.

First true road game for State squad that won its last three games, all by 17+ points- they split pair of neutral floor games, beating Alabama, losing to Maryland by 9.

College Basketball: Streaks, Tips, Notes -

Michigan at Arizona December 13, 05:15 EST

The Wildcats off an easy 87-56 victory over Utah Valley cashing as -27 point favorite put a season opening 9-0 (5-4 ATS) streak and the nations fifth-longest home stretch (27-0 SU, 17-9 ATS) on the line when they host Michigan Wolverines at McKale Center in Tucson Saturday afternoon. Wolverines with a slew of new players dotting the roster losing two straight including a shameful loss to then 2-5 NJT Highlanders won't give Wildcats much resistance. Expect both Wildcat streaks to be extended as they move to 5-0 ATS vs Big Ten opponents while Wolverines fall to 2-7-1 ATS away from Ann Arbor in December non-conference games.

Gonzaga at UCLA December 13, 10:00 EST

The Bruins returning only three players that had any significant minutes last season face a huge test when Gonzaga pays a visit to Pauley Pavilion Saturday night. The Zags are loaded this season thanks to a strong foundation of returning players including arguably the best pair of shooters in college basketball in Kevin Pangos nailing 48.4% from the field, 40.0% from long range with Gary Bell Jr. dropping 45.0% of his shots, 43.9% from outside. Zags with five players dropping double digits helping the team net 84.4 points/game the Bruins current 8-0 (4-4 ATS) streak on home court is at risk. However, Bruins pretty solid on the defensive end (69.4 PPG) you do bet Zags at some risk as they're 2-6 ATS away from home scoring =< 70.0 points and just 2-9 ATS vs Pac-12 opponents

Where the action is: Early money moving big-name bowl game odds
By JASON LOGAN

Odds for the big-name college football bowl games have only been open for short time and already early action has dictated a few notable moves.

We talk with Peter Childs, about that first rush of money, where it landed and how the books are adjusting.

Cotton Bowl: Baylor Bears at Michigan State Spartans – Open: +1, Move: +2.5

Oddsmakers opened with Baylor, fresh off a College Football Playoff shunning, as a 1-point favorite versus Michigan State and immediately took money on the favorite, bumping this spread as high as BU -2.5. But according to Childs, he first considered opening the Cotton Bowl as a pick’em.

On one side, you can say the Bears will come out to prove they belong among the Final Four vying for the national title. And on the other, you can say that Baylor will come out flat after the disappointment of not making the playoff cut.

“I hate this spot for Baylor,” says Childs. “They were all in to get into the playoffs and it’s all they’ve talked about. Hell, they campaigned for it and hired media companies to market for it.”

“They have to be disappointed being here and that lack of motivation is a factor, in my opinion,” he adds. “I don’t understand all the support for Baylor in the past few hours, but we had to move it with the amount of action we’ve seen.”

Sugar Bowl: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Alabama Crimson Tide – Open: -9, Move: -10

The No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff opened just under a double-digit favorite versus No. 4 Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl – the semifinals for the national title game. Money hit the Tide and pushed the number to -10. However, that adjustment prompted action on the Buckeyes, following their one-sided stunner against Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game. Alabama -10 (-105) / Ohio State +10 (-115).

“So far, good two-way action at the number 10,” says Childs. “Solid number and I don’t see this one moving all that much. We’ve seen quite a bit of Ohio State moneyline bets, to the point where we lowered them down from +280 to +270.”

Chick-Fil-A Bowl: Mississippi Rebels at TCU Horned Frogs – Open: -3, Move: -3.5

Texas Christian is another Big 12 team with a chip on its shoulder heading into bowl season. The Horned Frogs were bumped from the Final Four by Ohio State, despite ranking No. 3 entering Week 15 and thumping Iowa State 55-3. They did everything they could do and weren’t even given a New Year’s Day time slot, instead settling for a New Year’s Eve game with Ole Miss.

A flood of action forced bookmakers to move off the key number. They first adjusted the juice on TCU, going -3 (-115) trying to entice money on the discounted Rebels. But it wasn’t enough and they made the move to -3.5.

“Moving off the number -3 takes a lot of money, basically all the early money was on TCU but at 3.5, we’re starting to see a bit of Mississippi money come in,” says Childs.

Much like its Big 12 brethren, Baylor, Texas Christian could be motivated to show up the selection committee or be completely disinterested in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl after having its national championship hopes dashed.

“I see this like I do the Baylor game, I question TCU’s motivation here,” adds Childs. “They wanted to be in the playoffs, not this bowl game. Mississippi will also have strong crowd support with this game being in the South, in Georgia (Georgia Dome).”

NCAAF line watch: Three bowl bets you shouldn't wait on
By STEVE MERRIL

With the matchups set and the odds on the board for college football bowl season, Steve Merril tells you which bowls you should bet right away in order to get the best value. Here are two bowl spreads and a total to bet now:

CAMELLIA BOWL

South Alabama Jaguars (-2.5) vs. Bowling Green Falcons

The line reversed in the this bowl after Bowling Green opened as a 1-point favorite and early money quickly came in on South Alabama, making the Jaguars 2.5-point favorites. This line will likely rise higher and hit the key number of 3, so shrewd bettors should jump on this game now.

Bowling Green is one of the worst teams to make a bowl game this season. The Falcons come into this game in a tailspin, losing three straight games and four of their past six games overall. Bowling Green has been dreadful versus the pointspread and it is just 2-7-1 ATS during its last 10 games.

South Alabama is playing in its first bowl game and it gets to stay in state, which gives the Jaguars a nice edge. Bettors should play this game now and take the best of the number.

ARMED FORCES BOWL

Houston Cougars vs. Pittsburgh Panthers (-3)

Pittsburgh was briefly a 2.5-point favorite over Houston and early money quickly came in on the favorite, moving the line up to -3. This line will probably tick up higher above the key number at some point, so Pitt bettors should get on this game soon.

Pittsburgh holds a significant offensive edge in this game and since Houston has a below-average defense, bettors will certainly favor the better offense in this matchup.

Houston’s best win this season came at Memphis when it was fortunate to be on the receiving end of five turnovers. Other than that gift-wrapped win, the Cougars beat a slew of losing teams. Take Pittsburgh now before the line goes higher.

MILITARY BOWL

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Cincinnati Bearcats (50.5)

Virginia Tech and Cincinnati are complete opposites. The Hokies have a terrible offense and a very good defense. The Bearcats have a potent offense and a terrible defense. This total was probably a difficult one for the oddsmakers to set. The total opened 50.5 at most books.

Cincinnati is currently a 3-point favorite over Virginia Tech. The Bearcats opened at -3.5 and the line drop is because early money came in on Virginia Tech. This could indicate future money on the Under as well since a low-scoring game would favor the Hokies.

You can definitely make a case that Virginia Tech/Under and Cincinnati/Over are somewhat correlated in this game.
