KEY STAT: Hamburg have only scored two goals this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Only basement boys Ingolstadt have made a worse start to the season than Hamburg and Markus Gisdol’s men may receive little respite when Frankfurt come to town. The visitors have looked a solid unit this term and were unlucky not to topple Bayern Munich in their last outing which finished in a 2-2 draw.

RECOMMENDATION: Eintracht Frankfurt

KEY STAT: Betis have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Osasuna are starting to acclimatise to life in the top flight and can extend their unbeaten sequence to three with a victory over Betis at El Sadar. Sergio Leon's four goals in four games have given Osasuna a lift and the 27-year-old striker will look forward to facing Betis, who have shipped 18 goals in eight matches this season.

KEY STAT: Monaco are unbeaten in their last 20 meetings with Montpellier

EXPERT VERDICT: Monaco salvaged a point in their Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow on Tuesday to stay top of the pile and their quality could shine against fragile visitors Montpellier. Frederic Hantz’s outfit - winless from their five away Ligue 1 games this term - possess the worst defence in the division and their woes look set to continue at Stade Louis II.

RECOMMENDATION: Monaco

KEY STAT: Espanyol have scored only one goal in five matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Espanyol’s inability to find the net is costing them dear and they look uneasy favourites to see off Eibar at the Cornella-El Prat. The visitors have had no such problem in front of goal - netting in all their eight outings so far - and could at least match the point they gained at the Bernabeu earlier this month.

KEY STAT: Tottenham are unbeaten in nine domestic outings this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Bournemouth were taught a couple of harsh lessons by Tottenham last season but can give a better account of themselves here. The Cherries will be on a high after their 6-1 success over Hull and can earn a share of the spoils against a Spurs team suffering with a couple of influential injuries.

KEY STAT: Stoke are unbeaten in their last three outings

EXPERT VERDICT: Saturday’s 6-1 hammering at Bournemouth was Hull’s fifth defeat in six league outings. The free-falling Tigers have conceded 17 goals in their last four matches and could succumb at the KCOM Stadium to a Stoke side beginning to find their feet after a shaky start to the season.

Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who was making his third consecutive start, made 26 saves. Sabres goalie Robin Lehner stopped 18 shots.

Ducks 3, Flyers 2

Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read scored for the Flyers.

Penguins 3, Sharks 2

Patric Hornqvist scored the winner on a power play at 14:02 of the third. Evgeni Malkin and Scott Wilson also scored for the Penguins and Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau scored for the Sharks.
The Penguins were playing without captain and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sidney Crosby, who has a concussion, and top defenseman Kris Letang, who left a game Tuesday at Montreal because of an upper-body injury. Defensemen after Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot also left during the second because of unspecified injuries.

Bruins 2, Devils 1
BOSTON -- Patrice Bergeron made a triumphant return to the Boston lineup, scoring with 1:15 left to give his team a come-from-behind victory over New Jersey.
Bergeron, who missed the first three games of the season with a lower body injury, made his 2016-17 debut in his team's home opener -- and scored the winner off a pass from Brad Marchand, who scored the other goal for the Bruins.
Kyle Palmieri scored on the power play for the Devils' goal.

Alexei Emelin, Torrey Mitchell, Shea Weber, Alex Galchenyuk and Artturi Lehkonen each scored for the Canadiens, whohas scored at least three goals in each of their first four games. Jakob Chychrun and Laurent Dauphin scored for the Coyotes, who have allowed 12 goals in their last two games.
Montreal's Carey Price, making his first regular season start since Nov. 25, 2015, made 27 saves. Louis Domingue allowed four goals on 19 shots before he was lifted for Justin Peters. Peters stopped 23 shots in relief.

Wild 3, Maple Leafs 2
SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Eric Staal scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period as Minnesota stayed unbeaten at home, coming from behind for a win over Toronto.
Goalie Devan Dubnyk's 31 saves, combined with earlier goals by Zac Dalpe and Staal helped improve the Wild to 3-1-0, as they swept a three-game homestand.
The Maple Leafs got goals from Roman Polak and rookie Auston Matthews.

Kings 4, Stars 3 (OT)
DALLAS -- Alec Martinez scored the game-winner 1:20 into overtime, giving Los Angeles its first win of the season, against Dallas at American Airlines Center.
Jeff Carter and Tanner Pearson each had a goal and an assist for the Kings , who also got a goal from Nic Dowd. Petr Budaj stopped 17 of 20 shots.

McDavid then iced the game with an empty netter in the final minute. Tyler Pitlick, the Oilers second round choice in 2010, also scored.
Nail Yakupov, the former top-overall pick by the Oilers who was traded to the Blues prior to the season, scored for St. Louis.

Hurricanes 4, Flames 2
CALGARY, Alberta -- Carolina goaltender Eddie Lack made 26 saves for his fifth win in seven career starts against Calgary.
Teuvo Teravainen, Victor Rask, Viktor Stalberg and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes, who started the season with a six-game road trip.
Johnny Gaudreau, who signed a six-year $40.5 million contract the day before the season began, scored his first of the season for the Flames. Troy Brouwer also scored for Calgary.

NHL Odds and Expert Analysis: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews

That was about the newsiest first week of an NHL season that I can remember! Unfortunately, it was in the form of bad news for three teams.

But since I try to be a glass half-full type of guy, let's start with something that had the entire hockey world buzzing: the electric debut of 2016 No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews with the Toronto Maple Leafs. They basically tanked last season to improve their chances of winning the draft lottery and the right to take Matthews. And don't say the NHL's move to warm-weather locales in Florida, Arizona and California was a mistake because more kids in those areas are growing up playing hockey. Matthews, whose mother is from Mexico, was born in California and grew up in Scottsdale, Ariz., as he got interested in the sport watching the Coyotes play.

Back in June, Matthews became the Leafs' first overall pick since they took Wendel Clark in 1985. He was a good player, but a lot more is expected of Matthews -- basically, to finally return the Leafs to relevance and end the franchise's Stanley Cup drought (last Cup was in 1967).

The Leafs aren't going to win the Cup this year or probably even make the playoffs, but Matthews scored four goals in his debut on Wednesday against Ottawa. The fact Toronto lost 5-4 in overtime really was secondary. No player had ever scored four goals in his NHL debut. Just for comparison, neither Sidney Crosby nor Gordie Howe have four-goal NHL games to their credit. It took Alex Ovechkin 202 games to record his first four-goal game. Wayne Gretzky did it in 136. There was just one four-goal game in the NHL last season, by Calgary's Sam Bennett.

This is the NHL's best possible scenario: an American star in the hub of hockey, Toronto. Matthews was a heavy -150 favorite to win the Calder Trophy entering the season. I'm not saying that race is over, but ...

Now we get to the bad news of the first week: injury concerns for the Penguins' Crosby, the Sabres' Jack Eichel and Evander Kane, and Kings' Jonathan Quick.

Crosby appeared past all his injury woes, but is now dealing with another concussion. He might be back fairly soon and has been skating but this is the NHL's worst nightmare as Crosby missed significant time during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons while recovering from post-concussion symptoms. Crosby led Team Canada to an undefeated run at the World Cup of Hockey last month and was named tournament MVP. Pittsburgh is still the +450 favorite at Bovada to repeat as Eastern Conference champion.

Eichel, who had a terrific rookie season last year, is going to miss 6-8 weeks after suffering a high-ankle sprain. At least it wasn't some sort of tear or break but it's still devastating to a Sabres team I thought could sneak into the playoffs. Eichel had 24 goals and 32 assists last year. Kane suffered three cracked ribs on Thursday night when he crashed into the end boards against Montreal. He will be out "weeks." Kane is a knucklehead at times but mega-talented. He had 20 goals and 15 assists in 65 games with Buffalo last year.

The Kings put their star goaltender, Quick, on injured reserve with a groin injury suffered in Thursday's opener against the Sharks. Quick has backstopped the Kings to a pair of Stanley Cups and had played in 140 of their 162 regular-season games over the past two seasons. The two-time Vezina finalist is being called week-to-week for now. But if he decides on surgery, it could be a 3-4 month absence. The veteran duo of Jeff Zatkoff and Peter Budaj will be handling the assignment in Quick's spot. Budaj was called up from the AHL following Quick's injury. The Kings are +900 to win the Western Conference.

This Week's Games To Watch

NY Rangers at Washington, Saturday: An NHL Network game. These two rivals have quite a playoff history against one another this decade. They last met in the 2015 conference semifinals and Washington blew a 3-1 series lead and lost because that's something the Capitals tend to do. The Caps won the Metropolitan Division with an NHL-high 120 points last season and the Rangers were third with 101 and I think they will finish 1-2 this season, especially if Crosby's injury lingers. The Caps won three of five meetings in 2015-16 and four of the five were high-scoring. Bit of a surprise considering the quality of goalies in Braden Holtby, last year's Vezina winner, and Henrik Lundqvist. The Caps' star Ovechkin, the reigning NHL goal-scoring king, wasn't able to light the lamp in Washington' s first two games last week.

Preview: Coyotes (1-2) at Islanders (1-3)

Date: October 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders hope their second game this week against a struggling team playing the tail end of a back-to-back goes better than the first.

The Islanders continue a five-game homestand Friday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes at Barclays Center. While New York (1-3-0) is playing on two days' rest following a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, the Coyotes (1-2-0) will be playing a night after absorbing a 5-2 loss to the Canadiens in Montreal.

With the Islanders game in mind, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett pulled goalie Louis Domingue after he gave up four goals in the first two periods. Domingue, who is Arizona's No. 1 goalie in place of the injured Mike Smith, will start again on Friday.

"To change momentum for us and recognize we have to play tomorrow night again," Tippett said in explaining his decision. "We'll put Louie back in there tomorrow night and see if we get a better start from him."

The Coyotes, who will be playing the third game of a season-high, six-game road trip, have allowed 12 goals in losing their past two games and 15 goals in three games overall. Arizona is one of nine NHL teams to give up at least 15 goals thus far but the only one that has played fewer than four games.

"There's areas of our game that still have to (be cleaned) up," Tippett said. "Some of the execution is not what it needs to be. For us, we need all the parts to work for us to be real competitive."

The Coyotes will be the second consecutive reeling Pacific Division team to head into Barclays Center. The Islanders' loss to the Sharks came a night after San Jose absorbed a 7-4 loss to the New York Rangers.

New York looked like the flatter team Tuesday, when it had just four shots in the first period and six shots in the third period.

"It's a 60-minute game, there's a surge both ways, but at the end of the day, you've got to be consistent putting pucks on net," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Because when you put pucks on net, you're going to retrieve those pucks and you're going to get extended zone time."

The Islanders have scored just nine goals this season, the second fewest among teams that have played more than three games.

"We've played a lot of games here at the start, obviously, not the results we've wanted for the most part," Islanders center and captain John Tavares said. "We've just got to get off to a little better start on Friday."

Islanders No. 1 goalie Jaroslav Halak is likely to draw the start against Domingue. If they square off, it will be a rematch of the last time the Islanders faced the Coyotes on Dec. 19, when Domingue earned his first career shutout by stopping all 25 shots he faced in Arizona's 1-0 victory at Gila River Arena.

The shutout came in Domingue's only career appearance against the Islanders. Halak is 6-3-1 with a 1.91 goals against average in 10 career appearances against the Coyotes.

Preview: Predators (1-2) at Red Wings (2-2)

Date: October 21, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators are coming off wins, but neither team is particularly happy about the way it is playing.

Detroit hosts Nashville at Joe Louis Arena in a 7:30 game Friday.

The Red Wings (2-2-0) have won two in a row, but only defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night because of a spectacular performance in goal by backup goalie Jimmy Howard, who was making his first appearance of the season. Howard made 32 saves, including at least four breakaways.

"We can't play like this if we want to win," Detroit captain and left winger Henrik Zetterberg said after Wednesday night's game. "We're happy that we got the two points, but we've got a lot of work to do."

The Predators (1-2-0) lost 2-1, to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Nashville has scored seven goals this season and only two have come at even strength. Five have come on the power play.

"... I'm always pretty honest. First game I thought was good, and in second game I liked the way we played," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said about his team's even-strength play. "I didn't like the result and tonight I hated the way we played."

Predators goalie Pekka Rinne was also spectacular Tuesday against Dallas, making 35 saves.

"He was outstanding. It could've been all over in the first. He was outstanding," Laviolette said.

The Red Wings have also been careless with the puck.

"The more correctable thing is turnovers," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "We got to learn to be a team that plays north for 60 minutes, that gets pucks in behind, that attacks, doesn't turn the puck over in the D-zone, doesn't turn the puck over in the neutral zone. We've probably turned the puck over in the neutral zone more this year than last. We've probably got out of our zone a little bit better, but we've turned the puck over in the neutral zone, too."

Left winger Drew Miller's goal 59 seconds into the third period Wednesday broke a 1-1 tie for Detroit.

"Sometimes it's not pretty on the road, but I think the message after the game is we weren't good enough," Miller said. "We have a lot of things that we could have done better, not giving them as much speed. They're a team that plays really fast and they've got some guys that can fly, but we've got to be better in slowing them down."

Defenseman Mike Green and left winger Thomas Vanek lead the Red Wings in goals and points with three goals and six points each.

Green got his first career hat trick in Monday night's 5-1 win against the Ottawa Senators in the home opener at Joe Louis Arena. Vanek, who signed a one-year $2.6 million free agent contract with the Red Wings on July 1, got his third goal Wednesday night.

Grand Salami - October

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Blackhawks (2-2) at Blue Jackets (0-2)

Date: October 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Chicago Blackhawks are doing the blue-line shuffle to end the week, with lineup changes almost certain.

The winless Blue Jackets (0-2-0) hope to break that streak as they host the Blackhawks (2-2-0) on Friday night at Nationwide Arena, with defenseman Ryan Murray drawing back into the lineup. Chicago, looking to extend its winning streak after dropping the first two games of the season, will have defensemen Brian Campbell and Michal Rozsival taking a seat.

After six days without playing a game, the Blue Jackets are itching to drop the puck in search of that elusive first win.

"It's a big game for us," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said via the team website. "We've been sitting on 0-2 for a week here. It sucks. We need to have a good start and feel good about ourselves."

The team's best period the early season also happened to be the last one against the San Jose Sharks, establishing a stout forecheck and scoring twice before ultimately losing 3-2 at home.

Murray was reunited with Seth Jones on the top defensive-pairing in Thursday's practice, with rookie Zach Werenski dropping down to the second-pairing with David Savard. Rounding-out the final pair was Jack Johnson and Markus Nutivaara.

Tortorella had a simple answer when asked about the change.

"I didn't like how the pairs played in the last game," he said.

He's also cognizant of not overworking Werenski after just two NHL games. In the absence of Murray against the Sharks, the 19-year old logged significant ice time (22:53) with one goal and four shots over 27 shifts, while playing primarily with Jones.

"We have to be careful with (Werenski)," Tortorella said. "He's still a young man."

Over the last five seasons with the Florida Panthers, Brian Campbell never missed a regular-season game. It appears that he'll be sitting for Friday's game, joining Michal Rozsival, who hasn't played in any of the first four games. Campbell's offseason acquisition was heralded as what was missing on a defense that struggled last season.

Trevor van Riemsdyk had a poor game on opening night against the St. Louis Blues, recording 0-0-0, with zero shots and 4 PIM. He rode the pine for the next three games.

"We don't want the same two guys sitting out all the time," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said to the Chicago Sun-Times. "Sometimes you don't want to tinker with a winning lineup, and sometimes... you've got to get them in there to play. That's what we're visiting."

Van Riemsdyk played in all 82 games last season for the Blackhawks, but finds himself fighting for ice time on a blue-line crowded with eight defensemen.

Columbus announced Thursday that defenseman Cody Goloubef (oblique injury) was placed on waivers, so that he could be assigned to the team's AHL Cleveland Monsters, ostensibly to get him playing time coming off the injury. If he clears at noon on Friday, he'll report to Cleveland.

For Chicago, its injury situation is a touch longer than the Blue Jackets.

Marian Hossa, having scored his 500th goal in Tuesday's win over the Philadelphia Flyers, suffered a lower-body injury after blocking a shot in the latter stages of the game. He's considered day-to-day and is questionable for Friday's game in Columbus and Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Rookie forward Ryan Hartman, having missed the last two games with a lower-body injury, could return to the lineup Friday.

The two starting goalies for Friday's game are expected to be Sergei Bobrovsky for Columbus and Corey Crawford for Chicago.

Preview: Hamilton Tiger cats at Ottawa Redblacks

The Ottawa Redblacks can clinch their second East Division title in as many years when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the second game of a home-and-home set Friday. The Redblacks outlasted the Tiger-Cats 30-29 in Week 17 to stretch their lead to three points at the top of the division and can secure a bye into the Eastern Final by downing Hamilton for the fifth consecutive time overall.

"It's going to be a dog fight and we have to be ready," Ottawa quarterback Henry Burris told reporters. "We know our home faithful is going to come out for us and we're asking them to get loud again." The Tiger-Cats are clinging to second place after dropping their last three games. Hamilton holds a tenuous two-point lead over the struggling Toronto Argonauts in the battle for the last playoff spot in the CFL as only two East Division teams will qualify for the postseason with the Edmonton Eskimos crossing over from the West. Zach Collaros will miss his second consecutive game after being placed in the concussion protocol and the Tiger-Cats hope to clinch a playoff berth without their star quarterback by beating the Redblacks for the first time in nearly two years.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN3

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (6-9): Jeremiah Masoli threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, but had two interceptions against Ottawa to fall to 3-4 as a starter in 2016. Linebacker Keon Raymond, who was released by the Argonauts last month, registered seven tackles in his Hamilton debut. Right tackle Terrence Campbell missed most of the second half with an undisclosed injury and did not practice Monday while Andy Fantuz, who needs eight more receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the first time since 2010, was also absent, but could play Friday.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (7-7-1): Burris was named one of the CFL's Top Performers of the Week after completing 27-of-39 passes for 393 yards and a touchdown to go along with two rushing scores in his first start since Week 9. Punter Ray Early, who played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders last season, was added to the practice squad Monday and could be pushed into action after Ottawa averaged only 22.7 net yards per punt against Hamilton. Ernest Jackson stepped up in Chris Williams' absence, catching five passes for 106 yards and a touchdown.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Burris has accounted for nine total touchdowns in his last three games against Hamilton - including playoffs.

2. The Tiger-Cats are averaging a CFL-low 66.7 rushing yards per game.

3. The Redblacks dropped three of their last four home games.

PREDICTION: Redblacks 31, Tiger-Cats 29

Preview: Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders look to continue their march toward the best regular-season record in CFL history when they host the struggling Toronto Argonauts on Friday. The Stampeders already clinched their third West Division title in four years and a bye into the Western Final but still took care of business last week by cruising past the Montreal Alouettes 22-8 to extend their unbeaten streak to 15 games.

Calgary has won 13 consecutive games, including a 48-20 rout of the Argonauts on Oct. 10, and needs two more wins to make history as it aims for its 14th straight triumph against East Division opponents. Toronto has self destructed down the stretch, dropping its fifth consecutive game - a disappointing 29-11 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. The Argonauts are amazingly still in the hunt for a playoff spot in the East Division but face a formidable task in upending the Stampeders, who have won all eight of their home games this season and are 23-3 at McMahon Stadium since the start of 2014. "It's not much fun when we've lost eight of our last nine (games)," Toronto coach Scott Milanovich told reporters. "We're working so hard to try to get better and it's not coming out on the field."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN3

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (5-11): Drew Willy was limited to 11-of-23 passing for 87 yards and was pulled in the third quarter in favour of Dan LeFevour, who threw for 107 yards and a touchdown against Saskatchewan. Ricky Ray, who missed the last six games with a rib injury, returned to practice earlier in the week and could start Friday with Willy battling a shoulder problem. "Being out there this week and being able to throw with the guys I feel like I can play," Ray told reporters. "I feel like physically I don't have anything hindering me."

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (14-1-1): Linebacker Deron Mayo, who leads the team with 78 tackles, was carted off the field with a serious leg injury and could miss the rest of the season and the playoffs. Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 256 yards and a touchdown against Montreal to leapfrog Mike Reilly for the league lead in passing yards (5,127) and touchdowns (30). Dave Dickenson became the winningest rookie coach in CFL history after beating the Alouettes while Mitchell set a league record with his 13th straight victory to eclipse the old mark set by Ken Ploen, who won 12 in a row for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1961.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Calgary's 15-game unbeaten streak is second only to the Stampeders' 22-game run from 1948-49.

2. Toronto was outscored 115-42 over its last three games.

3. Calgary registered 13 sacks in its last two outings.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 18
By David Schwab

The Ottawa RedBlacks took a key step towards winning another East Division title with this past Friday’s tight 30-29 victory against second-place Hamilton as a 2 ½-point road underdog.

In Friday’s other CFL game, Winnipeg moved into second place in the West Division with a 35-32 win at British Columbia as a 5 ½-point underdog on the road.

Saturday’s action started with Saskatchewan extending its current winning streak to four games in a 29-11 romp against Toronto in a game that closed as a pick 'em.

Calgary kept its extended winning streak alive with a 22-8 victory at home against Montreal, but it could not cover the hefty 15 ½-point spread.

Friday, Oct. 21

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-9 SU, 5-10 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (7-7-1 SU, 6-9 ATS)
Point-spread: Ottawa -3
Total: 53 ½

Game Overview

Another loss to Ottawa this Friday would but a serious dent in the Tiger-Cats’ postseason plans, but they have been on a downward spiral since early September with just one straight-up win in their last five games while going a costly 0-5 against the spread. In last Friday’s loss, Jeremiah Masoli completed 25-of-32 attempts for 278 yards and three scores in place of an injured Zach Collaros, but he was also picked off twice.

Ottawa has not been all that much better in the second half of the season with just its third win in its last eight contests both SU and ATS. The one big positive in the RedBacks series opener of this home-and-home East Division clash was the play of veteran signal-caller Henry Burris. He completed 27-of-39 passing attempts for 393 yards and one touchdown throw. His top target in last week’s win was Ernest Jackson with five receptions for 106 yards and that lone score.

Betting Trends

With Ottawa winning the first of this home-and-home series it is now a perfect 4-0 both SU and ATS in the last four games between these two division rivals. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings between the two.

Toronto Argonauts (5-11 SU, 5-11) vs. Calgary Stampeders (14-1-1 SU, 12-4 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -18
Total: 52 ½

Game Overview

Sticking with the losing theme that has plagued the entire East Division over the past two months, last week’s loss to Saskatchewan was the Argonauts’ fifth loss in a row both SU and ATS as part of an extended 1-9 slide (SU and ATS) in their last 10 outings. This offense is now averaging just 22.1 points a game to go along with a defense that has given up an average of 31 points to its opponents.

The only thing that can stop the incredible roll that Calgary has been on since Week 5 of the season is the Stampeders themselves. They have long since locked up the top seed in the playoffs and with a bye in Week 20, it remains to be seen how they will approach their last two regular season games this week against Toronto and next week against Montreal as far as resting their starters. The 22 points against the Alouettes last week was Calgary’s lowest scoring output since mid-August.

Betting Trends

Calgary has won the last five meetings SU including a 48-20 victory on Oct. 10 as a 9 ½-point road favorite. It also has a slight 3-2 edge ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of those five games.

Oregon at California (Fri. ESPN, 10:30 p.m. ET)
The Ducks have had two weeks to make adjustments and get back on track after a four-game losing streak, something that is just unheard of in Eugene in recent years. The Ducks head into this game as the only Pac-12 team having failed to cover at least once, going 0-5-1 ATS in six games so far. Despite the struggles, Oregon is an impressive 22-6-1 ATS in their past 29 road games and they're 5-0 ATS in their past five meetings against Cal. The Golden Bears enter this game 9-20 ATS in their past 29 home games while going 1-4 ATS in their past five conference games while going 8-23 ATS in their past 31 following a straight up loss. The under has connected in seven of the past nine meetings in this series. The line is set at 87 1/2 as of Wednesday morning with Cal favored by a field goal.

Preview and Prediction: South Florida Bulls (6-1) at Temple Owls (4-3)
By Brett Nault
Friday, October 21, 2016 at 7:00 pm (Lincoln Financial Field)
The Line: Temple Owls +6.5 -- Over/Under:60
TV: ESPN HD

The South Florida Bulls will travel to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the Temple Owls this Friday in College Football action.

The South Florida Bulls won their 3rd straight game and improved to 6-1 (3-0 AAC) on the season after defeating the UConn Huskies, 42-27, this past Saturday. South Florida was down by a 17-14 margin early in the 3rd quarter but used an explosive 21-point 4th quarter to help secure the victory. South Florida outgained UConn by a 529-378 margin however, did lose the turnover battle by a 4-0 margin. Leading the way for the Bulls was QB Quinton Flowers who completed who had 5 TD’s and 370 total yards (213 passing; 157 rushing). On the season, South Florida is averaging 44.1 ppg on 506.4 total yards per game (238.0 passing, 268.4 rushing). Offensively, the Bulls have been led by QB Quinton Flowers who had completed 58.6% of his passes for 13 TD and 5 INT while averaging 219.3 passing yds/game. Flowers is also the 2nd leading rusher for the Bulls as he has 7 rushing TD’s while averaging 93.57 rushing yds/game. South Florida has an outstanding backfield as besides Flowers, the Bulls are led by Marlon Mack (14.0 att/g, 98.67 yds/g, 9 TD) and D’Ernest Johnson (8.0 att/g, 43.57 yds/g, 4 TD). Rodney Adams (4.6 rec/g, 65.6 yds/g, 4 TD), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (2.1 rec/g, 35.9 yds/g, 2 TD), and D’Ernest Johnson (2.4 rec/g, 23.9 yds/g, 4 TD) are the leading receivers for the Bulls. Defensively, South Florida is holding their opponents to an average of 25.9 ppg on 436.1 total yards per game (246.0 passing, 190.1 rushing). The Bulls have forced 13 turnovers on the season and have an overall turnover margin of +3.

The Temple Owls improved to 4-3 (2-1 AAC) on the season after defeating the UCF Knights, 26-25, this past Saturday. Temple had a sluggish start on the defensive end, however, was able to overcome a 25-14 halftime deficit to secure the win. Temple outgained UCF by a 364-296 margin however, lost the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for Temple was RB Jahad Thomas who had a TD and 120 rushing yds/g. On the season, Temple is averaging 32.0 ppg on 378.0 total yards per game (230.1 passing, 147.9 rushing). Offensively, the Owls have been led by the backfield duo of Jahad Thomas (17.0 att/g, 71.4 yds/g, 7 TD) and Ryquell Armstead (10.1 att/g, 57.8 yds/g, 7 TD). QB Phillip Walker has completed 56.2% of his passes for 10 TD and 10 INT while averaging 226.0 passing yds/game. Keith Kirkwood (3.3 rec/g, 47.7 yds/g, 3 TD), Jahad Thomas (3.6 rec/g, 50.2 yds/g, 3 TD), Ventell Bryant (3.8 rec/g, 57.8 yds/g, TD), and Brodrick Yancy (2.7 rec/g, 30.0 yds/g, 2 TD) are the leading receivers for the Owls. Defensively, Temple is holding their opponents to an average of 23.0 ppg on 316.6 total yards per game (166.7 passing, 149.9 rushing). Temple has forced their opponents into committing 14 turnovers on the season however, have just a +1 turnover margin on the season.

The Bulls are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games. The Owls are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games.

South Florida has one of the most explosive offenses in the country and come into this matchup with the 8th ranked scoring offense and 15th ranked total offense. Temple has a few playmakers on the offensive end in Jahad Thomas and Phillip Walker and although their defense lost a few key players from last year’s team, the Owls come into this matchup with the 38th ranked scoring defense. South Florida has one of the best offenses in the country which should be able to put up some points on the Owls and as I just don’t see Phillip Walker getting through this matchup without a few turnovers, I think the Bulls pull away in this one and cover this spread. Take South Florida to cover.

South Florida Bulls -6.5

Preview and Prediction: Oregon Ducks (2-4) at California Golden Bears (3-3)
By Randy Chambers
Friday, October 21, 2016 at 10:30 pm (California Memorial Stadium)
The Line: California Golden Bears -3 -- Over/Under: 87.5
TV: ESPN

The Oregon Ducks and Cal Golden Bears square off late Friday night in a Pac-12 college football game at Memorial Stadium on ESPN.

The Oregon Ducks are desperate for a victory in order to snap a brutal four-game losing streak. The Oregon Ducks haven’t lost five games since the 2006 college football season. Dakota Prukop is completing 66.2 percent of his passes for 1,173 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Prukop and Justin Herbert have combined for 10 touchdown passes this season. Darren Carrington II and Charles Nelson have combined for 636 receiving yards and three touchdowns while Dwayne Stanford has 13 receptions. The Oregon Ducks ground game is averaging 257.8 yards per contest, and Royce Freeman leads the way with 513 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, Oregon is allowing 41.8 points and 522.3 yards per game. Tyree Robinson leads the Oregon Ducks with 32 tackles, Troy Dye has three sacks and Brenden Schooler has two interceptions.

The Cal Golden Bears look for a strong home victory to get a game above a .500 record. The Cal Golden Bears have won four straight home games. Davis Webb is completing 60.8 percent of his passes for 2,256 yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Webb has four or more touchdown passes in five of the six games this season. Chad Hansen and Demetris Robertson have combined for 1,108 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns while Melquise Stovall has 24 receptions. The Cal Golden Bears ground game is averaging 152.3 yards per contest, and Khalfani Muhammad leads the way with 377 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, California is allowing 40 points and 494.7 yards per game. Raymond Davison leads the Cal Golden Bears with 52 tackles, Cameron Saffle has 2.5 sacks and Evan Rambo has one interception.

The Ducks are 22-6-1 ATS in their last 29 road games and 0-7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Golden Bears are 9-20 ATS in their last 29 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games. The Ducks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the home team is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 meetings.

These are two of the worst defensive teams in college football, so a battle between Oregon and Cal may come down to which team has the ball last. However, the Cal Golden Bears have been more consistent offensively than the Oregon Ducks. Oregon simply isn't a good football team right now and likely has little confidence after getting waxed by Washington. Even in its losses, Cal has competed.

Cal is better than Oregon, so give me the home team and the small line.

Preview and Prediction: San Jose State Spartans (2-5) at San Diego State Aztecs (5-1)
By Randy Chambers
Friday, October 21, 2016 at 10:30 pm (Qualcomm Stadium)
The Line: San Diego State Aztecs -23.5 -- Over/Under: 48
TV: ESPN2

The San Jose State Spartans and San Diego State Aztecs meet Friday night in a college football matchup at Qualcomm Stadium on ESPN2.

The San Jose State Spartans look for their first road win and back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The San Jose State Spartans have three road wins since the 2014 season. Kenny Potter is completing 58.5 percent of his passes for 1,148 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. Potter has four touchdown passes in his last three games. Tre Hartley and Justin Holmes have combined for 787 receiving yards and four touchdowns while Tim Crawley has 22 receptions. The San Jose State Spartans ground game is averaging 160.7 yards per contest, and Malik Roberson leads the way with 329 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, San Jose State is allowing 35.7 points and 444 yards per game. Maurice McKnight leads the San Jose State Spartans with 53 tackles, Isaiah Irving has three sacks and Andre Chachere has three interceptions.

The San Diego State Aztecs look to remain undefeated at home and build on their MWC lead. The San Diego State Aztecs have lost just one home game since the 2014 season. Christian Chapman is completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 984 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Chapman has two touchdown passes in his last three games. Mikah Holder and Eric Judge have combined for 507 receiving yards and three touchdowns while Donnel Pumphrey has 18 receptions. The San Diego State Aztecs ground game is averaging 246 yards per contest, and Pumphrey leads the way with 1,111 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, San Diego State is allowing 20 points and 297.2 yards per game. Calvin Munson leads the San Diego State Aztecs with 58 tackles, Alex Barrett has six sacks and Damontae Kazee has three interceptions.

The Spartans are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games in October and 2-10 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Aztecs are 23-9-2 ATS in their last 34 conference games and 8-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record. The Spartans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in San Diego State and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 meetings overall.

San Jose State showed signs of improvement with a victory over Nevada last week, but the Spartans still aren't a good football team. San Jose State has had it rough on the road this season and has been outscored by San Diego State in the last two matchups by a combined scor of 68-14. The San Diego State Aztecs are the cream of the crop in the MWC and have been great at covering the number while piling up outright victories.

So, while the spread is a bit high, the San Diego State Aztecs should be able to get the job done at home.

RANDY'S PICK
San Diego State Aztecs -23.5
