PHILADELPHIA –1½ +1.25 over NY Islanders
From both a talent and scheduling standpoint this one is unfair. The Flyers are well-rested and ready to go after being off since Saturday. The Islanders will play its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs after being outplayed in Toronto last night and losing 4-2. Actually, it’s a rare to see the Islanders outplay anyone these days, as they’ve dropped five of six and have allowed four goals or more in all five losses. In fact, they allowed five or more in every loss with the exceptions of last night. The Flyers can score with the best of them and although their defense is a bit banged up, they’ve still gone 9-1-3 over its last 13 games. Furthermore, the Islanders are much more banged up with a slew of key players on the rack (Radek Martinek, Kyle Okposo, Frans Nielsen and Mike Comrie). The Flyers really have no excuses here for not making this an easy win. Philly catches an Islander team that’s going bad and running on fumes and worst case here, and I doubt it’ll come to that, is a shot at an empty net to get the cover. Play: Philadelphia –1½ +1.25 (Risking 2 units).

Calgary +1.18 over MONTREAL
It’s hard to believe that the Habs are 15-6-5, but in reality they’re 15-11. (Hey, here’s an idea for the NHL since they want to attract more fans; how about making the standings W/L only instead of making it look like an algebra problem). I don’t think even the players know how to read the standings. Anyway, Montreal is definitely playing better after a three-week funk in November. They picked up a couple of nice wins over Detroit and the Rangers but the fact is, they’ve still only gone 5-5 over its last 10 and scoring goals is becoming more and more difficult all the time for them. Montreal is coming off a 2-1 OT loss to the Devils in which the power play went 0-for-5 and is now 5-for-60 over the last 14 games. Alex Kovalev hasn’t scored in 16 games. The Flames can play any way they want. They can play a tight defensive game and win 2-1 or they can win a wide-open, high scoring game. They have as much talent as anyone, they’ve won five of six and you’d have to believe that they’d be a little extra amped up tonight, as they have not played in Montreal for over two years. Play: Montreal +1.18 (Risking 2 units).

Vancouver +1.05 over NASHVILLE
I’m always interested in the Canucks as a pooch because this team plays to win every night and I’m suggesting that if you play them every time they’re a dog, you’re going come out ahead by the year’s end. This is a live hockey team that plays its heart out just about every single shift. The Canucks have picked up three of a possible four points over its last two, winning in Minnesota and losing in OT to Colorado. Now they’ll catch the Preds returning home after a 6-3 loss to St. Louis last night. The game was tied 3-3 going to the third and the Preds looked completely gassed in that fatal period. One must wonder how much they’ll have in the tank tonight, as they will play its fourth game in a week, third game in four nights and the tail end of back-to-backs. Play: Vancouver +1.05 (Risking 2 units).

Los Angeles +1.40 over COLORADO (REG)
Great chance of catching the inconsistent Av’s a little flat tonight after a string of very tough games. They’ve been involved in six straight one-goal games, which in itself takes its toll, and it’s their second game back from a three game trip after they returned home to play the Canucks in a game in which they scored a late goal to tie it and then went on to win in a shootout. Because the Av’s are 5-1 in shootouts and the Kings are 2-7 in extra time, I’m playing this one in regulation only. The Kings are coming off a nice win over the Jackets, 3-0. They’re now a .500 hockey team, the same as the Av’s and they’re as healthy and rested as they’ve been all year. Definite overlay. Play: Los Angeles +1.40 (Risking 2 units). <o></o>
