BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The LSU-Florida football game scheduled for Saturday in Gainesville has been postponed due to Hurricane Matthew, it was announced Thursday. The universities and the SEC Office will work to reschedule the game later in the 2016 season if possible.

"We had a very productive phone call today with a great spirit of cooperation between the universities' presidents and athletics directors and it became clear that the University of Florida could neither host nor travel to a game this weekend considering the circumstances," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. "The developments of the hurricane in the last 24 hours, the projected magnitude of its impact and the unknown aftermath of this storm have resulted in this decision to seek another date to play the LSU-Florida game. We have to be sensitive to the possible imminent disruption to the state of Florida and in particular the Gainesville and surrounding area."

At this time the schools do not have a common open date on which to reschedule the game, so the schools and SEC Office will make every effort to find a scheduling solution with the possible movement of other games on the schools' schedules.

Before deciding to postpone the game, the schools and SEC explored other date and location options, and LSU offered to either travel or host the game over the course of the weekend. Ultimately it was determined that the likelihood of damage from the storm, lack of available emergency personnel and the uncertainty of the impact of the storm on people, facilities and travel necessitated a postponement.

"The timing of this storm on a Friday and the uncertainly of its aftermath in the ensuing days make it particularly difficult to project the conditions for the remainder of the weekend as well as the opportunity for travel of teams and fans to or from Gainesville and other cities in Florida," Sankey said. "I am appreciative of the cooperation of our universities on this matter."

They really had no choice. I live in Hollywood and was going to drive up if it was still safe but it is a tremendous burden on resources that are needed for public safety to play a football game in an area where a storm is hitting.

I agree... I have friends in Gainesville that said they are expecting 40-50 mph winds

No choice but to play it later in the weekend or go to BR or play at a neutral site...they had options but the word I'm hearing (and it was stated publically) that UF was only going play in Gainesville. SEC office should be embarrassed they let UF AD Foley call the shots...they knew the storm was more than likely going to hit that area Fri nite/Sat but chose to keep "waiting and see" inside of opting to for an alternative.

Yeah, making UF travel to Baton Rouge when there's a storm about to roll through the state....just to play a football game. These kids have family that live directly in the storms path. The right decision was made.....

From another board:

In 2005 with Hurricane Rita approaching Louisiana, LSU faced a similar decision with their upcoming home matchup against Tennessee. On the Thursday leading up to the game, UT coach Phil Fulmer expressed his concerns that he did not think it would be wise for the Vols to fly down for the game.

Said Fulmer in the USA Today article, "We've bent over backward to do everything we can to make this happen including going down the day of the game. Obviously, if they're sending people out of Louisiana, I don't know why we would be going in. My (university) president will not allow that to happen."

Did LSU offer to cancel the game? Play it in Knoxville instead? Hell no! LSU lobbied for the game to be moved from Saturday night to Sunday. Tennessee even threatened to forfeit the game. Ultimately, SEC commissioner Mike Slive rescheduled the game for that Monday night and the game was played.

Said LSU athletic director Skip Bertman, "So we got our night game, but not on Saturday night. Our preference was to play on Sunday night if not Saturday. We weren't going to move this game (to another location)."

"We weren't going to move this game to another location"

you left out one part. The part where LSU had already moved one home game that season. The Arizona State game was relocated to Arizona State the week before Tennessee and Fat Phil came to town

LSU didn't want to lose 2 home games. Apples to oranges

With a category 4 hurricane coming Friday night, they canceled the game. Probably a smart move. The UF D line was "not out" as Brantley and Cox were going to play.

"corndog fan"?? Fuck you mother fucker.

Seriously, UF stalled so damn long that they were only left with the decision to cancel the game. The UF administration should be red-assed embarrassed for the way they mismanaged this. On Monday they knew the hurricane was coming and where the track was going to take it. They knew what sort of burden it would be on the state and its residents, so they should have made relocation plans THEN....not delay four days. Now, if you want to be an honest Gator fan and say "hey, we don't feel like accommodating anyone but ourselves and we would rather cancel the game than relocate".....I can understand that. But please don't try to sell some insulting excuse like "it was difficult to project the conditions for the remainder of the weekend" bullshit.

Now, the only solution is for LSU to lose the revenue of a home game on November 19th, in order to accommodate UF's piss poor handling of a known situation. And, if that is the resolution it would require LSU to play four games in 19 days against Bama, Arkansas, A&M and UF. That is a bunch of bullshit that any fan of any school would disagree with.
