Fish oil is a rich source of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), omega-3 fatty acids.

Fish oils seems to protect against heart attack, stroke, cancer and inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. It is involved in protection against disease in several ways. The most important include "thinning" the blood and preventing blood clots, and being converted into less inflammatory prostaglandins and reducing inflammation.

Oily fleshed, cold water fish like salmon and sardines are the best sources of fish oil, although fish oil capsules are available and may be used if higher amounts are needed for specific conditions. If you use fish oil capsules, choose a product that is free from heavy metals and toxins that may also contaminate fish.

Remember, the EPA amount is for aiding heart and circulation and improve your immune system.

The DHA amount is for a healthy mood, mind, and memory.

As stated above, find a brand that is free of toxins(such as the poison mercury).

The average American only has a 1:1 ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6.

Medical and health experts suggest that it should be at least a 10:1 ratio and probably 20:1.

I just mix the flaxseed oil into my protein shakes, you would never even know it was there.
They also sell the fish oils and/or flax seed oils in pill form.

One fish oil pill company's label says "New improved formula. No fish burps!" LOL.

Most of the bottles I've seen will say they have no mercury in them. As to whether you can believe them, who knows?

Are there varying qualities of fish oils?

Fish Oil

Tried the fish oil for about three months and one day at the gym, heard lady next to me say she kept smelling fish. Of coarse i was on the stair stepper next to her and sweating like a pig. Asked one of the trainers who is a guru on all things there and he said that was one of the side effects. With some people it was worse than others. Stopped then. However am thinking about the flaxseed oil as my fingers crack during the winter and it is hell on my golf game. Talked to someone with the same problem and they said they solved the problem

This is from a previous thread on this subject.

In the US there is a governing body called the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) that determines whether things are pharmaceutical grade. I have included an explanation at the bottom of this post.

Here is the stuff I use. It's sold at a discount at Costco.

http://www.shop.com/op/~Kirkland_Sig...0?sourceid=298

"USP has tested and verified ingredients, potency and manufacturing process. USP sets official standards for dietary supplements."

----

Pharmaceutical Grade: What does it mean?
There are basically three different grades of raw materials used in products they are:

  • Pharmaceutical Grade - meets pharmaceutical standards
  • Food Grade - meets standards set for human consumption
  • Feed Grade - meets standards set for animal consumption
The difference between each grade type is one of quality and purity. In technical terms, no substance is 100% pure, for there are always other substances added to various products. The difference between the grades is one of how much of these other substances are present in the product.
There are several criteria by which pharmaceutical grade are judged. The product must be in excess of 99% purity with no binders, fillers, excipients, dyes, or unknown substances.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)
The USP provides assurance to the consumer, as well as those involved in manufacturing and processing, that the quality and purity of the raw materials utilized are of pharmaceutical grade. Consequently, the USP guarantees a certain standard of excellence sold only through physicians and selected pharmacies. The bottom line is, if the product is not manufactured properly it may not work or could cause
side effects. If you're not sure what you are buying, ask for the facts.

Buy only.....

Pharmaceutical Grade - meets pharmaceutical standards

Also, a good way to test your OIL is cut it in half and place in FREEZER.

If it doesn't become hard, you have a very good quality fish oil.
