did you watch 60 minutes last night? quite an indictment on the state of florida. made me think twice about ever moving there...i had considered it for a while.

some very popular writer/columnist from florida goes around the state giving talks on how messed up things are. basically saying "why do all these child rape/murders happen here?"..."why did 70% of the 9/11 terrorists get their flight training here?"...etc.

he claims that florida is a haven for the dregs of society that screw up elsewhere and come to florida to start over. also, due to the liberal bankruptcy laws, the scum like o.j. simpson come to live in florida so when they lose a civil trail...they do not lose their primary residence.

he said "if you could pick up the united states like you pick up a mat under your car after an oil change, all the sludge would run down the mat and end up at the southern most tip...which is florida".

very stinging indictment. and, from a resident and very popular individual.

my parents live in tampa and i visit during thanksgiving every year. my sister in law's family has property in naples and marco island and we go down there every chance we get. i really like it too but...i dont think i would ever live there.

one thing i noticed as i have made the drive from tampa to naples many times is...when you get off the highway to get gas or food or something...its like you're in a different world. beyond hick-dom. very different from rural illinois or indiana. cant really describe it but...its not the same.

This is much more apparrent NORTH of Tampa rather than SOUTH of Tampa.

Either way, it doesnt bother me.

Maybe because I was born and raised a hick from the sticks of Iowa.

Too funny! Guess where I live Blue? You betcha in Fort Myers, right between Naples and Tampa. The one thing I will say about I75 is that it really does not run through the "cities" most everything on the west coast of Florida is closer to the coast and I75 is more in land. I am happy here right now, but when I settle down and have childrem, I will move out of this state before they start school. The school system in Florida is terrible. Or atleast in the parts I know of (Tampa, Miami included) I heard that Orlando has some decent schools and some of the more affluent areas on the other coast. Everyone thinks of Naples as being a great place to live, but I would have to classify them as also being below average when it comes to school systems.

Crime? I think there is crime everywhere and it is no better or no worse here in Florida. Why all the child abductions? I have no idea, but I dont think that being in Florida has anything to do with it.

same could be said about describing Las Vegas. Definitely a place where the grifters, con artists, and scammers congregate.

Would never live anywhere else. Maybe it's just because it's still just plain cheap to live here. I got twice the house for 70K less when I moved here. I'll never move back to Chicago.

No doubt things haven't pretty as of late down here, but, I think our stories stand out more so down here in Florida because it is unexpected for this area to have such terrible things happen. I mean, all of these bad things happen on a daily basis in New York or Chicago, but it's not really a big deal to everyone because bad things are normal there almost to the point you expect it.................
