I was wondering if anyone has stats on which teams have a tendency to go over/under for each half. For example, Utah games seems to go under in the first half a lot(I read 16 straight until last night) and over in the second half. Any other teams that have such a tendency? Thanks.

I have 1st and 2nd half stats for all teams. I'll try to post something later tonight or tomorrow when I have more time. In the meantime, if there's a particular team you're wondering about, let me know.

(Edit: Well, upon posting this, I see that the formatting is kinda bad. Multiple spaces and/or tabs are collapsed into one space character. Dots instead of spaces help a bit. Jack of Hearts, you have a nice format for the Skybook contest. What is the trick to nicely formatting a post here? Or at the least, how do I disable the software from collapsing space characters?)

Here's what I have for 1st and 2nd halves this season. Hope it formats ok.

It's pretty clear why oddsmakers have adjusted for Utah's totals. New Jersey and Washington's totals are similar to Utah's.

In Utah's case, they foul until the bitter end college-style. Not sure why they can't score in the 1st half though.

In Washington's case, from what I've observed, when they are getting blown out, the young guys (in particular Dixon and Blake) come in and really pick up the tempo.

Not sure what the story is with New Jersey. However, their 1st half total break down is 5-4-1 since Frank took over. It was 14-28-0 under Scott. So, their overall 19-32-1 may be misleading now.

I didn't take a close look at sides, but Orlando's pitiful 13-40-3 record in the 2nd half ATS seems to reflect McGrady's recent comments about the team quitting in the 2nd half.

Hope this is helpful.

Wow...Thanks for all the detailed stats, picasso. I didnt know that Washington and NJ have a similar tendency to Utah when it comes to first half unders and second half overs. I did notice that the first half totals for Washington games have been low too, but not as noticable as Utah games.

Picasso, I would think you could take a screen shot of your nicely formatted spread sheet, save it, then post it at a hosting site, then post the URL of the image here us9ing the image display tab here.

If your not sure how to take a screen capture and save it let me know..

Picasso, that above post was suppose to be from me, wife's name was still signed on, no biggy...

Thanks alot for those numbers, very helpfull

DID you spot those 2 2nd half overs last night?

Totall for the Utah/Orlando game was 189/190. They scored 63 in the 1st half and the 2nd half line was 95. I jumnped on it fast, it went to 96/96.5 inside of 1 minute of opening at that number, so I was not the only one who spotted it.

Almost the same scenario happened with the Port/Clippers game and it just hit at the end.

The output is just a text file. The data is in a MySQL database and I have some home-grown Perl scripts which generate various reports. It's all Linux-based, so no Windows applications are involved. At some point, I plan to add a web-based front-end for my stuff, but for now it's just text files.

Utah, NJ, and Washington 2nd half totals regularly jump quickly, so I'm always prepared. Mostly, I've just been playing middles/scalps on these with the aid of some reduced vig shops and about 8-10 books in all. When certain teams are involved, I typically grab the over early and come back with the under later. Last night, for example, I wound up with over 95 -110 and under 96 +110 on the Utah 2nd half which gave me a freeroll on 2 numbers. It didn't hit, but I have hit a number of these over the course of the season. Other times, it winds up being a 2 to 2.5 point middle with reduced vig on one or both sides. In the Por/LAC game you mentioned, I had a freeroll on 97 with over 97 -105/under 97.5 +105 (concurrent in this case) and missed by 1. Did hit one side on the LAL/GS second half total. There are opportunities every night, but it's tedious work, you have to be quick, sometimes speculative, and have a bunch of outs.

Picasso....

Can you please post updated results for each team's O/U record in each half if you have them? Lakers/Nets game today has a very low(94) first half number given the game total(192). I think NJ has been going under in the first half and over in the second lately. Would like confirmation, though. Thanks

Picasso, thanks a lot. Do you have any idea why the 1st half O/U(97.5 vs game total of 192.5) in Washington/New Orleans today is a bit high even though Washington goes under a lot in the 1st half? I know the 2nd half line will be higher than what it should be, but what explains the high line in the 1st half?

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Based on picasso's data, I've broken down which teams tend to go over/under in each half.

1st half 'over' teams(at least 33% more overs than unders):
Bos
Dal
LAC
Orl

1st half 'under' teams(at least 33% more unders than overs):
Hou
NJ
SA
Tor
Utah
Min

2nd half 'over' teams(at least 33% more overs than unders):
Utah
Wash

2nd half 'under' teams(at least 33% more unders than overs):
Det
GS
Ind
LAL
Sea
Port

No idea what was behind the posted numbers, but it sure did play out that way. The 1st half final was 98 with the regulation final being 192 thanks to a low-scoring 4th quarter.

On second thought, I see that New Orleans is somewhat of a 1st half over team. As for the Wiz, with Stackhouse and Hughes out, perhaps the younger guys (particularly Blake and Hayes in this case since Dixon has already been starting for Hughes) playing earlier (and more) in the game is a factor behind the total. Still, this doesn't really explain the effective 2nd half number being lower. So, not really sure...just thinking out loud...

picasso, looking at the data you provided, I'm quite surprised that there are only 2 teams that tend go over the second half totals at a significant level(Utah and Washington). Most other teams tend to go under in the second half.

Could be coaching style, could be thsoe teams (Utah and Was) start cold and end trying to catch up..seems logical.

Awesome thread BTW..
