Young woman returned from visiting Mexico 3 days ago, and has been confirmed to having the Swine Flu Virus. Costa Rica becomes first country if central america to report a case.:ohno:

Protect yourself by washing your hands frequently. I believe they are also recommending you get a flu shot. We may even need to consider wearing a mask if this thing spreads, especially considering we generally work within enclosed offices with little fresh air circulation.

You are such an idiot.

1918 H1N1 Spanish Flu had a mortality rate of 2.5%, and it still killed an estimated 50 million people in ~24 months. You could get symptoms and die in the same day.

Currently reported mortality rate of 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu in Mexico is 7%.

Granted we have better antivirals... but are there enough, how many people won't seek treatment fast enough, and how many flu-like symptom patients will it take to overwhelm the public hospitals (which offer extremely fast and efficient service already, lol).

I totally ignored SARS, and wouldn't give a fuck either, but faith in modern medicine (esp. in Costa Rica) versus a pandemic virus is stupid. Antivirals won't save you if the pharmacy already ran out. (Speaking of which, I wouldn't mind buying some Tamiflu and Relenza right now).

Hopefully this will turn out less severe than the 1918 strain, and the deaths in Mexico are mostly due to lack of prompt medical attention... however reported medical staff deaths doesn't bode well.

Unlike common influenza (and like the 1918 pandemic) this variant attacks people with strong immune systems the worst (esp. adults 25-45 years old); as it's your immune system's reaction that kills you.

<quote> I'm a specialist doctor in respiratory diseases and intensive care at the Mexican National Institute of Health. There is a severe emergency over the swine flu here. More and more patients are being admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite the heroic efforts of all staff (doctors, nurses, specialists, etc) patients continue to inevitably die. The truth is that anti-viral treatments and vaccines are not expected to have any effect, even at high doses. It is a great fear among the staff. The infection risk is very high among the doctors and health staff.

There is a sense of chaos in the other hospitals and we do not know what to do. Staff are starting to leave and many are opting to retire or apply for holidays. The truth is that mortality is even higher than what is being reported by the authorities, at least in the hospital where I work it. It is killing three to four patients daily, and it has been going on for more than three weeks. It is a shame and there is great fear here. Increasingly younger patients aged 20 to 30 years are dying before our helpless eyes and there is great sadness among health professionals here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_storm

A cytokine storm is a potentially fatal immune reaction consisting of a positive feedback loop between cytokines and immune cells, with highly elevated levels of various cytokines.[1]

It is believed that cytokine storms were responsible for many of the deaths during the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed a disproportionate number of young adults.[1] In this case, a healthy immune system may have been a liability rather than an asset.

Recent reports of high mortality among healthy young adults in the 2009 swine flu outbreak point to cytokine storms as being responsible for these deaths.

http://www.cytokinestorm.com/

In the absence of prompt medical intervention to stop the "cytokine storm", the lung will suffer permanent damage. Many of these patients will develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), i.e. will present with pulmonary edema that is not caused by volume overload, or a depressed left ventricular function. Deaths will usually result from multisystem organ failure, and not from lung failure.

Advice: Buy hand sanitizers and have family and friends clean their hands often. I feel sorry for all those people that commute in those jam-packed buses here in San Jose everyday. That is a dangerous propagation point.

Those with flu symptoms will be destroyed

Hilarious error (or unintentional slip?):

Anyone exhibiting symptoms is being referred to an
isolation room where they can be evaluated by a public health
official before proceeding to their destruction.

Source: http://www.dhs.gov/ynews/releases/pr_1241056994692.shtm
They've since changed it to "proceeding to their destination".

*corrected typo; changed destruction to destination

The Swine Flu Hoax

You are such an idiot.

(Speaking of which, I wouldn't mind buying some Tamiflu and Relenza right now).

Tamiflu is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza. It will be the prime medication sold to protect citizens from swine flu as it was for avian flu. All healthcare workers, military and essential service workers will need a dose available and it will be bought with your tax dollars.Tamiflu is made and patented by Gilead Sciences and Donald Rumsfeld was the chairman of this company before he joined the Bush administration. When the Avian Flu scare flashed across the television sets of Americans, Gilead Sciences stock went through the roof. Rumsfeld refused to sell his stock when he joined the Bush administration and the increase in stock value made him the richest man in the Bush administration. Moreover, Gilead Sciences successfully lobbied a billion dollar contract with the U.S. military during the avian flu scare, giving each soldier access to the drug. Now, with the swine flu scare, the same players are about to make an even bigger fortune. Who are these people? They are all hardcore neoconservatives with a long history of paying for neocon agendas and campaigns and they have far-reaching capabilities to manufacture a media-constructed, influenza hoax. The actual flu may be real, but the panic surrounding it is the product of those who waited for another opportunity to knock, or sneeze.
The largest shareholder of Gilead Sciences is the FMR Corporation. This company is owned by Grover Glenn Norquist, a well-connected Republican activist with close ties to business and the media. Norquist was the Executive Director of the College Republican National Committee in the 1980's and he oversaw the transformation of the committee into a conservative grassroots powerhouse for the Reagan administration. His credentials and resume include being a:
- Lobbyist for Microsoft
- Member, board of directors, National Rifle Association
- Member, board of directors, American Conservative Union
- Member, Council on Foreign Relations (2001)
- Consultant for Janus-Merritt Strategies, a lobbying firm

Donald Rumsfeld, as previously mentioned, holds major shares in the company. His ties to the Bush administration are self-evident. Another major shareholder in Gilead Sciences is Goldman Sachs. I won’t bother listing their connections to the Bush administration. There are too many to list.
As we sit on the eve of a new influenza scare, the question is: will anybody pay attention to the fact that the last influenza scare didn’t become a pandemic, but it sure made neoconservatives rich. The regular run-of-the-mill strains of influenza kill more than 35 000 Americans every year and hospitalize another 200 000. Eighty people dying of disease in one of the dirtiest cities on earth is tragic, but it should not be used as an excuse to fill the coffers of a conservative faction that has already ripped off America of every penny it could during its time in office. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bush even stole the cutlery out of the White House before he left. The only hands that need washing are America's; washed of the filthy agenda of neoconservatives willing to exploit anything to make a buck.

1997 H5N1 Avian flu had no human-to-human transmission. All cases were traced back to bird-to-human transmission.

Phase 3 -
An animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus has caused sporadic cases or small clusters of disease in people, but has not resulted in human-to-human transmission sufficient to sustain community-level outbreaks.

2009 H1N1 Swine flu has sustained human-to-human transmission in multiple countries sufficient to cause community-level outbreaks.

Phase 5 - Human to human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus able to sustain community-level outbreaks has been verified in two or more countries in one WHO region.

And to illustrate the difference, to get H5N1 Avian flu, you had to come in direct contact with an infected bird, and it was still hard to contract.

To get 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu, you had only to visit a city of of over 22 million in population with only ~2200 suspected cases (0.01% of the population).

Or at least that's the case with a few hundred tourists returning from Mexico City the past weekend.

Tell me, do you subscribe to conspiracy theories of the New World Order, and believe the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control are part of a massive global conspiracy?

Lets just wait till May 6th when the Mexican government and rest of the world says everything is o.k. we "controlled" the outbreak.

I don't believe everything is a conspiracy, but I don't believe everything on face value either.

Let me turn that question on you:

Tell me, do you subscribe to the mass media and political institutions, swallowing everything they give you whole? And believe the Iraq war was nothing more than liberation of an oppressed people?

I mean, the media telling you the world is coming to an end, be afraid, the end is coming. They have been spewing the same retoric, with ever new 'reasons'. You really think there isn't an agenda to this?

I have no idea what the media is telling anyone, I don't watch television, I don't read any newspapers, and the handful of Internet sites I've read are considered reliable sources.

I didn't hear about the flu in the media, and I still haven't. We were traveling by air last weekend and found people wearing masks, and my wife now has flu-like symptoms.

If you are tired of media hype, why don't you just turn off the fucking TV and radio, and use the newspaper to start a fire in your chimney. I have been blissfully ignorant of the media for the last decade. It's nice.
