This computer came preinstalled (HP n 1540) I think is the model, with a preinstalled firewall. All you had to do was enable it. (Windows XP)
Knock on wood--no problems to speak of like I had with my earlier computer.

What % of problems do these so called "firewalls" prevent?

There's no "simple" way to really explain it. They prevent a lot of stuff-especially if you are on a DSL or cable, but they won't prevent a lot of stuff from "bad" web sites & stuff that you download.

I would certainly also have a virus scanner-but anymore, even that doesn't completely make you safe.

Thinks TT--I agree. We are all in the "infancy stage" of the net. It's just toughter on us older seniors. Hey I'm packing up my puter for a few days (hopefuly that's all) to move to within state to a "better place". Cost abit more but you get what you pay for.
One never knows how it will work out until actually being there. At least there is On-site management which i think is a plus now-a days. But it's all a what I call a "roulette wheel". Some lose some win. But the larger the numbers the better your odds... ha.

I think the computer world would do well to structure a plan or or whatever to those without the background or maybe even ANY knowledge of the procedings. But time marches on.
BOL to you and yours!

software firewalls (zonealarm, windows firewall, etc..) are absolutely worthless and are easy to hack... the home routers are worthless as well, they act as a firewall but do very little in prevention... especially the linksys and dlinks

watchguard, sonicwall, fortigate... they make great routers with builtin firewalls for a SOHO
