violation of privacy. at least the wiretaps were done in the name of fighting terrorism and not to promote political ideas.

It's not a violation of privacy, but it's a very rude intrusion into the cyber lives of anyone who has not personally requested such mails.

IOW - It's SPAM

Funny...you didn't think the Bush NSA taps were telemarketers. :think2:

Federal wiretapping without reasonable cause is an established criminal act.

And yeah I know that BushCo feels they got the needed short term waivers on those laws.

Sending someone unsolicited email is not a crime and for good reason.

Thus my earlier post that while it's not a criminal act, it's most certainly very rude.

And that rudeness is most likely to be noticed by the very demographic where President Obama is strongest - younger, more tech using and tech savvy Americans.

All in all, not a real good tactic and so I hope that it's dumped as a strategy ASAP.

I'm not sure if you guys have it in the states but the politicians were doing those recorded phone calls. The ones where you would pick up the phone and a recorded political message was on the other side.

IMO it's the same thing. Annoying but whatever

Asking for people to "narc" on people who don't agree with your politics...by sending their information to a White House email account is more than just bad form.

Quit pretending this is just some silly spam.

Yeah...it's equally rude and for the most part unavoidable as long as they comply with federal and state laws pertaining to telemarketing/surveying etc

Just one of many reasons why I have not answered my phone for at least a decade without knowing the identity of the caller.

We'll duly note that this should be added to your List O' Fears

Meanwhile, for the rest of us, it's spam and is best treated as such.

I give it as much run as the mail I receive offering me a bigger pecker or the Lowest Mortgage Rates EVER

And while someone connected to the White House may have momentarily thought it might be a productive enterprise, I'm sure they've figured out quickly enough it's an incredibly faulty way to create reliable information.

I've found it fairly useful over past ten years to realize that with only a few exceptions, the people working inside the Beltway are at least a decade behind the leading end of the curve when it comes to understanding the potential positive uses and also the definitely unproductive uses of the internet. That ignorance crosses into both major political parties with only a bit of difference.

Consistency is not your forte...

Erosion of rights, privacy, and collection of personal information on the citizenry...no matter how it is couched, is an issue across the board...or its not.

I'll keep that in mind the next time you give us one of your constitutional rants.

I'm very consistent on recognizing who and what is an actual threat to any significant level of privacy within our population.

And this silly less than one month folly out of the White House certainly doesn't make my grade, though I respect that perhaps it's set off the alarm bells in your own head.

"Collection of personal information" only has value if those providing the information can be accurately identified.

No such accuracy is available in any kind of blanket, "Send us 'tips' on xxxx behavior"

I've personally no fear whatsoever of the White House having hard drives full of "information" when I can be confident that the accuracy rate is likely under 10% or even lower.

It's not even about those that provide the information...

An American blogger,or whomever... has the right to exercise his free speech without the White House providing the vehicle for his name, and possibly other information to be collected, stored, and who knows what.. at said White House.

It's a pretty basic thing to understand.

If it was a Republican Prez it would be splashed on the front page of the
NY Times as a Republican enemies list.

I come here for the hypocritical lib humor ...and it never fails to deliver. @)
