Ego's NCAA Football obsevations
<HR style="COLOR: rgb(209,209,225)" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->LSU: With all the talk about Urban Meyer going to Florida and the "ballcoach" at South Carolina, not many folks are talking about Les Miles coming over from Oklahoma State replacing Nick Saban at LSU. Throw in the fact that unheralded Bo Pelini is running the defense there now, this team could sneak up on some people even though they are the best in the SEC West.

LSU did lose a few talented players on defense, but they still have great depth. Assuming JeMarcus Russell wins the QB battle, he should be alot better this seaon and the team returns most of their weapons from last season. Add to the fact that Tennessee and Florida both have to come to Baton Rouge this year, an undefeated season isn't a far-fetched goal.

USC: They're still head and shoulders above the rest of the Pac-10, but they do have to travel to Oregon early in the season, and to California in Novenmber. Add to the fact that everyone gets up for USC, it could be a bumpier road than many expect for the Trojans in 2005.

Penn State: Still not buying in to the talk of Penn State and Paterno's "rebirth" this season. They have some nice young players who can play major roles this year, but the Big 10 is just too tough and no way are they at the level to compete with the Michigan's, Iowa's and Ohio State's of the conference. I wish Paterno would have retired a few years ago. They could be 5-0 going into the Ohio State game, but the 2nd half of the schedule is brutal. They'll lose 4 of their last 6.

Pittsburgh has one of the top QB's in the nation with Tyler Palko. I'm not sure how new coach Dave Wannstedt will react to having a top signal-caller, he never got to coach one in Chicago or Miami. We'll find out in the first game of the season, when they welcome Notre Dame and new coach Charlie Weiss to town. I'll be interested to see how ND QB Brady Quinn has progressed under the tuteledge of Weiss. Could be a shootout.

LSU ain't "sneakin' up" on ANYBODY!

They are picked by practically everyone to win the SEC West and by almost everyone to win the SEC outright.

The team in the SEC West that could "sneak up" on people is Alabama. They have the defense to beat anyone....and question marks on offense......

guess i should've been more clear. I was talking "nationally"...probably should've used better examples than just SEC Teams.

Just trying to emphasize how they are being overlooked compared to other teams in the conference (Tenn, Fla, Georgia, ect)

they have an easier road to a BCS bowl than the east teams.

LSU is ranked No. 2

in my preseason power rankings behind USC.

With steadier play at the quarterback position (whether it be Russell, Flynn or even frosh Perrilleaux), the Tigers' offense has two and even three-deep talent in some cases at the skill positions.

If your defense is not up to major college Division I standards (such as UNT in the opener), LSU could rack up some nasty numbers on you.

Les Miles will gradually lead LSU into mediocrity. He is probably one of the most overrated coaches out there and a piece of shit human being to boot. Don't get me started on what Bo Pelini did to an Oklahoma secondary that was absolutely loaded with talent.

The numbers...

on Miles are pretty impressive from my standpoint which is neither emotional or fanatical, only analytical.

In his last 31 regular games as head coach at Oklahoma State, Miles was 20-11 ATS which translates into a fairly impressive 64.5 percent win rate at the window.

During his four years at OSU, Miles took a squad which had been left out of the bowls for a few years and qualified them for the postseason three of his four years.

In 2001 and '02, Miles OSU squad defeated Oklahoma outright as underdogs of 27 and 15 points respectively. Take away OU's butt whipping of the Cowboys in 2003 and Miles bettered the spread by more than 21 points in his other three meetings against Stoops and the Sooners.

Last year with no real threat in the passing game, OSU averaged more than 30 points a game offensively.

Maybe the Cowboys accomplished solid pointspread success during his tenure IN SPITE of his presence on the sideline rather than due to it, but Miles was the head coach from 2001 through 2004.

Of course, my opinion and $3 will get you a domestic longneck at Eskimo Joe's.

Badwater, nice post on LMyles. I doubt Perriloux starts at QB. We had him at a passing camp in July and he's still trying to master the passing tree. I'm scared big time as my Sundevils go to Baton Rouge Sept 10. I only hope they are looking ahead to Tennessee and allow us to be competitive. I do look forward to tailgating with the LSU Faithful as I hear it is an experience everybody should have.

Badwater,

I agree about Miles. I think he's done very well at a middle of the road program. He inherits a TON of talent at LSU and brought in a great recuiting class (again for LSU). LSU has as much talent as any team in the country. I agree that the QB play for them needs to be better. If that happens....LOOK OUT! Miles was smart to keep the OC under Saban on board. Changing the offense is the toughest part of coaching transitions. This transition will be very simple for the LSU players......
