Does anyone out there know why this is abreviation for USA in Spanish? Shouldnt it be EUA instead of EE.UU? I have been wondering about this for many years, any insight would be apreciated.

Capn Crunch,
When you say EUA in spanish means Estado Unido America. Doesn´t sound right does it??
Estados Unidos is the way to go. (According to my 9th grade teacher, lol)
If i´m not wrong EE stands for plural, like ESTADOS instead of ESTADO.
So, EE= estadoS UU= unidoS

yup its EEUU, the repetition is due to the fact that its both plural...

They funny thing is, saying United States means absolutely nothing.....

Why because your beloved neighbor to the south, Mexico, has the same title....

Estados Unidos de Mexico *or Mexicanos* (United States of Mexico)

Same as when they call themselves AMERICANS, slimmmmo.
They are not even North Americans cause they share with Mexico and Canada.
We should find a new way to call them

True that Itey......Americans.....heck we're all Americans.....

When they came up with the name I think they had in mind conquering from the tip of Chile to the last island in Canada....the name would have been useful then.

Please dont call us norteamericanos, we dont like getting grouped with Mexicans and Canadians. Stick with gringo, we know you all get angry the rest of the world calls us Americans, but it is appropriate since we were the first with America in our country name. As in United States of America. You can see how hard it was to call us United States people, so corrallarily(sp) people went with American. I know all about the continents of South and North America and Im sorry thats what we are called but thats just the way it is .

Its too bad Slim, most United States people dont know how pissed off many Latins get when America is tossed around so liberally. I will tell you what annoys me though is when you see a movie and the person uses the phrase American and you read below 9 times out of ten they translate it to norteamericano or estados unidos. You may not like it but that perpetuates a misnomer and is inflammatory in its translation. Sorry had to vent that out.

George Bush is helping make it hard for anyone outside this country to want to be even remotely associated with it :103631605

A Colombian I met there kept saying "estadounidense" when referring to me which is just way too long! Gringo is fine with me, I use it all the time.

Weird, since there are thousands of illegals still trying to get into the U.S everyday. La Nacion published a report a month ago that over 200,000 Ticos live in the U.S illegally.

They want to work here and make the money, but believe me they aren't trying to be associated with this country in any way. I think that is a great deal of the reason why there is such a backlash against immigrants here from Latin America, especially Mexico. By coming and basically living in a manner that tries to replicate home they create resentment. I am sure that sort of backlash will continue to build and eventually cause trouble for many of the gringos living in Costa Rica as well who are out trying to turn some beach towns and places like Escazu into mini American-style suburbs.
