Keeneland presents The Lexington Stakes (Grade II) on Saturday, April 22nd. This is a minor derby prep for three year olds only running 1 & 1/16 miles for a purse of $325,000. Ten horses are entered to run and post time is scheduled for 6:20 p.m. EST and will be televised live on ESPN2 starting at 6:00 p.m. EST. So far, our Horse Racing Forum handicappers have performed nicely in all the Derby preps. As the Kentucky Derby approaches on the first Saturday in May, let's continue to try an breakdown this race. All comments, thoughts and opinions are welcome. The link showing the past performances is shown below:

This is a semi-interesting race. The pace should be blazing with some tough front runners running hard on a "front-runners course". I look for Like Now (#8), Fast Parade (#9), and Special Interest (#6) to set the pace with Showing Up (#2) stalking closely behind. Special Interest should fade at the halfway point as it seems to be clearly outmatched in this race. The rest will be waiting behind. I think the race ends up like this:

Fast Parade (9) will die in the stretch, running at a distance it is unaccustomed to. I see that they have been working it out to build stamina, but I think it will run out of gas. Like Now (8) and Showing Up (2) will be gritting it out down the stretch, digging hard. I think the actual speed of the 3rd quarter of this race will be crucial. If pressed too hard I think that Greeley's Legacy (10) has a shot, as I expect him to be blazing up the stretch trying to close this out. With this being a "front-runners course", however, I think that the early lead of Like Now (8) and Showing Up (2) will be the determining factor. I look for a good gritty battle with these two. I will take the seasoned Like Now (8) to cross the finish line first and keep running right to Churchill to start prepping.

I am not scared of Special Interest (6), Gone Prospecting (1), Hemingway's Key (4), or Chin High (7). More than Regal (3) and Bear Character (5) have a slight chance to impress in the stretch run, but I don't think it will prove to be enough.

My Pick:
1st - #8 Like Now
2nd- #2 Showing Up
3rd- #10 Greeley's Legacy

That is my 2-cents....although it may only be worth a penny.
Good Luck to everyone.

Don't have any opinion on the race at this time but am leaving in a few minutes to spend the weekend in Lexington, attending the races for three days, of course.

If I happen to pick up any info I will do my best to post it here. Godd luck to all!!

I like the #8, Like Now, don't have much analysis in it; just a hunch..GLTA playing this race.

I like the 2. Looks like he's comming into his peak form to me. He's lightly raced butI'd rather go with him than the other horses that have not shown much in all their races. If he can just sit 3rd he should roll down the stretch. Good luck everybody.

p.s. too many q's with Like Now he will be at a bad price to me to have that much faith into him.

Race Update:

Track Condition: Fast
Scratches: None
Jockey Changes: Gone Prospecting (TBA)

Gone Prospecting comes off a second place finish in a restricted stakes. Decent breeze since his last race, but Beyer of 74 in his last race not nearly good enough here. Pass.

Showing Up comes off winning a non winners allowance race at a mile with a Beyer of 100 following breaking his maiden. Excellent workouts since he last raced and appears to have been pointed toward this race as he is fresh and shows every indication that he is on the improve. Expect a good performance here. Possible.

More Than Regal comes off a fourth place finish in the Lane's End (Grade II) with a Beyer of 80. Been breezing in the morning and needs a solid pace to do his best which he will probably get here. He will have to improve quite a bit to compete with the top ones here. Pass.

Hemingway's Key comes off a sixth place finish in the Lane's End (Grade II) with a Beyer of 75. Has a nice bullet breeze on this track since he last ran. Zito trained is of note. Seems to have a mid pack style. Might be there if the speed falters but must improve off recent performances. Pass.

Bear Character comes off a third place finish in a minor stakes. Been breezing in the morning. Beyers don't contend with the leaders here. Pass.

Special Interest comes off a ninth place finish in a maiden race. Lukas has over run and over worked this horse trying to get him to the Derby. Pass.

Chin High comes off winning a Grade III stakes race at this track on the turf. Once again an ambitiously placed horse with low Beyer figures in to attempt to get to the Derby. Pass.

Like Now comes off a wire to wire win in the Gotham (Grade III) with a Beyer of 105. Works in the morning indicate he has been kept tight. Believe he needs the lead to do his best. Suspect he will have difficulty in that department today. If he can rate behind the leaders might contend. Possible.

Fast Parade comes off winning the Baldwin Stakes with a Beyer of 101. Very solid workouts in the morning including a 1:38:4. Has never been two turns before but is very likely to be on the front end of this race. He seems to be improving. The question is can he go wire to wire against this group around two turns. Possible.

Greeley's Legacy comes off a badly beaten seventh place finish in the Wood Memorial (Grade I). He appears to have not liked the off track that day. His 101 Beyer in the Gotham (Grade III) puts him with these if he likes today's surface. Been kept tight in the morning. Appears to need pace to do his best and he should get that here. Possible.

This race should have a good pace to it led by Fast Parade and followed by Showing Up with Like Now chasing those two and Greeley's Legacy hoping to pick them up in the stretch. It's difficult to know if Fast Parade can go wire to wire his first time around two turns. Showing Up definitely seems to have been pointed toward this race and should be stalking Fast Parade while in second. Believe the pace will burn out Like Now but help Greeley's Legacy. I will take a stand that Fast Parade will tire and Showing Up will run him down. If not, Fast Parade will pay a nice price.

My play: Showing Up (Win Only) and Exacta Boxes with Showing Up, Fast Parade, and Greeley's Legacy.

Winner winner chicken dinner. lol Can't believe that exacta wow 25.00.
I will say this that horse will get stronger he was a little green down the stretch. Not sure about the Derby but if I owned him I would surely run him.

Hey what the hell a $5 horse isn't so bad. lol I usually try to beat the chalk but he looked like he was ready to run a monster.

LIKE NOW bobbled at the start when the ground appeared to break from under his rear feet, worked his way to the inside approaching the first turn, dueled with FAST PARADE while inside that one, went along under careful handling, lost the advantage entering the upper stretch to BEAR CHARACTER from the outside, then, while exchanging bumps with that rival through the final sixteenth, gamely earned the place. BEAR CHARACTER drifted in at the start, went up four wide to track the dueling leaders, inched to challenge nearing the stretch, gained a slim lead, then weakened when exchanging bumps with LIKE NOW in the late going. GREELEY'S LEGACY followed the leaders within easy striking distance four or five wide, was with the winner while outside that one nearing the stretch and flattened out when straightened for the drive. MORE THAN REGAL, jostled around in tight at the start, raced within easy striking distance three wide to the stretch and failed to offer a closing account. CHIN HIGH, outrun to the far turn and three or four wide, angled wider entering the lane but lacked a serious bid. FAST PARADE angled in early to vie for the lead outside of LIKE NOW, held on well for six furlongs while dueling, then tired gradually. HEMINGWAY'S KEY, in tight after the start, raced four wide, remained in contention for six furlongs, eased out wider for the drive but was empty. SPECIAL INTEREST raced five wide most of the way and never reached contention. GONE PROSPECTING, bumped after the start by SHOWING UP when that one was forced in, settled near the inside, never seriously menaced and wasn't persevered with in the stretch when hopelessly beaten. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
