Thoro-Graph's Analysis

2009 BREEDERS’ CUP LADIES’ CLASSIC
With a small field and a long run to the turn, post position isn’t that
important here.
Careless Jewel — has developed nicely, and ran extremely fast in her last
three, but it’s worth noting she didn’t do it until she switched from synthetic
to dirt. Now, it’s possible that she will turn out to be just as good on
synthetics, and getting weight, if she can run another big one she’ll be tough
here. But there would be some negatives even if this race was on dirt—she
may be feeling the effects of the three big efforts, and she basically blew
both turns at Philly last time, which is not a good sign.
Cocoa Beach (CHI) — got very good late last year, and after a layoff has
gradually been working back towards that level. Two things of note—first,
that she handled this track, and turf, very well last year. Second, that recent
one was right off the plane, and she’s been training locally since. This mare
should run at least as well this time, with a good chance to get back to her
best—which still won’t be good enough to win if Careless Jewel or Music
Note run their race, but should get her into the exotics.
Lethal Heat — ran the race of her life last time, and will take a little play
simply because she has finished close to Zenyatta a couple of times. For
those who do not follow California racing, this is what all Barry Abrams’
horses look like—they are all by Unusual Heat, and he runs them as often as
possible, until he is forced to rest them. Even if this filly repeats her last
she’s not fast enough to have an impact here, and she’s likely to bounce.
Life Is Sweet — was really good early this year, and not as good since. We
would attribute that to a difference in surface if she had run better when she
got back on Pro-Ride last time—as it is, we’re left with a filly that has one
back figure that makes her relevant, and it’s tough to tell when she will run
back to it, if ever. Still, she can be used underneath in exotics.
Mushka — ran the best race of her life last time, but the bad news is that she
has a clear history of reacting badly to big efforts, at two, three, and twice
earlier this year. Even if she did repeat it wouldn’t help much, so she’s not
for us.
Music Note — was a very good 3yo, and significantly, ran very well over
this track in defeat last year. The Godolphin barn wasn’t doing well early in
the year, but made a complete turnaround starting in July, and this filly’s last
two have been huge. Music Note has had ideal rest, she handles this track,
she’s been on the grounds for a while, and her last two are faster then
Zenyatta has ever run—that one’s connections made a very good decision to
run against the boys.
Proviso (GB) — was a decent grass filly in France, and jumped to a new top
when she came here, ran on poly, and probably most importantly, got Lasix.
There’s a good chance she’ll bounce off that last, but even if she pairs up,
several in here are faster.
Rainbow View — is a nice British 3yo grass filly that was first-time Lasix
last out, to no noticeable effect. She gets a little weight from her elders here,
but she would have to improve a great deal for that to be relevant, and
there’s no reason to expect that.
Bottom line — Careless Jewel isn’t training well and we don’t think she’s
going to run well. Rainbow View isn’t that fast or training great, for that
matter. Godolphin’s two are training well, and they hold a strong hand here
again, with Music Note a likely winner, and Cocoa Beach having a very

good chance for second or third.

Good Luck

Appears the only speed in this race is Careless Jewel. She should be able to set an easy pace while the stalkers and closers follow. Looks like wire to wire from here.
