I've got to weigh in on all the posts that I'm reading about those supporting the Terps tonight.

I have been a lifelong Maryland fan; I'm from Maryland; I went to Maryland; and hell, even my wife is a Maryland grad.

From a betting standpoint, I'd love for someone to explain to me how you think the Terps cover this game?

Let's look at Maryland's Season:

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=2 width="100%" bgColor=#999999 border=0><TBODY><TR align=left><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ecece4>10/8/2005</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>@ TEM</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W 38-7 </TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>-29/53.5</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W/U</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>246</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>110</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>136</TD></TR><TR align=left><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ecece4>10/1/2005</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>VIRG</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W 45-33 </TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>-3/44</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W/O</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>164</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>114</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>50</TD></TR><TR align=left><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ecece4>9/24/2005</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>@ WFRST</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W 22-12 </TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>1.5/46</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W/U</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>87</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>51</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>36</TD></TR><TR align=left><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ecece4>9/17/2005</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>WVIRG</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>L 19-31 </TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>-3.5/42</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>L/O</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>-46</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>-251</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>205</TD></TR><TR align=left><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ecece4>9/10/2005</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>CLEM</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>L 24-28 </TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>2.5/41.5</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>L/O</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>52</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>-58</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>110</TD></TR><TR align=left><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ecece4>9/3/2005</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>@ NAVY</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>W 23-20 </TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>-8/42.5</TD><TD class=arial_11px bgColor=#ffffff>L/O</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>84</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>-36</TD><TD class=arial_11px align=right bgColor=#ffffff>120</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

You will notice that they started off with a win over Navy; but if you watched that game, Maryland was beatin soundly and trailed by DD most of the game, and probably should have lost. Then, they come home and lose to an OK Clemson team - giving up a 38-yd TD run with under 3 minutes to go. Next, they lose to a decent WV team, again, in front of the home crowd. The Terps cut that game to a 2-point game with 8:00 minutes to go and then gave up the final 10 points to lose by 12.
OK, so they go on the road and beat an OK Wake team and then the only real "quality" win is a home win against their biggest football rivals - UVA. This is a good win and can be the only handicapping angle that people will use to support the Terps. Oh, and don't let the 12-point margin fool you...this was a 5 point game until MD scored a TD with 1:00 left.
Oh yeah, and they beat the little blind sisters of PA (AKA Temple).

Virginia Tech is without a doubt the class of the ACC and should have a pretty easy time handling the Terps on both sides of the ball.

My Play: Virginia Tech -9 1/2
And possibly the better play: Virginia Tech -6 1/2 1st Half (+108)

Good luck to anyone who plays this game and any other game....everyone's goal is to win, so let's win.:103631605

Thanks.

Mr. Newlywed.

Think this one could get ugly early. VT special teams is very good -- 4 Def/SP Teams TD's in the past three games.

Let's cash tonight!

How can a true die-hard fan EVER bet against his team? I'm baffled/astonished.

My reason is I see a steady improvement in Terps play. If this game came off a month ago I would be all over the Hokies. Having watched them play Wake and Virginia after seeing their early game against W. Virginia I saw much improvement. I don't think they will win but I do think they keep it around 7 or 8. Friedgen was pissed after last years game and I don't think he's forgotten it. If they are still friends Beamer may not be so likely to run it up this time or leave the back door open.
And finally weird shit happens on Thursday nights games.

Skins...

don't be baffled. There is a very big difference between betting with your heart and betting with your head.

I may be different from other fans, in that I can objectively look at any game and play it from a bettors stand point. I am a monster Redskins fan. I was born and raised in Washington, DC and have loved them for my entire 33 years of being alive.

That doesn't mean that I can't look at a game that the Skins are playing and say, "this team cannot cover this spread".

I have bet on and against the Skins in my life and there are different feelings between being a fan of a team and betting on or against them. I guess I'm just different, in that I can do both.

Jinn - much respect for your reasons. I too have noticed an improvement in the Maryland team from the Navy game to the Virginia game; however that improvement has been against decent, but not top 10 quality opponents.
Virginia Tech is a Top 5 team and my guess is that they will show why they are a Top 5 team tonight against an inferior Maryland team.
You are also correct that strange things happen on Thursday nights, but this Thursday night, will not be one of them :)

Best of luck.

I'm a die-hard Skins fan as well, and I realize that you can look at a game objectively and say, "they can't cover," but to bet AGAINST them...I could never do it, especially not against the Skins. And I think most die-hards couldn't either for their teams.

I'm sure you've had success, though. Just my personal feelings on the matter.

So, a fumble at the goal line and a doink off the upright kept me from winning the first half bet, but I still cashed the VT ticket, and pretty easily I might add.
The Terps surprised me with their play in the first half, but more than anything, I think VT just didn't execute to score the points inside the redzone.
The second half showed you why VT is a top 5 team.

Congrats to all VT backers!

Pops, find a nearby Div III school to invest your heart in. Mine for about 20 years has been Mt. Union. Couldn't have picked better.

Amen. My fave tonite was VPI. Tomorrow it'll be UCF. Sat will be my $$$, but my heart'll be with the Purple Raiders who I've never put a cent on except for tickets and gear.

Totally agree with UCF...already bet them at -6, as IMO, the line will move to a TD or more by KO.

Good luck to all.

OK. I'll post my weekend plays later on.
Had a pretty good college season so far, but just don't like to post...like many, I use the forums as a handicapping tool, but make my own selections and make my own decisions about which games to play.

I have a tough time understanding how people go into good cappers threads and blame them for losing and bash them. Each individual calls in or places their online bets with no one holding a gun to their heads.

We are all responsible for our own plays.
