I realize its an exciting time of year with bowl games on TV every day and night. But please be careful. It is a great time to build your bankroll. However, if you lose sight of the big picture, its a great time to go belly up too.

Just because there are a few bowl games on tonight, that's not a reason to lay a bet. Furthermore, if you do make a play, don't get excited and play more than your standard unit. Its just another game and there is another game tomorrow and the next day.

There are some really good cappers here in the Rx. If your one who follows one these guys, thats great, but pick one or two cappers and stick with them. If you try to listen to every opinion your bankroll will suffer. I've noticed some really strong opinions lately too. Yesterday there were some really good reads on both ND and OSU. Some bordered on hype, but for the most part, really good reasoning on both sides. Make your decision, play your unit and manage your money wisely. That's what smart gambling is all about.

Just a reminder from someone who has been there and not afraid to admit it. I would guess that many of you have too. GL to all.

Yup!

I'm with you 100% Stilwell. I couldn't get a feel whatsoever on the Miami and Iowa State game last night, so I stayed away. Liked the Under though and played it. Couldn't get a real grip on any stat or reason, and cappers I respect were also split.

Same thing on today's match between the 2 OSU's, though I am leaning to OSU (nyuk nyuk!). Today I do like UTEP and was on them yesterday.

Good luck today!

Hey Stilwell..

EXCELLENT advise on your part!!

You are totally correct with everything you said, personally I have been handicapping for more years than I want to say ( I really don't want to reveal my age! ) and like most I had to learn the hard way about the most important, but also most over looked aspect of gambling....and that's money management!

There's a gentleman that works with my husband and stops over our house every now and then to watch a game with us and he has used our phone a few times to call in his bets with his local book, I tried to explain to him that he was hurting himself by not using a few offshore accounts, but of course he wouldn't listen.

Some people have heads of stone and simply do not understand the importance of line-shopping to get the best available number on a game, goodness knows that a 1/2 point here and there has saved me hundreds and hundreds of dollars over time.

Another common thing that I see novices doing is to significantly raise their wager amounts because they did good last weekend, to me how hard is it to figure out that if you bet $100 a game and go 5-0 one week which means that you won $500....

....and then turn around and bet $200 a game the next week and go 0-5 and thus lose $1100...that you are a FOOL because over the two week period you went 5-5 on your bets but lost $600!!!

Its hard enough as it is to eek out a winning season, but not to first of all line-shop for the best available number and not to use sound money management is plain stupid in my humble opinion.

To me, its all about the mindset...you have to think about gambling as a business or like your 401k or stock investments with regard to being very dogged and determined to show a profit.

I just shake my head in amazement when I read some of the posts on this board and others, for the most part I think there are ALOT of solid handicappers on this board and goodness knows that I have grown to respect their opinions enough to lay off a game if they are firmly on the other side of a game....but what bothers me is the many who don't even TRY to handicap the games on their own.

There is so much FREE handicapping information that is readily available on the internet these days that there is really no excuse to BEG others for their plays, don't get me wrong...there is NOTHING wrong with getting the opinions of others and using those opinions in a constructive matter.

However, this is a handicapping board and as such there has to be some "Give and Take", meaning that way too many are takers of information because they are too lazy to do some homework or research on their own.

I personally learned a long time ago that I had no one to blame for losing except for myself and thus decided to take the bull by the horns and made myself LEARN how to handicap, the funny thing is there wasn't much to learn...it all comes down to putting time into researching the teams involved in a given game.

Take care and good luck!!

I am speaking from experience.....4 years ago, when I began placing wagers, I won a couple hundred bucks, keep in mind, I was only gambling $50 a wager, and thought that I would place all my earnings from the entire season all on the bowl games.....was not looking at the big picture, but looking to get ALOT of $$$$ within a few days....Anyways, I ended up losing close to $2500 and trust me, I have learned my lesson about money management and also that gambling is a marathon, not a sprint.....

GL TO ALL

Hey Packerfan43630..

"Life is like a box of choclates...you never know what yer gonna git"

Meaning of course that we NEVER actually know whether we are going to win or lose when placing a bet, that's why its called gambling!

Me, you, and probably everyone else that has ever gambled on anything has taken our lumps when we first started, the trick is too LEARN from the lumps you recieved in the early going!

take care and good luck!

Great sharing of info here. There are so many new posters coming onboard that we should try as often as possible to throw these ideas out there for their learning.
