So yesterday my girlfriend and I finally dropped by Don Doner and I'd like to share my review, most of which isn't very good unfortunately.
First, I'd like to say we're a little annoyed by their delivery service. Here is the history on that:
Attempt 1: We call at about 7:10PM and are told they can't to Santa Ana at that hour as their guy is already out on his last run. Completely understandable, no problem here. They tell us next time to call by 7PM.
Attempt 2: We call at 6:45PM and are told the same story, we ask why we were told to call before 7PM then and they say no, call before 6:30PM now. Ok, forget this, we'll just head down there in person to pick up our own food another day. That day was yesterday, for lunch.
We get there and there are a few people outside eating and one guy waiting for his order inside. We are inside, waiting to even be acknowledged and our order taken for a solid 25 minutes. Basically, the three employees proceeded to make every item for the guy and I guess other delivery orders before even taking our order. Once we did order, it took us another 25 minutes of waiting for it. Total, almost an hour wait time with 1 guy in front of us when we came in.
We ordered quite a few different items, to get a taste for their whole menu selection:
2x Poutine
1x Kefte Kebab combo (greek fries, drink)
1x Gyro Chicken combo (greek fries, drink)
1x Falafel sandwich
1x Pita with Hummus
Here are my reviews of each item:
Poutines
Whoever was the genius who thought that they should put the hot Poutine inside the thinnest wax paper in the world (inside styrofoam bowl) should be put out of the misery he calls life. We spent a good chunk of time trying to determine what was melted cheese and what was melted wax paper, which ruined what otherwise would have tasted fairly decent. Then again I grew up in Montreal, so I've had tons of poutines in my lifetime and this one just doesn't stack up.
"World Famous" Greek Fries
I never knew burnt, greasy fries with a kilo of salt and tiny bit of seasoning poured on them qualify as "World Famous". Again, I grew up with many Greek neighbors and love eating Greek and these are NOT anything close to Greek Fries. They aren't even the right shape. I suggest the owner perhaps take an actual trip to Greece instead of Grease.
Kefte Kebab
I thought this one tasted pretty decent except it also had way, way too much salt in it. Pretty good though, but you are better off getting it from a real Lebanese place.
Gyro Chicken
This tasted like a mix of dish soap and wax paper. Completely disgusting. How do you fuck up chicken? I guess they found the secret.
Falafel Sandwich
My girlfriend loves Falafel and she said this sandwich was awful. The Falafel tasted exactly like the "Greek" fries.
Pita with Hummus
This tasted pretty good, the hummus could use a bit of lemon juice but aside from that it was probably the most edible item we ordered.
CONCLUSION:
A huge disappointment, Costa Rica is still in need of someone offering quality Greek food (and poutines). At least all the Lebanese/Mediterranean items can be had elsewhere here.
We will DEFINITELY never go back or try to order from there again. I'm sure they wouldn't want us as customers now anyhow.
