Having the college football semifinals on New Years Eve seems like a bad idea to me for multiple reasons.

Honestly I didn't watch either of those night games the 31st. People want to party. Good thing for me Nebraska won't be there.

NOBODY tells the Rose Bowl when to play it's game. It will be at 5:00 pm EST (2:00 pm PST) on New Years Day except when 1/1 falls on a Sunday, when it gets pushed back a day. The Rose Bowl Committee, Big 10 and Pac 12 really do not give a crap about what anyone else thinks. That is the way it has been and that is the way it will be. End of that discussion. The Sugar Bowl would be smart to follow suit and keep their game at 8:00 pm right after the Rose Bowl. Let the other bowls worry about when their games start. They are basically worthless unless they are hosting a Semi game anyways.

I don't have to worry about OU this year either. The 8pm game will be ending around midnight, which seems like a horrific setup if either of those teams are in the CST time zone. It will make it an extra shitty New Years if that team loses. Hopefully the second game will be the least interesting one this year since I'm usually out and about on amateur night

I agree that it probably won't change with the Rose and Sugar Bowls, but they really should have had a better alternative to this when they first came up with the playoff idea. What's wrong with Saturday? Seems I recall a few college games in the past being played on Saturday...

I was thinking that too. Especially if it is one of the more invested regions/fan bases.

What did you expect? It took them forever just to get this far. The NCAA is nothing more than a bunch of old men who want nothing to do with change. They are like the old farts you see driving down the street at 8 MPH because they are afraid to go any faster. I think all of us wanted to see an 8 team playoff and the elimination of one of the cream puff regular season games to make this a realistic goal, but the NCAA would not have it. Now we are stuck with a 4 team playoff, a guarantee that one Power 5 Conference gets shut out, and possibly more, and the real possibility of a Power 5 Conference breaking up if they cannot find some school other than two schools who'se total seating capacity is less than Texas and soon to be Oklahoma to represent them. I ask this. Which game as a fan, would you rather see.. Oklahoma at TCU or Oklahoma at USC? Which game brings in the most money?

Yeah, NYE should be for 1 or 2 meaningless games. Not games that have this much riding on it. People have other plans and it's FREAKING NEW YEAR'S EVE!

Not only that, the media should have figured out by now that not every college football fan has a degree and aren't all lawyers and doctors with their own hours who can get off work early to catch the first game. I've been to LA during rush hour. Good luck getting the west coast to watch a game with a 3pm/4pm kickoff when they are stuck in traffic for 2 hours...I think ESPN is going to take a hit on this deal..

Good points.

They should have found a time, like last season, where they are "the only game in town" (so that every TV set in America is set to the game/s).

I guess this falls under the category of it is what it is. Surely the NCAA and the TV networks tossed this one around before settling on NYE. I will probably watch both games. I would rather have had one at like 12:00 PM and the other at 4:00 pm. Peach bowl should be moved to 8:00.

The Network brass are usually not the type to do things that guarantee that they lose money, but this thing kind of baffles me. My guess is for some reason they don't have a choice but to air it on this day, or they are willing to roll the dice to see what kind of viewership New Years Eve brings in. If this is the case I'm betting this will only be a one year experiment...

Very likely.
