Dodgers get Thome from White Sox, Garland from D'Backs

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired veteran slugger Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox in a waiver trade deadline deal.

The White Sox received infielder Justin Fuller in the deal, while the Dodgers also got cash considerations.

Thome was a designated hitter for Chicago this season, hitting .249 with 23 homers and 74 runs batted in. He played in the National League once before, when he was with the Phillies from 2003-05 and played first base.

The Dodgers also acquired pitcher Jon Garland from the Diamondbacks, who on Monday opened a four-game series at Dodger Stadium. Arizona received a player to be named later.

Garland went 8-11 with a 4.29 earned run average in 27 starts for the Diamondbacks this season.

we have to pay rois huge contract somehow...

geez kenny williams got us in a mess now... huge contracts, not a winning team... no money to spend....

I am glad we got something in return. I know nothing of Justin Fuller but we needed to get younger.. good peices with beckham and getz...

I will be pissed if we dont resign Dye. we need him. I say let go of Paul Konerko if we need to dump money...

but we need dye...

Dye is a major reason for the Sox slide.

The whole White Sox took a shit. Beckham hit the rookie wall and went from a .313 average to .270, Dye and Thome are in the midst of a slump. Pods forgot how to field and run the bases. Contreras started pitching like he was on the Yankees again and Mark Buehrle has been a dog since that perfect game. Linebrink is a fuckin bum and Jenks doesn't have the pitches a closer should have anymore. Plus they have one of the worse defending teams in the history of baseball.

Impossible to underestimate the effect of a left handed power hitter off the bench. Increases the dodgers depth and gives them options they did not have before.

I actually see it hard for Thome to get a postseason at bat. When the situation dictates for Thome to pinch hit in a crucial spot the Dodgers opponents will have a lefty specialist warming up to pitch to Thome. Thome likes to strike out to and he only has opposite field power not average so they put the shift on him. If Thome could get a start or two at firstbase he would be more effective.

Thome doesn't have much in the tank. Garland is a #4 starter these days.

Moves are not as significant as most people will make you believe.
