I disagree. The guy turned down millions. He gained NOTHING by staying at USC.

Yes -- he is a role model. Stay in school, remember that football is just a game and keep your commitments.

This decision may very well cost IOWA the National Championship.

Would have liked to seen him turn his attention to the NFL.

HORRIBLE decision. I'm all for education and think that the current NCAA b-ball situation is absurd BUT for Leinhart this one should have been easy.

He's a Heisman winner, national champion, and number one draft pick. He gains nothing professionally by staying in school. If he intended on doing something other than playing football for a living then the decision would be good but his value as a player will NEVER be as high as it is right now.

He can always go back to school. His window of opportunity to play football is quite narrow and AT BEST this decision may net him a few million if the value for players rises AT WORST this decision costs him tens of millions of dollars.

To me this seems like a negative EV play.

IOWA needs to go undefeated through the Big Ten. Then they can be concerned with USC. Frankly, I hope Iowa kicks ass, if for no other reason than because I dislike many of their foes.

Best luck!!

I think it's a horrible decision. Automatically saying guys should, "stay in school," is one of these motherhood statements that I don't buy. I say, "Stay in school if it makes sense."

I guess my thinking is that the guy is risking serious injury and 10's of millions of dollars in signing bonuses - and the security of his future - family and whatever else that may hold. Unexpected things happen in life. Suppose someone close to him suddenly requires exorbitantly expensive cancer treatments but, because of a blown out knee, he's selling used cars.

I dunno. Maybe he's insured up to the eyeballs and my thinking is out of order but that's my reaction.

the problem I have with his decision is that i disagree that you should do what your heart tells you. not true. you have to be a man. a man who takes responsibility. matt's family raised him to get him to this position. matt cannot be so selfish that he only cares about himself. he has to think of others as well. he would have made a boatload of money, and unfortunately, that is more important than his selfish desire to play more college football.

matty needs to grow up, be a man, and do what is right to support his family. of course, it is his decision and i respect it. but i think he is VERY wrong here.

I think his family has money.

It is never about the money when you already have it. Funny how that works.

His stock can only go down

How pissed off is the #2 QB at USC?

i'm not sure where to start on this one..

he needs to be a man and support his family?..does he already have a wife and kids, you know, mortgage, private school, all that? if he's going to usc, i doubt his parents need any support from him, and if need be, he could probably get a real job with his degree.

his family raised him to get him to this position?.....so, if he wasn't an outstanding football player would his parents have not paid for his college education?

it's funny how people criticize athletes for leaving high school to go pro because they miss out on the college experience and say that there's more to life than money, and then criticize them for staying in college and not going pro because of all the money that's to be made.

if there's room in the nfl for a drew henson, there will always be room for a matt leinart.

JMan-

We know it is HIS descision but the question was posed here for analysis.

Bottom line, it is a bad business decision but an excellent personal decision. This guy clearly loves USC but if he intends to be a professional football player he has little to gain and SOOOOO much to lose. It is not like he is going to become a better NFL QB over the next year. He's probably learned as much as he can from the NCAA experience.

every player you can think of would stay in college if they didnt need the money.

leinhart doesnt need the money, so he gets to stay. think of all the poor saps who had to leave early becuase they have 3 kids and a crack head grandmother who is about to be evicted. they all wish they could stay.

college is a blast who the hell wouldnt want another year of being BMOC?!?

get real, how stupid are you if you think its a bad descion?! lol goofballs

No, I think it's a bad decision. But it's his decision to make, and who knows what his considerations are. Actually in regard to money, I think it's just the opposite, that those who say "it's only money" usually don't have any.

buffalo hes already got money.

he doesnt have to fit college into his schedule he can just relax and get a degree and win a national title.

of course the BMOC lifestyle is better especially when youre getting a degree with no other worrys but football. it beats the crap out of i hope my piss test is clean lifestyle of the NFL any day.

I guess we won't know for sure if its bad or not til next year. As long as he's happy with it, that's really all that matters.

ok, money is no object we all agree on that. so. . .

option a) win a national title, be acclaimed as one of the greatest in NCAA for decades to come. pick up a degree. be the poster boy at your school and the entire college football world.

option b) get drafted by a team that stinks. go 2-14 as a back up while you sit on the bench week after week

i dont know why this is so hard
