I have heard this coming up in the news and wanted to know other people3s thoughts. I have always thought it was strange because if you kill someone it seems to be hateful no matter what their color, religion or sexual orientation.

Definitely not.

Our criminal system is based on punishing people for what they
did wrong, not why they did it.

It's a bunch of fucking bullshit.

Every time there is a heinous crime our lawmakers fall all over themselves to make somthing illegal that was already illegal.

I posted about this a few weeks ago but nobody cared. this piece of legislation is set to kill your freedom of speech but it's not being discussed because of obamacare, cash for clunkers, and and other govt spending programs.

of course they call it the "Hate Crimes Bill" so that the general population will just assume it MUST be passed, although it really has much less to do with 'hate crimes' as it does with 'hate speech'. So if you want to blog about your negative feelings toward homosexuality, the holocaust, or about the new illegals that are in your town, enjoy your time behind bars!

WOW.....u think this bill is about assault crimes????????

Preaching from the Bible is hate under this Bill.
Offending ANYONE with ANY speech is HATE under this bill.
If your neighbors dont like your attitude you are guilty of HATE.... There is virtually NOTHING that you say or do that cannot be interpreted by some wise latino judge as HATE under this Bill.
Between the Patriot ACT, this Hate Crime Bill and the Cap and Trade Bill any person in this country that the GOVT wants to jail can be found guilty of something at a moments notice....Article out today reports Obama is wanting to build a new Federal Prison just for terrorists.....It will be the 1st of many i assure you...

I'm split on this, in a proper respectful society hate crimes legislation is good to have have on the books.

Yes murder is murder but if the difference between you being murdered and not being murdered (Or Assualted etc) is the colour of your skin, your sexual orientation or your religious beliefs hate crimes laws, should act as a deterrent.

But your government (I say government because both sides are fucking you) will screw things up.

You have privatized Prisons for goodness sakes, Prison companies are traded on the stock exchange. The goal of a public company is to increase profits and make the share price rise. How does a prison company increase profits? It Increases prisoners and by lobbying your law makers to make more things illegal.

Report back as soon as anyone is actually arrested, prosecuted and convicted solely based on personal opinions they write in a weblog.

I won't hold my breath

KB, if the punishment for just regular ole murder is not already a deterrent, then I would argue that there is no effective deterrent for the murderer.

Is the reason you haven't murdered someone the punishment you would receive?

of course not

are you trying to say you want to legislate emotions?

or words?

connecting the dots is a little tricky and very much subjective

I know you're concerned about the muslims using it to their advantage but we've had the law in Canada and they have failed to sue a couple of major publications for inciting hate for a few articles that were published.

And it the law has been successfully used to additional punishment for a man in his 20's who broke a gay man's jaw with a sucker punch on a public street.

But like I said before your government will screw it up somehow.

"Muslims screwing it up"? is that code for I think it's pretty fucking ridiculous? You see, in this country, we have what is known as "the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution", that some pretty big chit man.

Freedom of expression is also a widely recognized right throughout civilized societies.

I'm more about substantive issues and more about substance over form. Don't want anybody arrested over words. As time moves on, we'll be able to arrest people over thoughts too.

Now if somebody repeatedly encourages that a crime be committed, and a crime is actually committed based on his words, I'm pretty sure that's already illegal.

I think you got that Muslim issue backwards.
