Ridiculous what these salaries have become. It's pretty bad when a horrible team has to try to give up the first pick because they have so many needs and can't spend it all on one player.

a rookie salary cap could easily pass during the next CBA;
the lions will suck next year regardless of who they take so if they negotiate a contract pre draft with say Jason Smith and pay him less than a first pick qb; the lions will probably be in top 5-7 picks next year and Bradford, and Colt McCoy, etc will be available to them in 2010;

who knows maybe josh freeman will be available first pick of second round

I doubt that very much but he could possibly be there at pick 20, which detroit also has. I'm not very big on Freeman though. More than likely he doesn't make it past Tampa at #19.

excellent point, i saw nate davis play in college, the guy is a gamer - Lions would do well to (if possible) drop to about 6-8 get a good young tackle and an extra pick

Unless something is done about these salaries, it will not be long before we actually see a team looking to trade their 1st overall pick plus a late round pick just to get OUT of that draft position.

When there is not a clear-cut player worthy of the outrageous 1st pick salary, it is more of a burden than a blessing to possess these top picks.
