this is a GREAT example of an uneducated bettor liking a game.

if you liked the broncos - the time to do so was when this line was -4.5 or -5 EARLIER in the week - NOT NOW!

you now lose a TON of value betting the broncos for you have gone "thru" the "key number" of 6. might as well wait until it gets to -7 (and it will) then you can TRULY bet the broncos on a bad number.

what i am trying to say is you MUST know where the number started and where it is now - and once it goes against you 2 FULL POINTS - and thru some key numbers - it is time to back away and pass on the game entirely.

om - NFL - Take 2: Broncos vs. Bengals
Scouts Inc.

Tuesday, our scouts filed their advance advance scouting report on this
week's matchup between the Broncos and Bengals. Now they're back with a
second look.

The battle between the Broncos' offensive line and the Bengals' defensive
front seven will be one to watch. The Broncos use a heavy dose of zone
blocking schemes, while the Bengals have good quickness and penetrating
skills. If the Bengals are quick off the snap and can "shoot the gaps,"
they can disrupt the Broncos' power run game, but if they play the game on
their own side of the line of scrimmage Reuben Droughns will wear them
down.

The Bengals like to use three-receiver sets with a pass offense that
features layers, but defenses are blitzing QB Carson Palmer so much that
the Bengals are starting to rein in their offense. The Bengals may be
forced to leave backs and tight ends in to block and for blitz pickup.
This limits Palmer's weapons, which is not good, but neither is getting
hit on every play.

CB Champ Bailey is impacting this Broncos' defense in subtle ways.
His cover skills allow him to shutdown the opponent's top receiver and in
essence take away half of the field. That allows the safeties to help out
in coverage on the other half of the field or to help in run support and
blitz packages.

When you defend the Broncos' zone blocking running game, the Bengals'
defensive linemen must attack vertically, sustaining pressure upfield. You
cannot react laterally, or will allow the Broncos' offensive line to
execute cut blocks, and get to the second level of the defense. In
addition, if you attack upfield, you get in the backfield quickly and
eliminate options for Droughns.

When you play against the Broncos, you have to be very conscious of the
continuity between the Broncos' zone run game and the designed movement of
Jake Plummer in the bootleg passing game. The two work in tandem, and it
puts a tremendous mental and physical strain on the backside defenders.
They are caught in a conflict: Do you pursue hard down the line to play
the run, or do you stay at home and play your contain responsibility
versus Plummer?

The biggest problem facing the Bengals' offense right now is the
inconsistency of their OL play. The Bengals have been unable to generate a
consistent running game using their two staple running plays: "Power" to
the TE, or strong side of the formation, and "Iso lead", with the fullback
Jeremi Johnson leading into the hole.

The inability of the Bengals to run the ball consistently has forced
Palmer into too many second-and-long, and third-and-long situations.
Watching Palmer on tape, you see a QB who is searching, rather than
reading, the defense. The Broncos play a lot of man and zone combinations
in coverage, and it will difficult for Palmer to decipher where to throw
the football.

It is shocking to see on film how fundamentally unsound the Bengals are on
defense, considering head coach Marvin Lewis' defensive background. Their
gap control and discipline is shoddy, they overrun holes and leave big run
lanes. They struggle to get off blocks and even when they do, they are
lousy tacklers. They are not very talented to start with, but they could
be more effective if they were disciplined.

Cincinnati defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is taking some heat for
the poor performance of this defense. In fact, Marvin Lewis has taken over
some of the play-calling duties and some people think that Frazier is
simply in over his head, but in fairness to him the talent at his disposal
is not overwhelming.

The matchup for the Bengals' defense versus the passing game is a problem
because of the Broncos' run game. The Bengals' safeties will have to spend
so much time in run support that they will put their corners on an island
in man-to-man schemes. The Broncos do not usually throw much to their
backs, but RB Quentin Griffin may get some reps in the passing game and
the Broncos will attack OLB Kevin Hardy.

JohnsonAs poorly as Palmer is playing, the poor performance of the offense
is not entirely his fault. His receivers had almost double-digit dropped
passes last week, they can't separate from man-to-man coverage and Palmer
is getting hit entirely too much because of poor blitz pickup. His best
weapon, WR Chad Johnson, is doing more talking than pass catching and
concentration is fading.

Mike Shanahan is taking full advantage of Plummer's ability to put
pressure on the edges of the defense with rollouts and bootlegs. When he
rolls out or bootlegs it simplifies his reads and he only has to work half
of the field. Versus a Bengals defense that tends to overpursue he may
have some room to run. The Broncos' success in the run game increases the
value of play-action, which gives Plummer good one-on-one matchups.

The Bengals really miss having WR Peter Warrick working out of the slot.
He is a safety blanket for Palmer on underneath and intermediate routes.
His protection is so bad that vertical routes are out of the question.
The Broncos used two-tight end sets 62 times last week and a lot of it was
with motion, using the tight ends as lead blockers in the run game. Versus
a weak Bengals run defense, two-tight end power-run formations should give
Droughns a lot of room to run.

Special Teams

The Bengals are struggling on both sides of the ball and are continually
losing the battle of field position. They lack big-play capability on
return teams, which is putting added pressure on the offense.

Prediction: Broncos 28, Bengals 14

fair point. no argument then with you - i just hope others who like denver realize at the current price it is a BAD bet! i don't care if denver wins by 30 - it is still a bad bet laying 6.5/7 when it was 4.5 days ago.

I agree Winky. Anyone whose's opening bet is Denver -6 or higher is a novice and unless they are betting for entertainment purposes they need a less expensive hobby. 5.5 was widely available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The whole square world is gonna be on Denver by kickoff and they will gladly lay 7.5 too. Lot of people looking to get out of the trap on this game especially with no Sunday night game.

I will gladly take Cinci +7.5

WInkyduck, with all due respect, that is one the most idiotic things I have ever heard. If he capped it at Denver by 30, he should pass at 6.5? If so, Denver at 6.5 isn't a bad bet, it's just not the perfect bet.

Lets say you go to an auction. You see something you think you can sell later for $500, and the bidding starts at $250. If the bidding got to $300, would you stop bidding?

100k by xmas:

If anyone with capped it at 30, or even 130 why would they not get down when it opens at 4.5 or after the first move to 5? Why wait till 6, 6.5, 7, or 7.5?

Maybe he was spent the week partying with the Bush twins and just got home? What's it matter?

All that matters is what the line is now, what you think it might do later, and who you think will win.

Broncos

I see both sides of this argument, getting the line at the best possible point, etc...

But i also believe that the line could go to double digits and there would still be value with Denver. They have the advantage in every statistical category. In away favorite situations the Broncos are outscoring opponents by 10 - in home underdog situation the Bengals are getting outscored by 15 (although just 1 game).

Final Score - Denver 30 Cincy 16

Sometimes you just have to go with your gut!!

I usually hate betting road Favs, but this is a big one for me. My system relies heavily on rushing and rush defense. The Broncos are high on the list right now and may come out #1 after this week. Anything can happen though, esspecially on Monday Night. I am from a different school of thought though than you. I bet the same on every game and it is only %2 of my bank roll. I do this to stay consistent and weather storms. It has worked well for me over the years. I "unload" in the playoffs though because I am the type of player that likes to win big or not win at all since I don't mind losing my initial investment. Good Luck though and GO BRONCOS!!!!

I think this is exactly why gambling and bookies start out in the first place.

We have both sides think they are right...and the bookies stay in the middle to collect the juices.

Glaken, awesome write up man. Very much appreciated! So do you think it would be a good parlay with Denver and the over tonight?

Couple of things:

Those who bet 1-2% of bankroll can do well betting early-- i don't like to bet more than a couple hours before an event, never mind a week-- or more for futures bets.

As far as 'A' game I agree with 100K by XMAS...

As far as 'THIS' game, for those looking at Denver:

Though there is the vaunted NFL "Parity"-- the outcome of most games can be reversed with one play / td, and most games can be teased successfully by just flipping a coin-- either way in other words, there are still a significant number of mismatch blowouts that should be treated differently: where if you see the line go too far against the underdog, it won't help to take it. For example, this is not the case of an overrated marquee team full of underperforming, selfish, prima donnas already looking past the present matchup into next week-- it's totally the opposite: an improving team looking to prove that they belong in the upper echelon of the league. Icings on the cake are that key players are out for an opponent whose three key areas of offense, defense & special teams are vastly inferior-- AND to boot they're a team whose performance has getting worse as the season has progressed.

Assuming this is a colossal mismatch-- (and very telling that we can't find one single poster making one single positive comment re CINN)-- we are fortunate that several conditions exist to A. keep the line/odds playable, & B. to ward off an upset.

A. It's football, on the road, a QB & offense that aren't the gunslinger type & do not / have not blown out most of their to boot so-so opponents, never mind a 'marquee' team.

B. Not a single positive factor about Cinciinnati can be dug up, except that they will have underdog motivation today. However, their weaknesses in each of their offense, defense & special teams play to Denver's strengths, and to boot they have injuries at key positions.
Additionally, there isn't the "look past a crappy opponent factor": as this is MNF, not Sunday; AND Denver still has some things to prove to itself re jelling their offense & joining the ranks of elite teams.

These are two teams headed in opposite directions: one is improving, the other is markedly declining-- to the point that Cincinnati may not win another game this season... the situation there is that dire.

I picture Broncos outplaying Bengals in every facet of the game-- to the point where they might even shut them out. Whether they score enough compensatory points to boost the total Over is not nearly as apparent as the win itself-- though there may be a chance to also hit in this area with a second half bet: Cincinnati may come out fired up to still be in the ballpark at the half-- that's the best-case scenario for them-- in which instance a second half wager on Denver(yes-- double up, no need to hedge this game) and/or the Over will be called for... unless if Denver is far ahead by then.

And speaking of squares-- this is the kind of gimme game that prompts lots of folks to exclaim, "Man, this game is easy! I can make a real nice living with this!".... only to be handed their arse on a platter the following week.

So, even though taking the worst of it with the line shift-- i will more than likely take a major bankroll stance with this game-- and if wrong i'll be forced into exile until next year. A few locks of the year come along once in a while: which are a shame to hit with anything less than both guns blazing... i'm already in line at the cashier's window.

Be$t regard$....... and thank you much Glaken!!

What if Rueben Drones runs for 150+ yards and Denver sacks Carson Palmer 3+ times snd intercepts a pass for a td? Worrying about a point or 2 is going to make you feel foolish if the score is like 33-10. I got it from 5.5 to 7 and I couldn't care less. If it moved to Denver -10, I'd still be on it. I've seemed to always win when I bet a team where the line has moved against me. People who pass on games like this, IMO, are scared little chickens and cheap. Denver should demolish them tonight. Who the hell cares what the line is. Denver beat the San Diego Chargers the most improved team in the league with the best running back. Why cant they beat the Bengals?
