WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 (AP) - The ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee said today that he would vote to confirm Judge John G. Roberts Jr. as the 17th chief justice of the United States, having concluded that the nominee is "a man of integrity" who is not shackled to an "ideological agenda."

Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont announced his intention on the Senate floor, less than 24 hours after the Democratic minority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, said he would vote against Judge Roberts. Mr. Leahy's support diminished what little suspense remains over Judge Roberts's prospects.

"breaking ranks" - not blindly following the orders of the party.

What a unique concept. My guess is that if Bush's numbers stay low, we'll see more of this from the repubs in '06 as they run for re-election and try to pass themselves off as "not afraid to stand up to anyone"

KTV thats bullshit ole buddy...John "Fraud' Kerry for one is voting against Roberts. (The dumb ass actually thinks that this will help him to the presidency.

And for the record Ruth beta (not vhs) Ginsburg was confirmed by 96% of the senate and she is left of Karl Marx and an ex aclu member.

Pat,

I thought by stating it was a "unique" concept that you would have understood I wasn't saying everyone was doing it.

Why do we bother having votes if both parties are expected to rubber stamp these judges? If its agreed that whatever the sitting prez decides is the choice, then why waste time with the circus?

Thats not the surprise, the surprise is about 40 pubs voted for un- Babe ruth (Sultan of the Swap).

Pubbies were much more reasonable voting for a clinton communist than the dems have been for voting against one of the smartest law minds in the land.

What did you mean then when you said they'd never Borked a nominee?

I've had to ask this too many times to count, are you a moron? Clinton sought Orin Hatch's advice on the Ginsberg nomination. Hatch indicated that a Ginsberg nomination would not be met with republican resistence (whereas as a Bruce Babbitt nomination would). Based on Hatch's advice, Clinton put forth a nominee that would insure there would be no fight.

Whatever your source for (mis)information is, get rid of it.

Ginsberg was a lawyer for the ACLU. So since Judge Roberts once represented a gay rights group, that would make him an ex homosexual, correct?

... and what so wrong with civil liberties?

Geez, KT...the low numbers could really hurt Bush's shot at a third term, huh?

The Dems are going to sweep in '06 and '08 just like they did in '02 and '04, right? I heard the same chest-thumping boasts then, too.

Americans may dislike events, but they've shown a real preference in voting GOP. The Democratic Party is done in its current form. Its nothing more than a flaccid, vacant collection of mouthpieces that automatically parrot anti-Bush rhetoric instead of coming up with their own ideas or alternatives. Merely spewing "It's Bush's fault, elect us!" obviously isn't enough. The Left is a party without ideas, values, or a future. For all its shortcomings, the GOP at least has discernable positions on issues.

A good chunk of the Left sees a positive benefit in bad news from Iraq because they perceive that as hurting Bush, and hurting Bush is more important to them than winning the war. Therefore, libbies get wood over an anti-Bush article, and take delight in the government's difficulties.

"A whole company of Marines was killed? Oh, thank goodness! That'll really hurt Bush! He's done for now!"

The GOP's anti-Clinton agenda looks like a man-crush compared to the blind hatred that consumes you pathetic dunces. Tell me again how the Hurricane started because Bush didn't sign the Kyoto treaty while Clinton was president...?

And I don't even particularly like Bush. I merely support his administration's foreign policy.

Between you, redneckman and RightWing you seem to know exactly what the folks on the left think. Almost every reply you post involves a "man crush" or men getting wood over issue....an interesting theme.

The fact that you obviously haven't even read my other posts would explain why you keep thinking that I vote democrat.

For a clown that hides behind a gay british sounding cartoon as an avatar, I'd at least expect some wit.

As far as the low numbers hurting Bush, of course they won't Jdunce ---- however history has proven that an unpopular president is an anchor during mid-terms so it become vogue to purposely tout differences.

Sorry I had to explain - I'll use smaller words next time.

Hey - more advice from the guy who can't sit through a 30 min speech.

Where is your advice to Jdeuce and the others who go off on personal attacks? While I may come across as angry, rest assured I'm quite composed and deliberate in my comments.

Accusing one side (regardless of which side) of celebrating the deaths of marines? Where is your advice for those who spew that kind of garbage? Oh I forgot - you are more concerned with the fact that I've lived in more than 1 country and you get to ice fish in November.

Oh no the lakes aren't frozen over until December and I will grab my snoopy pole and pull a lunker out of any lake with the best of them.

I'm just saying you have a lot of anger and my advice is just ignore someone if their getting to you instead of ripping off some personal attack like your better than them because you come off with this low self esteem I'm going to try to make this person look less superior to yourself.
