With the addition of table games apparently coming to Delaware this could really hurt Atlantic City. Is there any way they could offer sport betting?

I went to grab the Offshore forum thread telling how the Delaware House defeated the measure, but then I see it succeeded on the ol' Second Try vote

House OKs retooled sports betting plan

A reworked sports betting bill passed the Delaware House of Representatives early Friday, greatly improving the odds that the First State will become the only state east of the Mississippi to allow legal gambling on sporting events.

An earlier version of the bill that would have authorized sports betting fell two votes short of a needed three-fifths majority on Tuesday. But the proposal, backed by Gov. Jack Markell as a means to address the state's fiscal crisis, was amended to address some concerns of the state's three racetrack/casinos.

"My administration worked with the leadership in the house and senate to get this done," Markell said in a prepared statement. "We never stopped fighting to do what was right for the taxpayers of Delaware."

Under the new proposal, the racetrack/casinos will eventually be allowed to conduct table games -- currently, only slot machines and other electronic gaming are allowed -- and will see a larger share of sports betting revenues than what was initially proposed.

The reworked bill passed the House 30-4. It still requires passage in the state Senate and Markell's signature to become law.

Markell said the current proposal bill will bring in an estimated $52 million in fiscal 2010, but added that could increase if table games are running by early next year, according to The News Journal of Wilmington. Markell is already proposing an 8 percent wage decrease for state workers as Delaware deals with budget woes.

Major sports leagues and the NCAA have opposed the proposal.
Delaware, which briefly experimented with a sports lottery in the 1970s, is one of four states grandfathered under a 1992 law that bars states from establishing legal sports betting. Montana, Oregon and Nevada are the others.

They best put it out for bid and get a guaranteed income.

I dont think that the state leg would understand the nature of the fluxuateing income from a sports book if the chose to run it themselves.

i'm pretty certain that what delaware will offer will be a lottery game, something similar to a parlay ticket. Don't think you will be seeing sports books, you'll just buy the ticket at a lottery outlet.

As to the question about whether Jersey can start offering sports betting, most around here already know the answer. for those who don't:

in the early 90s congress passed a crime bill that banned sports betting, except in those states that already had it or had already authorized it. Those states were Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana.

New Jersey, under this law, was given 2 yrs to decide whether it wanted sports betting. If it took no action during those 2 yrs., and it didn't, then sports betting would be banned there just as it was elsewhere.

Recently, I believe, a state sen. in Jersey has gone to federal court in an effort to get this overturned. It will take many months, probably some years, for this to play out. Many legal experts think the law was not well written and will eventually be overturned.

i hope it doesnt get passed. this is an issue im conservative on, like most issues which would be a surprise to some here.

this forum is the perfect example with the miamiboy86's, and now the case in the main forum. these people dont deserve the right to choose how they spend money if they just ruin everybody elses life.

plus sports are already fixed anyways like most of this forum assumes. how desperate do you have to be to bet on something predetermined.

screams of get rich quick, low resistance, weak people.

allow me to amend my previous post. AFter reading the story today about the governor signing the bill, it is still unclear whether it will be parlay betting, or betting on individual events. I would assume the latter would be what the racinos would want, and could lead to honest to god sportsbooks. But it is still up in the air. Just as important is the addition of table games to the racinos, which now basically have just slots...
