Swinney and his agent, Mike Brown, had a meeting with athletic director Terry Don Phillips to begin discussing a contract on Sunday.
Sports information director Tim Bourret said Sunday he has been told not to attend Clemson's basketball game at Illinois on Tuesday and is "on call" should a news conference be needed.
Swinney took over as interim coach after Tommy Bowden resigned on Oct. 13. Clemson, 3-3 at that point, finished 7-5. The Tigers ended the season with decisive victories over Duke (31-7), Virginia (13-3) and, on Saturday, archrival South Carolina (31-14). The players carried Swinney off field on their shoulders after the victory over the Gamecocks.
Swinney, who turned 40 earlier this month, has been at Clemson for six seasons. A former walk-on at Alabama, Swinney earned a scholarship and lettered three years (1990-92). He spent the next eight years as a graduate assistant and full-time assistant at his alma mater.
When Alabama fired coach Mike DuBose and his staff in 2000, Swinney stayed out of football for three years.
