Swinney and his agent, Mike Brown, had a meeting with athletic director Terry Don Phillips to begin discussing a contract on Sunday.
Sports information director Tim Bourret said Sunday he has been told not to attend Clemson's basketball game at Illinois on Tuesday and is "on call" should a news conference be needed.

Swinney took over as interim coach after Tommy Bowden resigned on Oct. 13. Clemson, 3-3 at that point, finished 7-5. The Tigers ended the season with decisive victories over Duke (31-7), Virginia (13-3) and, on Saturday, archrival South Carolina (31-14). The players carried Swinney off field on their shoulders after the victory over the Gamecocks.
Swinney, who turned 40 earlier this month, has been at Clemson for six seasons. A former walk-on at Alabama, Swinney earned a scholarship and lettered three years (1990-92). He spent the next eight years as a graduate assistant and full-time assistant at his alma mater.
When Alabama fired coach Mike DuBose and his staff in 2000, Swinney stayed out of football for three years.

imo there is no way a major BCS conference school should offer the head coaching position as "on the job training". Lean years ahead for the tigers

Very funny, Rolltide. This is exactly how Danny Ford was hired, and he proved to be the greatest thing since the Bear himself.

I feel sorry for the Clemson folks... Look how terrible hiring Bill Stewart worked out for WVU.

Or Bill Lynch for Indiana.

When has an interim coach becoming a head coach ever worked out?

I remember Bobby Williams for MSU, worked out terribly. Central Mich didn't hire their interim coach, and they've been in the MAC championship the last 2 years and tons of wins.

I went to graduate school with dabo-he was definitely the on the quiet side in everyday life-hard for me to picture him as an energetic, in your face coach for a major college football program-nevertheless,good luck to him

There has been several interim head coaches that went on the successful careers (and assistants who succeeded the departing/retiring head coach):

Phil Fulmer
Whittingham (Utah)
Ford
Galen Hall

Several busts:

Coker (minus the National Championship the first season)
Randy Shannon
Bobby Williams
Ray Goof

Personally, I'm not sure this was a good hire for Clemson. If they wanted to "go in a new direction" it doesn't seem logical to hire an assistant off the current staff that "wasn't getting it done".....

Seems like he's a good person, however....

Don't forget Bill Stewart as a failure! Coach Rod had us set up for a top 10 year in and year out program, but STEW-pid has sent all of that crashing down in just one year.
