I don't think Favre has handled the situation very well but he's getting ripped too much.
I feel that Thompson has been passive / aggressive trying to get rid of him from day one without angering the fans. I think that's part of why Favre has been reluctant to decide what to do the last few years. Favre was tight with Mike Sherman so I think that was issue one. Favre has no interest in staying in Green Bay over the summer to help Rodgers these last years. I think that pissed Thompson off.
I think that retiring Favre's jersey in the 1st regular season game was sending a signal too. The signal was don't even think about coming back. I bet the first game works great (NOT EVEN IF RODGERS GETS HURT -- YOU'RE NOT COMING BACK)
Packer President / CEO Mark Murphy told ESPN "Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and I looked at the entire schedule and felt the first game would be an ideal time to have the event. I spoke with Brett, as did Ted and Mike, about which game to choose. Ultimately, through our communications, we decided the first game would work great."
This reminds me alot of Bill Belichek running off Bernie Kosar in Cleveland. Belichek never wanted Kosar as his starter and tried to get rid of him at every turn. He couldn't outright do it in the beginning though because Browns fans would turn on the organization too much. The organization didn't respect that many of us Browns fans (myself included) would have rather lost with our favorite player at the helm then start the new era. I still can't stand Belichek to this day.... Most Packer fans want to watch Favre finish his career under any circumstances and the team just doesn't get it.
I think McCarthy has just been trying to keep the peace this whole time. Thompson is playing a very dangerous game here and if they go through with this -- and 2008 is a non Super Bowl year -- they'll run Thompson outta there in a hurry. By trying to hand the job to Rodgers - Thompson is putting him under more pressure than any QB in the NFL. That's not a good situation. Replacing a legend is no fun when they retire on their own terms but this would be a nightmare.
