Xander Schauffele: Round 1 Under 71.5 Strokes

Xander Schauffele has developed into one of the best golfers on the tour and is my favorite pick of the day. Schauffele has shot under 70.5 in the first round in 14 of his last 15 tournaments —— currently, the 10th-ranked golfer in the world, Schauffele’s metrics suggest he is set up for a good run at a green jacket this year. This season, Schauffele ranks 38th on TOUR in SG Approach the Green, 49th in SG Around the Green, 16th in SG Tee to Green, and 36th in Scrambling.

Starting strong on a big stage has not scared Schauffele in his young career as he has gone under this first-round total in five of his last eight major championships. The fact that this number isn’t 70.5 is a little puzzling to me, but I’m not going to complain and will just ride it to some early winnings for the Masters.

Joaquin Niemann Round 1 Leader (+5500)

There are a great many factors that point to “The Wonder Kid” having an excellent week at the Masters this week. One of the more notable reasons is his success at Riviera Country Club, where he won just a few months ago. Plenty of golfers have had success at Riviera as well as Masters and there seems to be a strong correlation between the two. Nineteen golfers have won at both Riviera and Augusta National.

Niemann hits the ball long and straight off the tee, and his distance should prove to be a major advantage this weekend, especially this year when the course will likely be playing even longer than usual with the changes to holes 11 and 15.

His win at The Genesis Invitational was probably the most impressive victory for any player this season considering the strength of the field and his relative inexperience, so he should be brimming with confidence. The only concern for me with Niemann is how he will react to playing his first round with Tiger Woods and the pressure that undeniably will accompany that —— but I’m going to take a swing in this spot despite that.
