Curious to know......I had my hard drive crash about a month ago......had to reload everything as the disk was unrepairable.....

A friend of mine who is rather sharp with computers rebuilt it for me and put all the bells and whistles back into it.....actually he was an old roommate of mine who knew I gambled and used it mostly for email and gambling purposes.....While he spent around three hours putting my computer together I had the pleasure of using one of his computers on my usual Sunday of watching scores and games and picking off a few halftime numbers as they came up.....

I did fairly well that Sunday as far as gambling goes.....wouldn't have had that same opportunity had I been sitting around the tv wondering what numbers I would be facing on a dead computer that I couldn't bet on...

We've helped each other out with things in the past.....so it's not like he was just giving me something without getting anything in return.......I'm better with glue and screws and a welder and have fixed some of the things he has broken.......

I still have a key to his house, and the next day I left a 16 pound smoked turkey and three cases of Bud to wash it down.......worth about $85......think it was worth at least that...and considering he got on it right away and I didn't have to wait a week or two and made some $$$ on it gambling that same day....

Curious to know what a computer tech in my neighborhood (Nebraska) would have charged me for about 3 or 3.5 hours of labor to rebuild that drive????

I'm thinking I'd have been charged about $50 an hour? Anybody have a guess?

$50 an hour is on the low end

Basic, no network, home computer stuff.....$50-100/hr
Corporate network, server side $75-150/hr

Local computer geek built one of my computers

Hardware - MFG warranty and his labor is free for that period
Software problems - email is free - house calls are $50/hr

Although the computer he built is great I probably won't go that way again even with though the initial cost was $800 dollars less than BestBuy.

I caught a virus/worm/bug that would not let me login. Windows would start and just shut down. There was no restore disc. Took him about four hours to re-initialize everything. But it was a three day wait for him to show up.

I charge 50 an hour if the call is within 5 miles of me. 1.00 per mile thereafter.

Buisnesses I charge 75.00 an hour.

Seems like you gave him a fair deal. Afterall hes your buddy.

Is it really hard to get cisco certified? I heard it was. The test for the top level is really tough. You put together a network then they screw it all up and you have only 24 hours to fix everything or something. Am I way off base here?

Rob - the CCNA isnt that hard to get, but you better know your shit with TCP/IP and routers.

the next cert Im gonna try to achieve is the CCNP which involves alot with layer 2/3 switches...its difficult.

the test your talking about is the CCIE. There are only 1500 CCIEs in the WORLD...in fact, there are only 2 in my state of Ohio. Few years ago, Cisco would offer you a job ON THE SPOT if you passed it. CCIE is almost a guranteed 6 figure job. Your right though....its a 3 day test...you do the written portion on day 1....you setup a huge network in a room on day 2...the graders come and fuck the network up and on Day 3 you have to figure out the problem and fix it

The test cost $3000...I have a feeling that Im gonna be droping about a grand before I pass my CCNP (im sure I`ll fail a bunch of times)

Cisco cert is better then any Microsoft, Linux, Novell, IBM, HP, Dell bullshit certs...my MCSE didnt get me anywhere...it was my CCNA that got me a job

The certification is not hard. It's knowing what your doing in the real world. You could be good with the books, but when face the real world it's a different story. Normally, you start at the bottom and work your way up (as in most jobs). I received my certification a few months back and still, when I come home from work, I work with my routers and switches to get additional experience. Yet, to say the least. The certification is only valid for 3 years.

The test should not be 3 grand.. Maybe you are thinking of the course.

The test should be around 100 bucks.
