Make sure you have a surge protector and the computer is running off an APC so it won't die if you lose power.

I have started shutting down during lightning storms because even with a surge protector, I have had issues. It is just not worth the risk.

That system moved through Southeastern Michigan last night with a few power outages and downed trees. Even some 100 mph guts in Flint so hope it passes quickly Journeyman. Good Luck.

All is quiet on the western front, I think I made it through....except for a yard full of branches to clean up.

We had that storm yesterday afternoon. Tornado was 10 miles south. Lost power for 16 hours. I would turn off computer during storm and unplug from wall to avoid power surges.

Good idea, it's just not worth it.

Also, be sure to get a surge protector that your DSL or cable goes through. I had a machine get fried a couple of years ago & it wasn't even turned on. Right through the cable modem (which also fried) & into the computer. Luckily, my tv was spared.

I'm sure it could damage the comp but I'm not going to shut it off. I'll roll the dice. Power has gone out plenty of times when I'm on it. What are the odds of lightening hitting my house.

VT, when mine got smoked by lightning, the actual strike was about a mile away.

Never underestimate the value of those backups!!

ONE MAJOR thing to do if you are going to turn off your computer is to disconnect the surge protector from the wall. No reason AT ALL to have that plugged into the wall if your computer is off
