It's never too early to predict next season's top teams.

So your bracket is shot, your favorite team is out of the tournament and the Big Dance is as played out as a Capital One commercial. Don't worry, I have the cure for your March Madness hangover. With college football teams holding spring practices around the country and the start of the season only five months away, it's never too early to predict who the top 16 teams will be this season.

1. USC -- This choice is as predictable as a Paris Hilton joke during a Tonight Show monologue. The back-to-back national champions and winners of 22 straight probably could beat a few NFL squads next season, and that's not a stretch considering about a dozen starters will be playing on Sundays after next season.

2. Tennessee -- The Vols' offense should be running like Clockwork Orange come fall with the return of quarterback Erik Ainge, who threw for a Tennessee-freshman record 17 touchdowns and led the team to a 7-1 record before injuring his right shoulder. With Ainge throwing up Peyton Manning-like numbers and tailback Gerald Riggs Jr. on the verge of a monster season, coach Phil Fulmer might be holding up his second national title with an offense that would be second to none during his time in Knoxville.

3. Texas -- Putting Texas near the top of your annual preseason rankings is like predicting Martin Scorsese will win Best Director in your annual Oscar pool. On pure talent and prestige alone, you'd be a fool not to do it, but in the end you're always wrong. Unlike Scorsese, however, this year maybe different for the Longhorns. If Vince Young can use his arm as effectively as his legs, the Longhorns, who return 16 starters from last year's Rose Bowl-winning squad, easily could make a return trip to Pasadena.

4. Iowa -- Quarterback Drew Tate is the leader, but the team's success will depend on the health of Iowa's tailbacks. Last season the Hawkeyes' backfield had to recover from more losses than the cast of ER. Nearly every runner on their roster was injured, making Iowa a one-dimensional team. That won't be the case this season, as a healthy Sam Brownlee and Albert Young will vie for carries and take the workload off of Tate.

5. Oklahoma -- The Sooners were decimated with departures, and the biggest loss will be quarterback Jason White (What? He couldn't get a seventh year of eligibility?). Rhett Bomar should do fine in his place and if the redshirt freshman can have half as good a season as his recruiting classmate Adrian Peterson did last season, Oklahoma might actually make it to the national title game and win it.

6. Florida -- There's a reason why Urban Meyer turned down his "dream job" at Notre Dame, and it's not just because UF is located in Gainesville and not South Bend. The Gators are loaded and ready to win now. With stud quarterback Chris Leak leading Meyer's "fast-break" offense, the Gators should once again be one of the highest-scoring teams in the nation.

7. LSU -- Les Miles inherits a talented roster from Nick Saban, whose recruiting classes were ranked in the top 10 the past four years. The Tigers' newest recruit, however, might make the biggest splash. If hotshot freshman quarterback Ryan Perrilloux can live up to the hype he's garnered in the Bayou and utilize one of the most athletic receiving corps in the country, LSU could return to its championship form of two years ago.

8. Michigan -- Outside of Los Angeles, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better QB-RB-WR trio than Chad Henne, Michael Hart and Steve Breaston. That said, even if the Wolverines field one of the most explosive offenses in the country, it won't matter if the defense implodes like it did at the end of last season.

9. Ohio State -- The Buckeyes should have one of the best defenses and easily the best linebacking corps in the nation with the return of nine starters, including linebackers Bobby Carpenter, A.J. Hawk and Anthony Schlegel. Ohio State needs to find some consistency on offense and a replacement for kicker Mike Nugent, which will be easier said than done.

10. Auburn -- After a magical undefeated season, the Tigers will return to the real world after the losses of most of their major stars, including tailbacks Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown. Auburn won't fall that hard, however, as it returns six starters from one if the best defenses in the country.

11. Louisville -- With quarterback Brian Brohm guiding an impressive aerial attack and tailbacks Michael Bush and Eric Shelton carrying the load on the ground, the Cardinals should make a smooth transition into the Big East. In fact, look for Louisville to win the conference and play in a BCS game.

12. Arizona State -- Off-the-field controversy aside, the Sun Devils are primed at giving USC a run for the Pac-10 title. With Sam Keller running the offense and All-American receiver Derek Hagan catching everything in sight, Dirk Koetter could field his highest-scoring offensive side since his days tearing up the blue turf at Boise State.

13. Virginia Tech -- Much of this team's success hinges on the play of quarterback Marcus Vick. No one's expecting him to play like Michael, but if he can step up and be half the player and leader his brother was in Blacksburg, the Hokies should be the favorite to win the ACC.

14. Miami -- This pick has more to do with history than current talent, because there are more question marks surrounding the 'Canes than Matthew Lesko's jacket. Aside from the quarterback battle between Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman, Miami needs to find a replacement for tailback Frank Gore.

15. Florida State -- Another prestige pick. The Seminoles' offense has been a shell of its former self since the departure of Mark Richt to Georgia, and things won't get better until the 'Noles settle on quarterback (likely Wyatt Sexton) and get a consistent running game.

16. Texas A&M -- This could be the season Dennis Franchione's squad finally takes shape. With quarterback Reggie McNeal running wild on helpless defenses and eight starters returning from an Aggies defense that was reaching Wrecking Crew status last year, A&M could be a top-10 team after its first nine games. But closing out the season against Oklahoma and Texas will prevent them from dreaming of anything better than a Holiday Bowl trip.

While USC is #1, they'd get SMOKED by ANY NFL team...

The gap between the pros and college is as wide as the Grand Canyon.

#15 - FSU. I agree it's a "prestige pick". If they beat Miami, I guess it's warranted. They are going to struggle on O against good defenses.

Boise State should have made the list with all they are returning (after going 12-1 last year, barely losing to Louisville)..... If Boise St beats Georgia they should finish undefeated (regular season) again.

It's amazing how everyone still hates on Boise St. BSU I believe has finished in the Top 12 in the final rankings the past 3 years. Dan Hawkins is an excellent coach and Jared Zebransky now has another year under his system. I believe come September 3rd people might finally believe in them after they give Georgia a helluva game. Btw, gambling wise WAC football is god's gift to man. Ridiculously easy to cap. I still can't believe I got Tulsa +21 last year against Boise in Tulsa. That was sick. Game won me a lot of money and woulda won me more if Tulsa coulda held on for the win (15-1 dog).

Ohio St. is fine where they are.....Ginn is not very proven, looks to be very inaccurate. However, I cannot wait until the Vince Young bandwagons careens into a tree and everyone is trying to jump off and there's panic everywhere. For God's sakes people, no one remembers the Kansas game. OR any other game where Vince Young was wildly inaccurate as he tends to be. He's a great runner, but unless I'm an Option team, I need a QB that can throw the ball as well. Texas will go 9-3 this year, book it.

Hines, you are right about Texas and one loss will be from OHio State, but how can you say that about GINN. Come on Ginn has proven himself in many games. What did he have maybe one mediocre game? No one is perfect. With Ginn and Smith Ohio State will be contending for the national championship!!!

Young completed 63% of his passes after the Missouri game, which is really where he turned the corner last season (passing). That was when the coaching staff showed him a highlight reel of his own plays to get his confidence back up (b/c everyone berrades him about his mechanics). I mean do you not remember the Oklahoma State (18-21) or Texas Tech games? And that was with a sub-par receiving cops. On the year, as a SOPHMORE he threw 59% (including some bumpy early passing games), which is better than any UT starter as a SOPHMORE from recent years (Simms, Applewhite) and a just a tad worse than beloved Chad Henne (61%). You already know Young can run and alter a game w/ his capabilities at that. This year, Quan Crosby (huge prospect who played in the minor leages for a few years and was recruited a few years back) and Jordan Shipley (great hands), along w/ returners David Thomas, Limus Sweed, and Nate Jones will really help him complete some of those tougher passes as they now have much more experience.

You will be very suprised with Selvin Young. No one really knows him, but he will fill in the TB spot with Romonce Taylor rotating nicely to take pressure off of Young. RB has never been a problem at UT, as we have so much talent for that position. Check your Steele's book..

You're an idiot to say Horns will lose 3 games. I'll give you Ohio State is a toss-up. However, which Buckeye QB will even start that game? Thats actually a big question to answer. And what about all this off-field trouble, is it all in the past or is more trouble coming?

OU goes down this year. Texas will have a scare at Missouri, yall aren't even mentioning that game, which most worries me b/c of where it lies in the schedule and thats a long distance to travel as well as other psychological factors (you mentioned Kansas, case in point). Brown may not know what to do w/ Stoops, but has Franchione's # therefore we will take down A&M on the road, plus they are still re-building their program.

Mjlomb,

oh, I remember Selvin Young...they honestly won't have much of a drop off from Benson last year with him coming back (assuming he's fully healthy)...used to bet them all the time a couple of years ago with big spreads (which is something I don't usually do)...they'd pull Benson and put him in there and he'd kick butt...thanks for the Texas info...

The Texas pick may be a bit high considering they go to Ohio St and UT also lost several coaches off the defensive side as well as an all world LB. They still cannot beat OU and A&M is gaining as they bring everyone back.

I'm and ASU alum and I'm telling you ASU is way overrated. I'll be in Baton Rouge for the Sept10 game but they also have N'Western after that and I have NW as one of my improved teams coming into this year. There is no way they (ASU) can challenge USC, not in the foreseable future. This is probably DK last year in Tempe.

Surprised VT and L'Ville not listed in the top 7 or so. Both those teams have very favorable schedules and are loaded on both sides of the ball.

Mjllomb - Other than Chizik having a nice couple of years at Auburn where the SEC was noticeably weak and a stint at Centra Florida, what else has he done? I am more excited about Duane Akina as co-defensive coordinator with the loss of Greg Robinson. And despite what they do on offense, they still have Greg Davis calling plays on Offense and he'll never put them in position to win a close game. It's just my opinion as I am by no means an insider down on the 40Acres, but I know a lot of coaches from my recruiting/talent evaluation associations and I use the info that I get from them to help me form opinions. Their staff with the turnover is still no where close to the Oklahoma staff, nor the staff that has been built in College Station. Realize that the assistants that coach Fran has have been with him since his TCU years. The Stoops staff is just deep. They are one of the few staffs that cross-train coaches (each coach has a backup that is responsible for a specific position). It's an awesome system. PC at USC does the same thing. This allows them to reload staffs instead of rebuilding.
I wish them the best because as a Texan, UT and A&M are the Bell Cow programs of our state and the perception of football in Texas often is based on how these two teams play.
