UNT's Cobbs leads nation
He's the nation's leading rusher. His team has a 16-game conference winning streak that is the longest in the country and will probably finish the season with a bowl game in New Orleans.
Yet, few people even know his name or about his team.

Meet Patrick Cobbs, the 5-foot-9, 189-pound junior from North Texas, which has already clinched a share of its third straight Sun Belt Conference title.

Cobbs has run for 1,126 yards and a school-record 13 touchdowns, even while missing two games and parts of two others because of a bruised thigh. His 140.8 yards-per-game average is best in NCAA Division I-A, ahead of Michigan's Chris Perry (131.3) and Northern Illinois' Michael Turner (130.5).

"From day one, we knew we had a good player," North Texas coach Darrell Dickey said. "As a true freshman, it came down to almost a coin flip whether to start Kevin Galbreath or Patrick Cobbs. It was neck and neck."

Galbreath got the edge two years ago because of experience, and responded with the only consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in school history, with Cobbs pushing him the whole time. Cobbs had 1,160 yards and 11 TDs as a backup. This year, he has a school-record streak of six straight 100-yard games with a pair of 200-yard games.

SMU's futility: SMU has had some awful years since coming off the death penalty. Never, though, have the Mustangs been 0-10.

Still, second-year coach Phil Bennett remains confident in his plan to rebuild a program that hasn't been the same since their once-powerful program came to a stunning halt.

"Not winning is disappointing," said Bennett, who is 3-19 with the Mustangs. "But I am not discouraged. We will get there."

Boosters have heard the same thing from predecessors Mike Cavan and Tom Rossley, and have yet to see results. SMU has had just one winning season in the last 15, and that was six years ago.

All fans are asking for is progress.

"I expected some rebuilding this year and we're not doing that," said Ryan Phillips, a 1991 graduate and real-estate investor. "If Coach Bennett doesn't perform well next year there should be some questions being asked about what is going on. We need some tangible evidence of improvement."

With games left against Rice (2-7) and No. 10 TCU, SMU already has tied the school record for losses. At least the 1990, '91 and '95 teams also mixed in a single victory. The Mustangs' only winless season was 1960, when they were 0-9-1.

SMU has been outscored 325-101 and is on a 10-game losing streak. Only a 12-game skid by Army is longer among Division I-A schools.

Terps, Cavs jockey for berths: They opened the season with two losses, stumbled in a 7-3 loss to Georgia Tech and haven't been in the Top 25 since August.

And yet, the Maryland Terrapins are still in position to earn a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference title and play in a bowl game on New Year's Day.

"The way this ACC is playing out, anybody can end up anywhere," Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said. "We're not out of winning the ACC, but we've got to win Thursday night."

The Terrapins (6-3, 3-2) must beat Virginia (5-4, 3-3) to remain in contention for the ACC crown. If first-place Florida State clinches the title with a win over North Carolina State on Saturday, Maryland can still finish second by winning its final three games.

Problem is, Friedgen has no idea which Maryland team will show up Thursday night.

Will it be the one that showed flashes of brilliance in wins over West Virginia and Clemson? Or the one that appeared lethargic and uninterested in losses to Northern Illinois and Georgia Tech?
