It was said about Bear Bryant "he could take yours and beat his." Some coaches have
a gift/skill of taking lesser talent and then develop them into winning football teams year
after year.

Here's a list of coaches who do more with less.

1. Bill Snyder - Kansas State. Snyder was only 6-7 this season but has had 9-4, 8-5,
11-2 and 10-3 the past 4 years.

2. Gary Patterson - TCU. Patterson was 11-2 this year and 12-1 last year. During 2010
he led the Frogs to an undefeated season (13-0).

3. Mark Dantonio - Michigan State. The man has gone 36-5 the past 3 years.

4. David Cutcliffe - Duke. Cutcliffe has had opportunities to leave Duke but likes the
school and decided to stay. He won 10 games during the 2013 season and 27-19 past
three seasons.

5. Dan Mullen - Mississippi State. Five straight winning seasons including 9-4 this
year. Pretty strong for a school with Miss State's past history.

I'm sure there are others and you may disagree with some I have listed. Welcome
your comments.

Can't really disagree with these.... Chris Peterson has always been one of the best in my opinion. Regardless of what conference he coached in he dominated at Boise and beat some big teams along the way with a relatively weak roster every year.... He's already started that process at Washington with a freshman QB and a defense that lost 3-4 major players..... This year they were statistically the best pac 12 scoring defense with a bunch of young dudes.... Look out. Hate saying that but he scares me when it comes to the next few years and those border wars with Oregon.

Quack, totally agree about Chris Peterson because of his body of work at Boise State.

During his 8 seasons at Boise: 8-5, 11-2, 12-1, 12-1, 14-0, 12-1, 10-3, 13-0......

Pretty damn strong!

I can't speak for the other coaches, but Patterson and Snyder's success has a lot to do with their coaching staffs. Snyder has some longtime assistants and has used the same method of recruiting to the same system for many years. And to his credit, he has stuck with the same system through thick and thin. Which not very many coaches do. Patterson is one of the best defensive minds out there. But he was 6-6, 4-8 in the Big 12 until he finally went out and hired some coaches who knew how to run the HUNU offense. Assistant coaches are just as important to a team's success as the HC. Whittingham also has also struggled in the Pac-12 with a couple of 5-7 seasons until he found the right mix of assistants in 2014 and found success.

Dan should give Dak Prescott half of his salary, because he was only that good because of Dak.

Prescott was not heavily recruited out of high school as a quarterback. He was either rated a 2star
or 3star.

Thinking credit has to go to the coach who recruited him and coached him into a winning SEC QB.

never been a big fan of Snyder populating his squad with local JUCO talent thereby ensuring that, overall, he has a much more experienced team than the opponent. To me that's just not a sustainable way to be successful and really there is no freshman recruiting program in place for his successor. When he leaves they will be back to the mid-80's Kansas State as the relationships between Snyder and JUCO coaches will be gone

other names are pretty solid although I'm not a big fan of Mullen and, especially, his play calling. and his state rival has done what he's been unable to achieve on the recruiting front. Mullen's 26-30 SEC record with only one winning season in conference play isn't phenomenal either.

Mississippi State and Mullen are doing everything they can to hire LSU line coach Ed Orgeron as
the defensive coordinator. Orgeron makes $450,000 at LSU...Mullen has offered $900,000 to
make the move.

Orgeron was head coach at Ole Miss and interim head coach at USC when Lane Kiffin was fired.
I don't know what kind of DC he would be but he's one hell of a recruiter.

He would be a good DC hire, but his aspirations are to be a head coach. Would hope to lock him up for 2-3 years.

I agree and disagree with this.

Peterson took over a well oiled machine....from Dan Hawkins...who took it over from Dirk Koetter.

Koetter put Boise on the map...then Dan Hawkins took them to new heights. Peterson, the OC at the time, was then promoted to head coach.

Both Koetter & Hawkins left and were massive failures at their new - tougher - school.

I said over and over, "Why would Peterson be any different if he leaves?" (stated when everyone was salivating over him as a possibility as their teams next coach).

Well....alas.....what the FUCK has he done at his new Power 5 school? A place where EVERYONE wanted to see him?

He's 15-12 in 2 seasons....going 8-6 and 7-6. Not too impressive. The only thing that can be said is that he's had a little bit more success than Hawkins & Koetter after they left. But nothing like what ANY of them did at Boise.

Geez Coach, your a little hard on Peterson. He's only been at UW for 2 years. And they've been a mess for the last 10+ years. He took over a program who had some NFL prospects. But they were just looking to get out after Sark left. Plus he had to change the whole direction of the program. This year was definitely a rebuilding year. He only had 9 starters back. Remember the thread they started here this summer? The over/under on if UW will get to 4 wins as set by Vegas. They went 8-5 this year. I would say he did very well. And Dan Hawkins is a dumb as a doornail. Peterson was always the man behind the curtain at Boise. Just like Gary Patterson was always the man behind the curtain when Francione was head coach at TCU. He didn't do crap when he went to Texas A&M.

Well, he took over a great program at Boise and went 13-0 his first year. Everyone thought he walked on water....then he goes 8-6 and 7-6 at a "real" school?

I think he's a good coach, but I think he walked into an IDEAL situation at Boise. Let's see what he does over the next couple of years. But again, he walked into a well oiled machine at Boise. And saying Dan Hawkins was "dumb" doesn't hold much water, as Hawkins took over for Koetter (who went 10-3 and 10-2 in his last 2 seasons at Boise). So, the program was on solid ground. If anything, Peterson kept it going. He went 13-0 in year 1....so most people would say, "He won with Hawkins players". Similar situation to Larry Coker when he won the NC the year after Davis left Miami. Or on an even smaller scale, Mike London won the NC at Richmond the year after Clawson left to take the OC job at Tennessee (then took the Bowling Green head coaching job, and now at Wake Forest).....and London got the UVA job off the back of Clawson's "program" at Richmond.

I'm not saying Peterson isn't a good coach, I just think he's not as "great" as everyone thinks he is.

I might be raked over the coals for this name but I will mention Bret Bielema with both Wisconsin who isnt getting the top ranked kids to go there and won in Madison and to Arkansas where he struggled in his first year in the SEC and was getting laughed when Texas Tech beat them and probably not an easy place to recruit but he is turning this team around and won his bowl game against Kansas State.

The forum is waiting GoSooners on a rebuttal.

**Surprised no one has mentioned Kyle Whittingham at Utah.

Coach, Peterson didn't walk into the Boise job. He was already part of the program when he took over as HC. My guess is he was a BIG part of that program. Which was basically what I was getting at. You also can't measure P5 wins by WAC wins. We all know it's much harder to win at the top level. Especially in one of the best conferences in the country. And especially if you don't have easy access to the best blue chip recruits like a USC. As for Hawkins, he might have done a little better job at a program that had better leadership and was more dedicated to improving the football program. But never having a winning season in his 5 years in the easy Big 12 North was pretty pitiful by any standards. Hell, even lowly Iowa State and Kansas had several winning seasons during that span. I think Peterson will have UW on top of the Pac-12 North in the next couple of years.

Reminds me of the off season here at RX when great posters debate each other.

Notice neither "hall of famer" here at the RX CFB forum are calling each other names.

Just giving their thoughts/take on a certain topic.

(Got to believe another HOF'er Mack Donald likes this debate)
