3 keys to victory for Edmonton, Ottawa in Week 12

OTTAWA — Don’t look now, but the Edmonton Elks are coming on.

They’ll try to make it three wins in a row when they travel to TD Place for a date with the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday Night Football.

Back-to-back victories over Montreal and Toronto have the Elks pulling closer to BC and Winnipeg in the West Division.

Ottawa, on the other hand, is aiming to win three of its last four.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Friday’s 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN and RDS in Canada, and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

EDMONTON ELKS

1. JUSTIN RANKIN IS ROLLIN’

Running back Justin Rankin did it all in Week 11, pulling down 92 yards through the air and amassing 87 more on the ground in their win over Toronto. The last time these two met, a 39-33 Elks win in Week 5, he was just as effective, putting up 69 receiving and 105 rushing yards.

2. CODY FAJARDO COMING THROUGH

Quarterback Cody Fajardo is giving his team a chance to win, which is all head coach Mark Kilam can ask. He’ll face a REDBLACKS secondary that sits fifth in average passing yards against per game and one that didn’t see him the first time around. Fajardo’s ability to find his receivers and Rankin being a dual threat creates unpredictability for Ottawa’s defence.

3. KEEP IT CLOSE

The Elks’ two losses before their most recent wins were by a combined seven points. It shows they’re staying in the game and giving themselves an opportunity to come away victorious, a position they’ll look to put themselves in again on Friday.

OTTAWA REDBLACKS

1. HERE COMES DUSTIN CRUM

Starting quarterback Dru Brown is out with a knee injury, a tough blow for Ottawa’s offence. Head coach Bob Dyce will go back to Dustin Crum, who was impressive in relief against the Blue Bombers last week, completing 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

2. DANIEL ADEBOBOYE AND WILLIAM STANBACK

No Brown likely means more looks for the REDBLACKS running backs. Daniel Adeboboye and William Stanback have combined for 725 yards this season and put up 39 and 38 yards the last time these teams squared off.

3. LINEBACKERS ON GUARD

Given the Elks’ multiple threats on offence, the linebacker core — led by veterans Jovan Santos-Knox and Adarius Pickett — has to be ready to make an impact. Santos-Knox has 47 tackles, while Pickett has 63 and an interception.

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Edmonton is 1-3 on the road and Ottawa is 1-3 at home.
  • This is the final regular season meeting between the Elks and REDBLACKS.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, and can be watched on TSN and RDS in Canada, and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

3 keys to victory for BC, Toronto in Week 12

TORONTO — The BC Lions will try to make it three straight victories over East Division opponents when they take on the Toronto Argonauts at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon.

Back-to-back wins over Hamilton and Montreal have the Lions sitting at 5-5 and bearing down on the second-place Calgary Stampeders.

Toronto has dropped three straight.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Saturday’s 3:00 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN and CTV in Canada and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

BC LIONS

1. NATHAN ROURKE ON A ROLL

Nathan Rourke has been as good as they come over the last six weeks, averaging 352.2 yards per game through the air. There’s a chance he reaches the 3,000-yard mark, as he needs 314, although the Argonauts’ secondary, which ranks second in passing yards allowed, may have something to say about it.

2. THE LEGS OF JAMES BUTLER, THE HANDS OF KEON HATCHER

If head coach Buck Pierce believes in momentum and confidence, he’ll continue to turn to receiver Keon Hatcher Sr. and running back James Butler. Butler led the league entering play this week with 765 rushing yards, and Hatcher Sr. caught all 11 passes thrown his way for 156 yards and two touchdowns versus Montreal.

3. DEFENCE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The Lions had scored the most points of any team in the West Division and the third most overall with 273 after Week 11, but they’ve also allowed 272. Since the Argos have found their offensive success primarily in the pass game, watch for defensive back Ronald Kent Jr. downfield and linebacker Micah Awe patrolling the middle of the field to make a difference.

TORONTO ARGONAUTS

1. NICK ARBUCKLE AIRING IT OUT

Look up, the balls are likely to be in the air. The Argos’ first-half struggles certainly can’t be pinned on quarterback Nick Arbuckle, but any chance of the team digging their way out relies on him. Bringing 3,033 yards and 17 touchdowns into the game, don’t expect Arbuckle to back down from a Lions secondary holding opposing teams to a league-best 242.3 passing yards per game.

2. THEIR OWN SECONDARY

Was there mention of the pass games yet? The only defence that bested the Argos’ 265.6 average passing yards allowed after 11 weeks was the Lions’. Defensive back Tarvarus McFadden is tied for second in the league with three interceptions.

3. FILLING GAPS UP FRONT

Linebackers Cameron Judge and Wynton McManis should play a key role in closing gaps up front and limiting the impact of Butler. If they can get to the quarterback, which the Argos have done 22 times this season, all the better for head coach Ryan Dinwiddie’s club.

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Toronto swept the season series in 2024.
  • The two teams meet again in Week 17 in Vancouver.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET, and can be watched on TSN and CTV in Canada and on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

Weekly Predictor: Who wins on OK Tire Labour Day Weekend?

OK Tire Labour Day Weekend is here!!!

The tradition of these three rivalry games is the perfect way to kick off the race to the playoffs. We’re now just passing the midway point of the season, and I’ll say the parity in the CFL this season is the best it’s been in a while.

Some years there is a clear top dog, or dogs, and there are teams you will never pick to win because they’re going through some things.

Right now, I could see all six teams winning this weekend and make a fair case for each of them.

Sure, the Tiger-Cats may look like the easy favourite, but what Nick Arbuckle has done the last few games is similar to the work we’ve already seen from Bo Levi Mitchell.

The Riders and the Bombers always make for a game where the records of the state of the franchises don’t matter, and now the Elks are coming into Calgary on a three-game winning streak with Cody Fajardo giving the Elks a reason to believe.

Fun for the fans. Terrible for a predictor.

Let’s get at it!

WINNIPEG AT SASKATCHEWAN

Sunday, August 31
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CBSSN/CFL+

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers giving the ball to Brady Oliveira for over 200 yards against the Alouettes is the exact recipe they’ll need to win big games down the stretch.

Oh, wait, that’s been their M.O. for the last five seasons: own the line of scrimmage. And Oliveira is starting to get rolling. He now leads the league in yards from scrimmage per game, averaging over 112 yards.

I’m going to look for Oliveira to hit AT LEAST 20 touches a game from here on out.

The thing to look for this week are the injuries to Nic Demski and Jerreth Sterns as the Bombers are bringing in reinforcements. The return of Dalton Schoen is expected soon as well.

On the Riders side, they are licking their chops to get back on the field and redeem themselves after another loss at the hands of the Stampeders. The Riders responded after a Week 6 loss to the Stamps by turning a mediocre defence into the best defence in the league.

Some injuries to the secondary, including Marcus Sayles and Nelson Lokombo last week, make it intriguing to see how it shakes out. That and if they make a change at kicker after Brett Lauther missed another short field goal this past week.

I don’t see this being the 35-33 type classic we got last year, but I do think these teams are going to keep it close.

I’ll give the edge to the home side.

PICK: SASKATCHEWAN

TORONTO AT HAMILTON

Monday, September 1
2:30 p.m. ET
TSN/CBSSN/CFL+

This game is a wild card for me as the Argonauts have lost four games this season after scoring over 30 points, including that 51-38 loss to the Tiger-Cats back in Week 5.

Nick Arbuckle is playing really well right now, but the wins just aren’t adding up for the Argonauts. The Argonauts need a run game so bad. They’re last in yards per game and average a paltry 3.8 yards per carry. Defences don’t need to respect the run, which makes what Arbuckle is doing so special.

The other problem is the Argos just give up too many points on defence. Hamilton’s defence isn’t too much better, but it is slightly better. The big difference is Hamilton’s proficiency at turning over the football as they lead the league in interceptions and are second in takeaways.

The other factor I’m considering is a team coming off a bye week. The Tiger-Cats are 4-0 since Scott Milanovich took over as head coach in 2024 coming off a bye. And their offence averages 35 points a game after a bye week in those four games.

Yeah, Milanovich would have gone to school on what to do to take advantage of the Argonauts defence.

It would be a heck of a statement win for the Argos in the Labour Day Classic, but I just don’t see it happening.

PICK: HAMILTON

EDMONTON AT CALGARY

Monday, September 1
6:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CBSSN/CFL+

As I wrote earlier, Cody Fajardo has turned the Elks into a team to respect for us prognosticators. I continue to say this could be a four-game win streak if Kaion Julien-Grant holds onto the ball against Hamilton, but I digress.

The Elks definitely look like a team that no longer flinches at the first sign of adversity in a game. They have shown the toughness and willpower that has made Fajardo a successful quarterback over the last three years.

This is a whole other test for the Elks, however. The Stamps are rolling and when Vernon Adams Jr. is leading the Stampeders, they are 7-1 when he’s able to go wire-to-wire. The Elks do not get enough pressure on the quarterback, which makes defending Adams even more difficult on game day.

Oh, and Dedrick Mills is a handful to bring down.

The Stampeders defence will have two tasks on Monday, containing Fajardo and making sure Justin Rankin doesn’t take over the game. Both are not easy things to do, which is why I could make an argument to go with the Elks, but I just can’t bring myself to do it.

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…..

Eagles 24, Cowboys 20
There was an hour-long lightning delay in the third quarter.
Eagles’ DL Jalen Carter got ejected before the first play; he spit on Dallas QB Prescott, while standing right next to an official.
There were 7 possessions in first half: 5 TD’s, 2 field goals. Eagles led 21-20 at half.
Eagles in first half: 30 plays, 216 yards, 21 points.
Eagles in second half: 34 plays, 83 yards, 3 points.
Cowboys lost five of their last six visits to Philadelphia.
Last seven years, Eagles are 4-3 SU/1-6 ATS in home openers.
Dallas in first half: 32 plays, 177 yards, 20 points.
Dallas in second half: 26 plays, 136 yards, no points.
Cowboys have covered their last five road openers.
Under is 7-3 in Cowboys’ last ten season openers.

— Buffalo Bills signed K Matt Prater to their practice squad; their regular kicker, Tyler Bass, has been banged-up with a hip injury. This would be Prater’s 20th year in the NFL.

— Bill Belichick has banned New England Patriots’ staff from watching his North Carolina team practice; his disdain towards the Patriots’ organization after his departure from the team two years ago apparently hasn’t lessened any.
Scouts from other teams are limited to watching just three sessions of UNC practice, but three sessions are better than none; not sure how this will help his recruiting going forward.

— Obscure Stat of the Day:
Milwaukee P Jose Quintana faced three batters in an inning Wednesday; all three guys hit a ground ball back to Quintana, the first time that happened in a 1-2-3 inning since 2017.

— New York Mets are going all-in on young starting pitchers; they’re calling up Brandon Sproat to start Sunday’s game in Cincinnati. Sproat is 8-6, 4.24 in 25 AAA starts this season.

— Detroit Lions signed QB CJ Beathard to their practice squad, to be their #3 QB, behind Jared Goff and Kyle Allen. Beathard has started 13 NFL games, for the 49ers/Jaguars.

— 20-year-old Kendall George, the 36th overall pick in the 2023 baseball draft, has stolen 97 bases in 110 games this year- he is hitting .290 with a .406 on-base percentage. George is one of the LA Dodgers’ top minor league prospects.

— Washington Nationals VP of Amateur Scouting Danny Haas has bolted Washington for the Baltimore Orioles.

4 storylines to watch in Week 14

With a wild OK Tire Labour Day Weekend in the books, let’s look ahead to Week 14.

We have a Friday Night Football matchup between the Lions and REDBLACKS, each returning from a bye week looking to get back in the win column.

Then we strap in for three games on Saturday, with our first tripleheader of 2025 as Hamilton takes on Montreal before two Labour Day rematches, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan and Calgary and Edmonton, get underway.

To get you set for the week, here’s a storyline to follow in all four games.

KEON HATCHER SR. ON A ROLL

BC at Ottawa | Friday, September 5 | 7:30 p.m. ET | TSN/CBSSN/CFL+

Keon Hatcher Sr. and his BC Lions were on a Week 13 bye so perhaps this was swept under the rug, but in Week 12, Hatcher became the first receiver this season to pass 1,000 yards.

The six-foot-one, 212-pounder has hit that milestone in three of his five CFL seasons, most recently in 2023, where he hauled in a career-high 1,226 yards. He’s on pace to surpass that total this year, with 1,651 yards projected if he stays on his current production.

Three of his last four games have seen Hatcher go over 100 yards, including a season-high 156 in Week 11 against Montreal. The 30-year-old now sits atop all pass-catchers with 1,009 yards.

Keep an eye out for Nathan Rourke and Hatcher’s connection to continue at TD Place, when the Lions face an Ottawa pass defence that is giving up 281.8 yards per game through the air.

ALS GETTING HEALTHY

Hamilton at Montreal | Saturday, September 6 | 1:00 p.m. ET | TSN/RDS/CFL+

As the push to the playoffs begins, the Montreal Alouettes are getting healthier.

A handful of players who have been sitting on the injured list were full participants in practice this week, a good indication they’ll return to the lineup when the Als host the Tiger-Cats on Saturday. They’ll be a welcome addition as Montreal is looking to avoid a fifth straight loss.

Receivers Tyson Philpot and Austin Mack, returner James Letcher Jr., defensive lineman Mustafa Johnson, defensive back Marc Antoine-Dequoy and running back Sean Thomas Erlington were among those who were back to full action in the week of preparation ahead of their Week 14 matchup.

Quarterback Davis Alexander was limited on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will likely need a bit more time before he can return to the field.

With just two points separating the Als from the Ticats for the top of the East Division, this meeting at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium between the two teams is a critical one. Can Montreal get a win this week with the returning bodies to their roster? Find out on Saturday as the battle for the top of the division kicks off a CFL tripleheader.

IT’S TIME FOR THE BANJO BOWL

Saskatchewan at Winnipeg | Saturday, September 6 | 4:00 p.m. ET | TSN/CFL+

The first of two OK Tire Labour Day Weekend rematches begins with the Banjo Bowl on Saturday afternoon.

Winnipeg leads the all-time series between these two teams in this historic game, 13-7. The Bombers have won the last five of these contests, including last year’s 26-21 victory.

Interestingly enough, the last time the Saskatchewan Roughriders were victorious in the Banjo Bowl was back in 2018, when none other than current Bombers QB Zach Collaros was behind centre for the Green and White.

It came right down to the wire in last week’s Labour Day Classic, with the Riders holding off a furious Blue Bombers comeback for the win. Shoutout Tevaughn Campbell for his pick-two (is this what we’re calling it?) on a Winnipeg two-point conversion attempt to seal the win for his Riders.

Anything can happen in the Banjo Bowl this weekend in front of an always rowdy Winnipeg crowd. Get your popcorn ready.

THAT CALGARY DEFENCE

Calgary at Edmonton | Saturday, September 6 | 7:00 p.m. ET | TSN/CFL+

In last week’s Battle of Alberta, the Calgary Stampeders defence was relentless.

The front four, especially, put pressure on Cody Fajardo throughout the entire contest. Anyone have stats on how many yards Fajardo had to run out of and around the pocket on Monday to get himself out of trouble?

In Week 13, Folarin Orimolade tallied eight pressures, while Jaylon Hutchings had seven and Clarence Hicks had five, according to PFF. Hicks was getting on the score sheet behind the line of scrimmage, too, getting a sack and a tackle for loss. Hutchings and Orimolade each had a quarterback takedown as well.

Not only did the team make Fajardo uncomfortable, they held the Elks from scoring any touchdowns in the contest. That isn’t exactly surprising, as the Stamps have been keeping offences off the scoresheet all season long. Heading into Week 14, Calgary is holding teams to a league-low 18.0 offensive points per game.

The Elks offensive line will need to figure out how to protect Fajardo as the Stamps are itching to get back-to-back victories in the Battle of Alberta on the strength of their defence.

Prediction Time: CFL.ca writers’ Week 14 picks

TORONTO — What a week of football we were treated to.

OK Tire Labour Day Weekend had some “only in the CFL” moments, with two of the three rivalry games going right down to the wire.

That being said, there wasn’t a lot of excitement on the CFL.ca writer picks graphic, since everyone picked the same teams last week.

What did they decide to do in Week 14? Find out below.

BC AT OTTAWA

BC AT OTTAWA

Friday, September 5
7:30 p.m. ET
TSN/CBSSN/CFL+

Both the BC Lions and Ottawa REDBLACKS are coming off a bye week, each reeling from a Week 12 loss. Ottawa quarterback Dru Brown was limited to start the week of practice as he deals with a knee injury. Will he be available for Friday’s contest as the REDBLACKS try to get back in the playoff conversation? The Lions spent the week licking their wounds after giving up 52 points to the Argonauts two weeks ago, although they did score 34 themselves in the loss. Buck Pierce’s group will be hoping to bounce back with a better performance, especially defensively, in the nation’s capital. All of the pick makers are rolling with the Leos to do just that.

WRITERS’ PICK: 100% BC

HAMILTON AT MONTREAL

Saturday, September 6
1:00 p.m. ET
TSN/RDS/CFL+

Hamilton will need to put their last-second, heartbreaking loss to the Argonauts on OK Tire Labour Day Weekend behind them pretty quickly, as they head to Montreal to take on an Alouettes team that is just two points behind them in the standings. Kenny Lawler was heavily involved in the offence last week in his best game since Week 5, hauling in 123 yards and two touchdowns, one of those majors coming with 22 seconds left on the clock to put the Ticats ahead. The Als are returning from a bye week and will be well-rested as they try to keep Lawler, and the rest of the high-powered Ticats offence, from doing much of the same at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. Only Jamie Nye thinks the Als will get the W this week.

WRITERS’ PICK: 80% Hamilton

SASKATCHEWAN AT WINNIPEG

Saturday, September 6
4:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

Saskatchewan and Winnipeg’s OK Tire Labour Day Weekend matchup lived up to the hype, with a sequence inside the three-minute warning that you would have had to see to believe. The most memorable moment of the end of that contest was a Tevaughn Campbell interception in the end zone on a potential game-tying, two-point convert with 30 seconds left on the clock that he returned to seal the deal for the Riders. The Bombers will try to get their revenge this week, as Zach Collaros and co. host Saskatchewan in the Banjo Bowl at Princess Auto Stadium.

WRITERS’ PICK: 60% Saskatchewan

CALGARY AT EDMONTON

Saturday, September 6
7:00 p.m. ET
TSN/CFL+

The only game on Labour Day that wasn’t close was the Battle of Alberta. It was the Stampeders defence that dominated, putting pressure on Cody Fajardo all day long and allowing just three field goal attempts (two were good and one was missed for a single). Just like Winnipeg, Edmonton doesn’t have to wait very long to try to avenge that loss in this weekend’s Labour Day Classic rematch at Commonwealth Stadium. Can they take down the Stampeders, who have yet to lose to a West opponent? The writers don’t think so.

WRITERS’ PICK: 100% Calgary
