Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Golden State is 52-7 when Andrew Bogut plays, 9-6 when he doesn't.

-- Average major league salary will be over $4M this year for first time.

-- On top of that, ballplayers get $100.50 a day in meal money on the road.

-- Serious question: why do college football teams practice in the spring?

-- Gregg Marshall has won nine league titles in 17 years as a head coach.

-- It is supposed to be 61 in Albany tomorrow; last time it was above 50 was December 27. This is not an April Fools' joke, at least I hope it isn't.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Happy April Fools' Day!!!!

13) Cubs sent star prospect Kris Bryant to AAA, so they can keep him under team control for another year down the road; thats their choice, but don't tell me you're trying to win if you send one of your best guys to the minors, even if only for two or three weeks. How many pennant races come down to the last week or the last day of the season?

12) Mark McLemore played 19 years in the big leagues, hitting .259 with a .349 on-base percentage in 7,239 plate appearances, so he knows a lot and is now a TV analyst for the Rangers, but he claimed the Cubs sending Bryant down was "so he could work on some things", which is total BS. McLemore has kind of a condescending tone that a lot of former athletes have-- he should lose it if he wants to be good on television.

11) Does every NBA team visit the White House? The 76ers were there this week; think that practice will continue after the 2016 election?

10) Miami 60, Temple 57-- Teams combined to go 8-40 from arc in brickfest that Temple led by five at half. Miami played without PG Rodriguez for third game in a row, which will help their young players next season.

9) Stanford 67, Old Dominion 60-- Cardinal led 25-4, blew the lead, then pulled away late; ODU sub Ross was 7-7, rest of team was 14-54, with star Freeman a 6-24 disaster. Stanford-Miami is your NIT final Thursday night.

8) 7,183 fans at Madison Square Garden for that twinbill; it is funny that the media refers to MSG as the "mecca of basketball", when they had 5,583 fans in Flagstaff, Arizona for the NJIT-Northern Arizona game, and Dayton annually puts 10,000+ fans in their arena for the NCAA play-in games.

7) 35 of the 99 golfers at The Masters this week didn't go to college; of the 64 who did, six went to Georgia. No other school has more than three.

6) I'm not criticizing DePaul for re-hiring Dave Leitao, but it is ludicrous that the Blue Demons paid a search firm to find a new coach, then came back with the name of a guy who coached that same team ten years ago.
What exactly do athletic directors do? Go on the Interweb, look up names of some good teams and find out who the assistant coaches are-- its not hard!!!!

5) Turner Sports needs to promote play-by-play guy Kevin Calabro to a more prominent role; he is very, very good. Calabro was the Sonics' announcer when they played in Seattle- he does work on the Pac-12 Network and does stuff on ESPN Radio but he is so much better than most of the play-by-play guys that work hoops now.

4) Baltimore Ravens signed QB Matt Schaub to back up Joe Flacco, which is a sure sign of the QB shortage the NFL has right now.

3) San Diego hired alum Lamont Smith to replace the fired Bill Grier as its coach; Smith was a recruiter at New Mexico, won't be as good a tactician as Grier is, but he'll get better players. Toreros' brass must be tired of getting whacked by San Diego State every December, then being a middling team in a pretty good WCC. We'll see.

2) Seahawks are really going to let Russell Wilson play out his rookie contract, with chance he could eventually walk as a free agent? Why would you purposely tick off your starting QB? Wilson walked out on NC State once, he'll do it again. You don't want to go hunting for a new QB in this day and age.

1) Remember, its April Fools Day!!!! Don't believe everything you hear today, except in this space, of course.....

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

Opening Day is a big deal for MLB clubs and brings with it plenty of jitters for Big League teams, some more than others. The Oakland Athletics seem to let those season debut butterflies get the best of them, losing 10 straight games on Opening Day. Oakland kicked off last year’s campaign with a 2-0 loss to Cleveland at home.

The A’s have been outscored 50-13 in that 10-season Opening Day drought. Oakland has had the misfortune of beginning the season against the Seattle Mariners and their staff ace Felix Hernandez in half of those games, including four straight years from 2010 to 2013. This time around, Oakland opens the 2015 season at home to the Texas Rangers Monday. Can they avoid another Opening Day letdown?

Lookahead spot

The Chicago Bulls are clinging to third place in the Eastern Conference, just a game up on Toronto in the standings. The Bulls have a monster matchup ahead on the schedule this weekend, visiting LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Easter Sunday. But before then, the Bulls have a home date versus the Detroit Pistons Friday.

With the holiday weekend, the Bulls will be trying to cram in as much family time as they can around these games, which can often leave players unfocused – especially when you’re up against a non-contender like Detroit and staring down a showdown with the Cavs. The Pistons knocked off the Bulls 107-91 on March 21 and won 100-91 on February 20 with both games coming in Motown.

Schedule spot

The Washington Capitals are fighting to stay in the postseason picture, currently sitting in seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. They’re just three points ahead of No. 8 Boston and six points past Ottawa. The Capitals have a home stand against Carolina Tuesday then hit the road for a short three-game trip that could make or break their season.
Washington travels to Montreal Thursday to play the first-place Canadiens, then heads to Canada’s capital for a showdown with the Senators Saturday. The Capitals complete their 3-in-4 nights trek Sunday with a final stop in Detroit to take on a Red Wings team currently in sixth but tied with Washington at 92 points.

Game of the Day: Mavericks at Thunder
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder (-2.5, 216.5)

The Oklahoma City Thunder continue their quest for a playoff spot and they are sneaking up on seventh-place Dallas as they host the Mavericks on Wednesday. The eighth-place Thunder possess a 2 1/2-game lead over the New Orleans Pelicans for the final spot in the Western Conference but have also moved within three games of Dallas. The Mavericks have lost back-to-back contests to fall off the pace in terms of making a run at sixth-place San Antonio.

Dallas has lost four of its last five games and will again be without injured guard Monta Ellis when they challenge the Thunder. Oklahoma City rallied from 20 points down to post a 109-97 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday to post the largest comeback since the franchise moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City. The Thunder are in the midst of a 17-7 run despite not having the services of reigning MVP Kevin Durant (foot).

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), FSN Oklahoma (Oklahoma City)

LINE HISTORY: Books online opened the Thunder at -3, but got quickly bet down to -2.5. The 216.5 total has not opened since moving.

INJURY REPORT: Mavericks - G Monta Ellis (Ques-Calf), J.J. Barea (Ques-Ankle) Thunder - F Nick Collison (Out-Ankle), F Serge Ibaka (Out-Knee)

POWER RANKINGS: Mavericks (-8.6) + Thunder (-8) + Homecourt (-3) = Thunder -3.6

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (45-29 SU, 37-35-2 ATS, 35-38-1 O/U): Ellis (calf) will miss his second straight contest and a return date has yet to be pinpointed. Small forward Chandler Parsons stepped up in Sunday’s loss to Indiana with 27 points and 10 rebounds but he is prone to inconsistent efforts as he scored just nine points two nights earlier in a loss to the Spurs. “I’m not going to sit here and tell you I’m going to average 27 and 10 and be MVP but I believe in myself,” Parsons told reporters. “I think I can have big games like that, and I think I can do it more consistently when I have the opportunity.”

ABOUT THE THUNDER (42-32 SU, 32-40-2 ATS, 31-42-1 O/U): Durant underwent bone graft surgery on Tuesday to repair his fractured right foot and will be sidelined four-to-six months. He had already been ruled out for the rest of the season and the surgery is the third on the foot in five months, beginning with the first operation in October and another one to replace a troublesome screw in February. Durant played in just 27 games this season as point guard Russell Westbrook assumed the starring role and has thrived in it as he leads the NBA in scoring (27.6) and ranks fourth (8.6) in assists.

TRENDS:

*Under is 14-6 in Mavericks last 20 overall.
*Thunder are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
*Mavericks are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
*Thunder are 4-16-1 ATS in their last 21 games playing on 2 days rest.

CONSENSUS: 61.29 percent of users are backing OKC -2.5.

Raptors' PG Kyle Lowry, Out indefinitely

Lowry continues to deal with back spasms and it is unclear when he will return to action.

Greg Monroe, Detroit - Out Wed

Monroe has not played in the last eight games due to a knee injury and will not return Wednesday against the Hornets.

Pistons cashing wagers without Monroe

Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe has missed the last eight games due to a right knee strain, but the team has been a profitable venture against the spread, posting a record of 6-2 ATS in those previous eight games.

Fresh off a 105-95 win as 2-point underdogs Tuesday, the Pistons will get back at it as 4.5-point road dogs at the Charlotte Hornets Wednesday.

Monroe will sit out Wednesday's game.

Dogs come through for bettors on hardcourt Tuesday

Underdogs were the side to bet in the NBA Tuesday night, going 3-1 against the spread.

Detroit +2 versus Atlanta, Brooklyn +1 versus Indiana and Golden State +3 at the Clippers all cashed as dogs. San Antonio -8 at Miami was the only favorite to cash.

Dogs are cashing at a rate of 50.3 percent this season.

Bulls continue to go over amid low totals

The Chicago Bulls have topped the closing total in 11 of their past 14 games. Books have yet to adjust to the Bulls over habit, with the average closing total only hitting 191.9 despite a combined average of 198.4 during those games.

Chicago travels to Milwaukee with a present total of 192 Wednesday.

NBA roundup: Hot Nets get important win

NEW YORK -- Center Brook Lopez continued his dominant play of late, scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and forward Joe Johnson added 21 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the closing seconds to seal the deal, leading the Brooklyn Nets to a critical 111-106 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night at the Barclays Center.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Nets (33-40), their longest winning streak of the season, and their fifth in the last six games as they moved one-half game past idle Boston into eighth place for the final playoff spot in the NBA Eastern Conference with nine games to play.

The Pacers, who have been in a nosedive in recent weeks, lost for the eighth time in the last 10 games and fell to 32-42, 1 1/2 games behind the Nets in the standings. The Nets also now have the tiebreaker against Indiana, winning two of three games this season.

The Nets had six players register in double figures in scoring, including 20 points from guard Alan Anderson off the bench. The Pacers were led by guard George Hill, who had 28 points.

Warriors 110, Clippers 106

LOS ANGELES -- Point guard Stephen Curry scored 27 points and backcourt mate Klay Thompson added 25, guiding Golden State to a victory over Los Angeles.

Forward Blake Griffin had 40 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Clippers, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped. Point guard Chris Paul finished with 27 points and nine assists.

Forward David Lee had 17 points for the Warriors, who won their 10th in a row.The Warriors, who own the best record in the NBA, 61-13, took three of four from their in-state rival this season.

Spurs 95, Heat 81

MIAMI -- The Spurs cut their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to one by beating Miami.

San Antonio (48-26) has won four straight games while Miami (34-40) had its five-game home winning streak snapped.

The Spurs were led by small forward Kawhi Leonard (game-high 22 points, 9 rebounds), and power forward Tim Duncan (12 points, game-high 11 rebounds).

The Heat, which lost to the Spurs in last year's NBA Final, were led by point guard Goran Dragic (team-high 19 points) and shooting guard Dwyane Wade (15 points).

Pistons 105, Hawks 95

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Guard John Lucas III, who did not play in the previous eight games, scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy become the 43rd coach to get 400 NBA wins.

Lucas played because starting point guard Reggie Jackson was battling an illness and rookie reserve Spencer Dinwiddie sprained his ankle in the second quarter.

Pistons center Andre Drummond powered for 22 points and 13 rebounds for Detroit, which won for the fifth time in six games.

None of the Hawks' starters played more than 24 minutes, as the team previously locked up the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet

April 1, 2015

Pacers at Celtics – 7:35 PM EST

Indiana suffered a big blow in last night’s 111-106 setback at Brooklyn, as the Pacers lost the tiebreaker to the Nets for a potential playoff spot. Brooklyn pulled ahead of Boston for eighth place in the Eastern Conference, as the Celtics search for some consistency down the stretch following a 116-104 victory at Charlotte as three-point underdogs on Monday. The Celtics have alternated wins and losses in their past six games, while dropping three consecutive contests at TD Garden.

The Pacers picked the wrong time to struggle, as Frank Vogel’s squad has lost eight of their last 10 games following a seven-game winning streak. Indiana has cashed the ‘over’ in six consecutive trips to the court, while allowing at least 101 points five times in this stretch. Boston can capture the season series from Indiana with a victory tonight, as the C’s edged the Pacers in mid-March at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 93-89 as 8 ½-point underdogs. Brad Stevens’ club has struggled against the number with rest recently, failing to cover five in a row when playing with at least one day of rest.

Bulls at Bucks – 8:05 PM EST

Chicago is starting pick things up down the stretch, winning five of its past six games to pull within 2 ½ games of Cleveland for the top spot in the Central Division. The Bulls have won three straight with all three victories coming by double-digits, including a 31-point rout of the Knicks on Saturday night. However, Chicago hasn’t been sharp on the road of late, dropping six of its past eight on the highway since the All-Star break, even though the Bulls did grab a win at Toronto in its previous opportunity last Wednesday.

The Bucks haven’t had much luck with the Bulls this season, losing all three matchups, while scoring 87 points or less in each defeat. In spite of Milwaukee’s struggles since the All-Star break, Jason Kidd’s club is still sitting in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Bucks have lost 13 of 17 games since the end of February, which includes a 1-4 SU/ATS record as a home underdog. The offense hasn’t done much the past five games, scoring 95 points or less four times in this stretch, while cashing the ‘under’ three times.

Mavericks at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City has separated itself from New Orleans and Phoenix for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference with eight games remaining. The Thunder avoided an 0-3 road trip by rallying past the Suns on Sunday, 109-97 as two-point underdogs, as OKC erased a 20-point deficit to win just its second road game in the last eight tries. Scott Brooks’ squad has won 13 of their past 14 contests at Chesapeake Energy Arena, which includes a 104-89 blowout of the Mavericks in the first game after the All-Star break as five-point favorites.

The Mavericks are slumping at the moment, dropping four of their last five games, while posting a dreadful 2-10 ATS record the past 12 contests. Dallas put up just 38 points in the second half of Sunday’s 104-99 setback at Indiana as Monta Ellis sat out with an ankle injury. Ellis is questionable for tonight’s contest, but the bright spot that came out of the Pacers loss was Rajon Rondo’s 17-point, 10-assist performance, just his third double-double since getting traded from Boston in December. Dallas has been the ultimate fade as a road underdog since mid-January, putting together an 0-8 SU/ATS record in this role the last eight tries.

Clippers at Blazers – 10:05 PM EST

Los Angeles saw its seven-game winning streak end in last night’s 110-106 setback to Golden State as three-point favorites. The Clippers squandered a 17-point lead, while losing to the top-seeded Warriors for the third time this season in spite of a 40-point effort from Blake Griffin. L.A. heads back on the road for three games (which includes a contest against the Lakers as the “away” team), coming off a perfect 3-0 trip last week at New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. The Clippers have performed well of late as a road underdog, covering three of the past four, while winning at Portland in mid-January as 3 ½-point ‘dogs.

The Blazers dropped five in a row in late March, but Portland is heating up with wins in its past four games to seize control of the Northwest Division. Portland closes out a three-game homestand after knocking off Denver and Phoenix, while beating the Suns twice over the last week. The defense has stepped up during this hot streak, allowing 89 points or less three times in this stretch, while giving up 87 points in regulation to the Clippers in their past matchup nearly a month ago. Portland held off Los Angeles, 98-93 at Staples Center in overtime in spite of point guard Damian Lillard shooting 1-of-13 from the floor for five points.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Best six, worst six major league teams in one-run games last season.

San Diego, 33-21 Cincinnati, 22-38

Baltimore, 32-23 Houston, 17-28

St Louis, 32-23 Seattle, 18-27

LA Dodgers, 25-20 Toronto, 15-20

LA Angels, 27-22 Oakland, 21-28

Milwaukee, 23-19 Arizona, 23-30

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Gregg Marshall stays at Wichita State, which came up with a $3.3M salary to keep their coach out of Alabama. Basketball is serious business.

12) Where does the Crimson Tide turn now? Steve Prohm? Richard Pitino? If you take a new job, no matter what the money is like, you better be sure you can win there or else you're fired three years later. Or sooner.

11) Speaking of which, the Cubs fired Rich Renteria last fall after one season as manager, when Joe Maddon became available. Would love to see a TV network scoop Renteria up so we can get his insights on what managing the Cubs is like and what getting the boot after only one season is like.

10) Curious to me how Dave Martinez is the only coach who went from Tampa to Chicago with Joe Maddon; most of the rest are still with the Rays.

9) NFL Draft is four weeks from tonight and the top two QBs aren't going to be there. The more I think about Jameis Winston, the more I think I'd pass on taking him. Too many questions; I'm thinking Jimbo Fisher insulated him a lot from public scrutiny, and his NFL coach ain't going to be doing that. Life in the fishbowl can be unpleasant if you struggle on the field.

8) Supposedly, 12 Florida State kids might get drafted this year, which means Coach Fisher has a rebuilding job ahead of him, including starting a new QB. Winston lost one game in two seasons as a starter; he'll be hard to replace.

7) I'm not a morning person, but one of the best things about mornings are sausage biscuits with egg at McDonald's. Sadly, they stop serving them at 10:30, which is way too early for this late riser, but there is hope- McDonald's is going to start testing serving 24-hour breakfast in San Diego this spring.

If this goes well and they start serving breakfast 24 hours a day, the way Jack in the Box does out west, it will be tremendous. Sausage biscuits are terrific!!!!

6) People bet on exhibition baseball games; Pirates played the Orioles on the road last night-- Baltimore used a DH, while Pittsburgh didn't, since their pitchers have to bat next week. Game ended in a 3-3 tie, but if you bet the Orioles, you had an edge.

5) There have been 300+ college basketball transfers; there are 351 D-I teams, so you do the math on how many kids make the wrong decision, or become unhappy with their playing time. Georgia Sate's Ron Hunter says he recruits some kids he knows he can't get, on hope that if they decide to transfer, they'll consider Georgia State then..

4) Speaking of Hunter, how do some of these teams hire new coaches without giving him an interview? He's won at IUPUI and Georgia State, not exactly Kentucky/UCLA.

3) Over/under total for Mets and Bronx Bombers are both 81.5; when was last time the Bronx total wasn't higher than the Mets' expectations?

2) Chris Mullin is likeable; he was a great player, enjoyed his work on TV, hope he wins at St John's, but wasn't it a little weird how prominent Lou Carnesecca was at Mullin's press conference? Carnesecca is 90, has been out of coaching 23 years-- all that went thru my mind watching the press conference was that Carnesecca is still pulling strings behind the scenes, which if true, is an odd way to run a business.

1) Quote of the Day, part II: "20th pick in this (NFL) Draft is the same as the 50th pick, to me." unnamed NFL scout to themmqb.com. All of which means the 2nd round could be almost as much fun as the first round.

Game of the Day: Heat at Cavaliers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Cleveland Cavaliers (-12, OFF)

LeBron James hasn’t fared so well against the organization he left after last season and will try to help the Cleveland Cavaliers gain a season split of the four-game series against the visiting Miami Heat. James and the Cavaliers suffered double-digits in both games down in Miami but did post a convincing 113-93 victory in Cleveland on Feb. 11. James is averaging 24.7 points against the Heat and is two points away from passing Patrick Ewing (24,815) for 20th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Miami has lost four of its last six games and is seventh place in the Eastern Conference with the charging Brooklyn Nets right behind. The Heat fell 95-81 to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday while Cleveland has been off since edging Philadelphia 87-86 on Sunday, when a reporter irritated James by asking if the Cavaliers are in a minor funk. “A minor funk? We were 19-20 at one point,” James shot back. “Ain’t no funk. What’s our record? That’s not much of a funk. We’re playing good ball.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: Books online opened the Cavs at -12.

INJURY REPORT: Heat - G Shabazz Napier (Ques-Hip), F Luol Deng (Ques-Knee), F Udonis Haslem (Ques-Illness) Cavaliers - F Kevin Love (Prob-Back), G Iman Shumpert (Ques-Ankle)

POWER RANKINGS: Heat (-2.9) + Cavaliers (-9.8) + Homecourt (-3) = Cavaliers -9.9

ABOUT THE HEAT (34-40 SU, 33-37-4 ATS, 30-44 O/U): Forward Luol Deng (knee) missed the loss to San Antonio and his availability for the Cavaliers is expected to be firmed up after the mid-day shootaround. Miami did get center Hassan Whiteside (hand) back versus the Spurs after a three-game absence and he scored 10 points. “It’s just about what I can tolerate on the court with the pain,” Whiteside told reporters. “It’s just the performance and how well I can play.”

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (48-27 SU, 37-38 ATS, 29-45-1 O/U): Cleveland is in second place in the East, has won five of its last six games and has posted 16 consecutive home victories and third-place Chicago arrives in town for a nationally televised game on Sunday. That cushion gives the Cavaliers ample opportunity to rest power forward Kevin Love, who took an elbow to his achy back against the 76ers and could again sit out. If Love can’t play, forward Tristan Thompson will move into the starting lineup.

TRENDS:

*Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
*Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
*Under is 4-1 in Cavaliers last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
*Under is 6-1 in Heat last 7 overall.

CONSENSUS: 58.41 percent of users are backing the Heat +12.

April 2, 2015

Heat at Cavaliers – 8:05 p.m. ET
Dwyane Wade had his left knee drained on Saturday night, wasn’t cleared until a few hours before Sunday’s home game against Detroit and then actually went out and scored 40 points, 19 of which came in the decisive fourth quarter. He shot 6-for-20 and finished with just 15 points in Tuesday’s loss to San Antonio, so we’ve time traveled back to a point where Wade is the driving force for the Heat again, a turn of events made all the more interesting by where the four-time defending Eastern Conference champs find themselves tonight.

If the playoffs were to start this weekend, Miami would again be in Cleveland, getting ready to play a Game 1 that would set the tone for a series that would undoubtedly be the most scrutinized of the first round. Although the Heat wouldn’t shrink from the challenge, it would be a lot easier to concentrate on solely basketball if they could creep up to the No. 6 spot and avoid the Cavs altogether. Having received no help from the Bulls on Wednesday, Miami trails Milwaukee by 2.5 games for the sixth seed. Worse yet, Brooklyn has matched the Heat’s 34-40 record, but would lose a tiebreaker since it lost all four head-to-head meetings. Boston is just a half-game back from leaving the Heat out of the playoff mix altogether.

Despite a heightened sense of urgency, the injury woes that have derailed the Heat all season continue to be a major issue. Shabazz Napier is the latest to be lost for the season. The rookie backup point guard underwent hernia surgery on Wednesday. Luol Deng is a game-time decision due to a knee issue and Udonis Haslem has been dealing with a flu bug. Centers Hassan Whiteside and Chris Andersen have been dealing with nagging injuries but playing through them. Eight of the Heat’s last 10 games have gone under the posted total.

LeBron James calls his own plays. Indeed, this week has featured its share of slow news days. Although a controversy has been manufactured over just how much liberty James is given by first-year NBA head coach David Blatt, what’s more concerning is that he comes off an 8-for-24 shooting night in a dreadful 87-86 win over Philadelphia on Sunday. Expect James to be very engaged here, having averaged 24.7 points, 5 rebounds and 6.3 assists in three games against his former team, all numbers below his season averages. The Cavs lost both games in Miami this season, but did pull off a 113-93 win on Feb. 11, the final night before the All-Star break. Kevin Love left the win over the 76ers with a back issue and sat out the last meeting between these teams, but he should suit up here. Iman Shumpert has been upgraded to probable despite an ankle issue. Since the Cavs haven’t played the past three days, guys have rested. Cleveland has won 16 consecutive home games, covering the spread in 12 of them. The Cavaliers are 12-10 ATS as a double-digit favorite.

Rockets at Mavericks – 8:35 p.m. ET

Tonight’s rivalry theme in the NBA continues in Dallas, where the Mavs host Houston in a battle of Southwest Division rivals who make no secret of their dislike for one another. Because both organizations have been in the mix for high-profile free agents of late, their sales pitches have had to include disparaging one another. Dwight Howard chose to sign with Houston in part because of a friendship with Chandler Parsons, who the Mavericks managed to steal this past offseason. Thus far in the season series, the Rockets won both their home games, while Dallas hosted and won the most recent meeting, coming out of the All-Star break with a 111-100 win. Howard has missed all three games thus far, but rested in last night’s 115-111 win over Sacramento to ensure that he’ll be a part of this one. He’s yet to play over 20 minutes in any of the three games since returning from a knee injury, but is averaging 11 points and seven rebounds and posted his first double-double since Jan 19 on Sunday afternoon against Washington.

James Harden scored a career-high 51 points on Wednesday night to help the short-handed Rockets survive the Kings and a DeMarcus Cousins triple-double. He shot 16-for-25 from the field, 8-for-9 from 3-point range, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. The outburst tied him with former OKC teammate Russell Westbrook atop the NBA in scoring average (27.6), though Harden has averaged just 25.0 points per game in the three dates with Dallas thus far. Terrence Jones returned from a collapsed lung and played 32 terrific minutes against the Kings, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks. With Donatas Motiejunas out indefinitely with a back issue, getting Jones’ production back means Josh Smith won’t be asked to do as much as he’s been tasked with in recent weeks. Smith shot 3-for-14 in Monday’s loss at Toronto after playing the most minutes he’d been asked to toil for the Rockets in back-to-back games. Houston is playing the second of a back-to-back and fourth in five nights here. It’s record in these situations is 5-4 in 2015, but just 2-3 since the All-Star break.

Dallas is also dealing with a back-to-back situation, coming off a thrilling 135-131 win in Oklahoma City. The Mavericks shot 61.5 percent and moved the ball beautifully, racking up 35 assists on 56 field goals. Monta Ellis shook off a calf injury that forced him to miss Sunday’s loss at Indiana and led the way with 26 points, while six other Mavs scored in double-figures. Parsons was spectacular down the stretch, scoring 13 of the team’s final 18 points and giving them the lead multiple times with clutch baskets. He’s on a tear as his former teammates come to town, having made 21 of his last 35 field goals (60 percent) and averaging 24.5 points over his last two games. Parsons has shot the ball well against the Rockets but is averaging just 14 points over the three games thus far. Rajon Rondo has played in two games against Houston with Dallas and played them once while still with the Celtics, shooting 8-for-25 from the field. The Mavs are playing in their first back-to-back since March 6 and have lost the last two times they’ve been in this situation. The schedule-makers have forced them to play on the second night of a back-to-back in every meeting against the Rockets this season. Dallas is on a 3-10 run ATS. Betting the over in their games has come in seven of the last 10 times.

Suns at Warriors – 10:35 p.m. ET

Phoenix has dropped four consecutive games after being routed at Portland 109-86 on Monday night. Brandon Knight is against listed as doubtful and has played only once since March 9 due to a severely sprained ankle, shooting 1-for-10 from the field. Point guard Eric Bledsoe has been tasked entirely with running the offense in his absence, but has struggled with his perimeter touch, making the Suns much easier to defend. Bledsoe is 4-for-21 from 3-point range over the last five games and didn't even attempt one last time out against the Trail Blazers. The Suns have seen the under win in 12 of their last 13 games and have seen all three regular-season meetings with Golden State fall below the posted total.

The Warriors bring a 34-2 record at Oracle Arena, not to mention a 13-game winning streak there as they enter April. They will go right back on the road for a three-game stretch against Southwest Division competition before returning to Oakland for the regular season's last five contest. Stephen Curry is locked in a tight race for MVP with Houston's Harden, coming off a 27-point night in a huge win over the Clippers at Staples Center. Since he sat out the Warriors’ last loss to Denver, the team has won the last 15 times he’s played and went 16-1 with him on board in March. Key forward Draymond Green is listed as questionable after missing the Clippers game with a shin injury. Golden State is closing in on becoming the first team since the ’95-’96 Chicago Bulls (72-10) to lead the NBA in offensive and defensive efficiency. GSW has beaten the Suns in the last two meetings between the teams after dropping the first matchup on Nov. 9. The Warriors are 14-11 ATS as a double-digit favorite.

MIAMI HEAT (34-40) at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (48-27)

Tip-off: Thursday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Cleveland -12.0, Total: 199

The Heat look to improve their positioning in the Eastern Conference standings with a win over the Cavaliers Thursday.

The Heat faced the Spurs in Miami on Tuesday and lost 95-81 as 8-point home favorites. Prior to that loss, Miami had won-and-covered in two of its previous three games. The Heat will need to improve on the offensive end though, as they’ve scored 100+ points in just five of their past six games. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, have now won five of their past six games SU after an 87-86 victory over the Sixers on Monday.

Cleveland has, however, failed to cover in two straight games and is averaging just 92.5 PPG in those contests. These teams have met three times this season and Miami is 2-1 SU and ATS in those contests.

Over the past three seasons, the Heat are 4-1 SU but 2-3 ATS when playing in Cleveland. Miami is also 9-1 SU and 4-6 ATS overall in this series in that time. Miami is 23-13 ATS after a game where it failed to cover the spread this season. Cleveland is 8-1 ATS in home games when revenging a road loss of 10 points or more versus an opponent this season.

SF Luol Deng (Knee) is questionable for the Heat, who are without PG Shabazz Napier (Hip), PF Chris Bosh (Blood Clot) and PF Josh McRoberts (Knee) either indefinitely or for the season. SG Iman Shumpert (Ankle) is probable for Cleveland and PF Kevin Love (Back) is questionable.

The Heat have played well against the Cavaliers this season and SG Dwyane Wade (21.7 PPG, 5.0 APG, 3.6 RPG, 1.3 SPG) is a huge reason for that. Wade has absolutely torched Miami this season, averaging 31.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.5 APG and 3.5 SPG in 34.0 MPG in the two meetings between these teams. Wade is feeling healthier after having his knee drained last week and he should be good to go in this one.

C Hassan Whiteside (11.0 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 2.5 BPG) returned from a hand injury to put up 10 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 23 minutes against the Spurs Tuesday. He is averaging 11.0 PPG, 9.3 RPG and 1.3 BPG in three games against Cleveland this season and will need to provide a source of rim protection and rebounding for the Heat.

PG Goran Dragic (16.2 PPG, 4.4 APG, 3.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG) is averaging 19.0 PPG, 6.5 APG, 3.5 RPG and 2.0 SPG in two games against the Cavs this season. Kyrie Irving is not a great defender and Dragic will need to make him work extremely hard on both ends of the floor. He should be able to score on him and will also be able to tire out Irving so that he plays worse offensively.

SF Luol Deng (14.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG) is averaging 17.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 4.3 APG in three games against Cleveland this season. He is going to be matched up with LeBron James in this one and will need to hold his own on both ends of the floor, which has not been a problem this season.

The Cavaliers are looking to stay hot heading into the postseason and SF LeBron James (25.7 PPG, 7.3 APG, 5.9 RPG, 1.6 SPG) will need to play well against his former team in order to come away with a victory in this one. James is averaging 24.7 PPG, 6.3 APG and 5.0 RPG in three meetings with Miami this season. He has had trouble with Luol Deng at times in his career and will have to really bring it on both ends of the floor.

PF Kevin Love (16.5 PPG, 10.0 RPG) is coming off of a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) against the Sixers on Sunday. Love is averaging just 13.0 PPG and 5.5 RPG in two games against Miami this season. He is far too good of a rebounder to be grabbing less than 10 in any given game and will need to be aggressive on the glass against a Heat frontcourt that boasts Hassan Whiteside Thursday.

PG Kyrie Irving (21.9 PPG, 5.2 APG, 3.2 RPG, 1.4 SPG) will really need to play well in his matchup with Goran Dragic in this game. Irving is an incredible scorer and can get it going from deep (41% 3PT) in a hurry. He’s averaging 20.3 PPG against the Heat this season and will need to take some pressure off of LeBron James offensively Thursday.

C Timofey Mozgov (9.7 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.3 BPG) has faced the Heat three times this season and is averaging 13.0 PPG and 7.7 RPG in those contests. Mozgov’s matchup with Whiteside could determine who ends up winning this game.

PHOENIX SUNS (38-37) at GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (61-13)

Tip-off: Thursday, 10:30 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Golden State -11.0, Total: 211

Two Pacific teams matchup when the Phoenix Suns travel north to take on the number one seeded Golden State Warriors on Thursday night.

The Suns have hit a wall in their last four games, losing each by an average of 12.5 PPG as they also failed to cover in each occasion. Their usually potent offense has really struggled during the losing skid, scoring a paltry 90.8 PPG as their opposition put up at least 108 points three times. The biggest defeat came on the road at the hands of Portland on Monday night when Phoenix was getting 8.5 points and was dominated by a score of 109-86. They allowed the Blazers to shoot a resourceful 44-of-86 from the field (51% FG) as the offense couldn’t hit much of anything from long range, making a mere 3-of-16 shots from behind the arc (19% 3PM).

The Warriors have had no problem steamrolling a majority of their opponents this year and they are riding a 10-game SU winning streak (9-1 ATS) heading into this contest. Their top offense has scored at least 106 points in each of the victories as they conquered their opponents by an average of 16.9 PPG. They just completed a four-game road trip when they faced the Clippers this past Tuesday and won a close one, 110-106, as they were getting three points. Golden State outscored its opponent by 10 points in the final quarter to earn the win as it just edged out L.A. with 38-of-85 shots going in (45% FG).

The Suns have not performed very well when on the road as they’ve gone 17-19 SU (19-15-2 ATS) when away from home while the Warriors are an immaculate 34-2 SU (25-10-1 ATS) in front of their fans.

This is the third meeting between these divisional opponents and the Warriors are 2-1 SU and ATS while coming away with victories by an average of 18.5 PPG in the last two. In their last home game, Golden State was giving 10.5 points to this opponent and destroyed that line in a 106-87 win, holding Phoenix to just 36.3% shooting as a group and forcing 20 turnovers.

The Warriors have been great in this series going back three seasons with a record of 8-3 SU (6-5 ATS) and have won the past six when at home. Some interesting trends to watch include that the Suns are a tremendous 48-26 ATS (65%) in all road games over the past two seasons as Golden State is 30-13 ATS (70%) after a game where the team covered the spread this year.

Injuries could have an effect on this game as PG Brandon Knight (Ankle), C Alex Len (Nose) and SG Marcus Thornton (Toe) are listed as questionable for Phoenix and the Warriors are dealing with the injury to SF Draymond Green (Shin) who is also questionable.

Phoenix has no issues getting things done on offense, putting up 103.5 PPG (5th in league) behind 45.4% shooting (14th in league). Where the Suns really tend to struggle is on defense where the team is allowing opponents to score 103.6 PPG (5th-worst in league) on 45% shooting (13th-worst in league.

PG Eric Bledsoe (17.2 PPG, 6.0 APG, 5.4 RPG, 1.7 SPG) has seen his production dip over the recent four-game losing streak with averages of 14.8 PPG, 5.0 APG, 3.0 RPG and 0.5 SPG. He hasn’t been too productive against the Warriors this year either with 14.7 PPG (46% FG), 3.0 APG and 1.0 SPG.

PF Markieff Morris (15.5 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 1.3 SPG) has made 15-of-29 shots (52% FG) over the last two games when he netted 17.5 PPG. He has been horrible (6.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.5 SPG) in the two contests at home against this Golden State group but put up a nice double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) when on the road.

SF P.J. Tucker (9.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.4 SPG) has hit double-digits in points during three of the past five games and has been a pest on defense with 2.0 SPG in that time. He has done little (5.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 2.7 SPG, 1.0 BPG) in the three contests (2 starts) against the Warriors.

There is no match for this Golden State offense as they top the league in scoring offense (109.8 PPG), field goal percentage (47.8% FG) and three-point percentage (39.7% 3PM). They have performed well on defense as well, giving up 99.0 PPG (14th in league) behind a league-best 42.4% shooting.

PG Stephen Curry (23.7 PPG, 7.8 APG, 4.2 RPG, 2.1 SPG) has netted at least 24 points in each of his last six outings and has made 57% of his shots over the past five; including an amazing 28-of-44 from three-point range (64% 3PM). He has not let up against the Suns either with 29.7 PPG (49% FG), 7.3 APG, 4.0 RPG and 3.7 SPG in three meetings.

SG Klay Thompson (21.8 PPG, 1.1 SPG, 43% 3PM) tied with Curry for fourth in the league with his efficient shooting from downtown and has put together a phenomenal last three performances (24.7 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.3 SPG). He’s had some solid showings against Phoenix as well and in two games has dropped 23.5 PPG (47% FG) to go with 1.5 BPG.

C Andrew Bogut (6.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.6 BPG) has had little production (4.0 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.3 BPG) in the last three games and has also done next to nothing (3.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.0 SPG) in three games against the Suns.

Warriors looking to regain ATS success vs. Mavs

The Golden State Warriors saw their eight game ATS win streak come to an end against the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, but they'll be seeking to get back on track at the betting window Saturday against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Warriors, who most recently edged the Suns 107-106 but failed to cover the -12.5 spread, face off against a Mavericks team who have cashed spread bets just three times in their last 10 games. The Dubs have won 11 in a row straight-up and 16 of their last 18.

At the time of writing, books had Dallas as 4.5-point home underdogs for the affair.
