Friday’s 6-pack
Major league leaders in batting average:
.371— Luis Arraez, Mia
.340— Elias Diaz, Colo
.332— Ronald Acuna, Atl
.326— Bo Bichette, Tor
.325— Freddie Freeman, LA
.322— Yandy Diaz, TB

Quote of the Day
“Yeah, they value our opinions here. As a player, I feel like a lot of places I’ve gone, you’re told to do things a certain way and you do those things. But here it’s like, they ask a lot of questions. They want to know what you’re thinking, what you want to do more.”
Giants’ TE Darren Waller

Friday’s quiz
In the old TV show The White Shadow, an NBA player retires and coaches a high school team in Los Angeles. Which NBA team did Ken Reeves retire from?

Thursday’s quiz
Kurt Warner played for the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena League.

Wednesday’s quiz
St Louis Hawks drafted Hall of Fame center Bill Russell in 1956; they traded him to the Celtics for Cliff Hagan and Ed Macauley.

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here, plus Week 7 USFL trends……..

— Monday is Memorial Day, but eight major league teams have the day off. Memorial Day and Labor Day used to be big baseball days, doubleheaders and all. Seems strange that when they made the schedule, they have eight teams not playing on a holiday.

— Celtics 110, Heat 97
Boston led 61-44 at halftime.
Butler was held to 14 points.
Miami was minus-7 (16-9) in turnovers.

— Dallas 3, Vegas 2 OT
Five of seven meetings between these teams this year have gone to overtime.
Pavelski scored a power play goal at 3:18 of overtime for the win.
Golden Knights still lead series, 3-1.

— Braves 6, Phillies 5
This was the Phillies’ 50th game this season, just their 4th game vs NL East foes.

— Rockies 7, Marlins 6
Colorado blew a 6-2 lead in the ninth inning.
Rookie SS Tovar had the walk-off single for Colorado.

— Mets 10, Cubs 1
Mets scored first for the 2nd time in their last 18 games.

— Mariners 3, A’s 2
— Seattle had man on first, one out in bottom of 8th. Ty France hits a pop-up to the shortstop, who lets the ball drop and gets the force at second- the runner on first was fast, so this was a smart play.

Seattle scored later in that inning anyway, but at least the A’s did something smart.

— Cardinals 2, Reds 1— St Louis won 13 of its last 18 games.

— Padres 8, Nationals 6
Nationals took lead, scoring five runs in 7th inning.
Odor hit a game-winning 3-run homer in top of the ninth.

— New England Patriots were docked two days of off-season practices after it was found the franchise violated offseason rules, as far as having players spend too much time in meetings during their off-season program.

— There was an article on the Interweb how NBA personnel people weren’t impressed by the prospects at the NBA Combine last week. 39 players wouldn’t even play in the scrimmages they had there.

43— Freddie Freeman, LA
41— Adolis Garcia, Tex
40— Jonathan India Cin/Matt Olson Atl
38— Mookie Betts LA/Nathaniel Lowe Tex/Alex Verdugo Bos

Quote of the Day
“I don’t want to be a coach……I think that’s the worst job on the planet, for sure.”
Nikola Jokic

Saturday’s quiz
Which NFL team that hasn’t won a Super Bowl has won the most division titles?

Friday’s quiz
In the old TV show The White Shadow, an NBA player retires and coaches a high school team in Los Angeles. Ken Reeves retired from the Chicago Bulls, then coached at Carver High School.

Thursday’s quiz
Kurt Warner played for the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena League.

Saturday’s Den: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

— Horse walks into a bar, orders a drink.
Bartender pours the drink, puts it down on the bar in front of the horse.
He looks at the horse and asks……..
“Why the long face?”

— Detroit Lions haven’t won a playoff game since 1991; they’re favored in 11 of their first 14 games this season. High expectations for a team that last made the playoffs in 2016.

Nationals 12, Royals 10— Luis Garcia went 6-for-6, just third time in Nationals/Expos history a player had six hits in one game.

Kansas City is 0-11 in Jordan Lyles’ starts; he allowed only one run in first five innings, but the wheels came off in the sixth inning, when Washington scored eight runs.

Pirates 11, Mariners 6— Pittsburgh hit seven home runs, third time in franchise history they did that— other times were 2003, 1947.

Reds 9, Cubs 0— Hunter Greene needed 110 pitches to throw six innings, but he didn’t allow any hits or runs in those six innings— he walked two guys.

Phillies 6, Braves 4— Craig Kimbrel earned his 400th career save. Bryson Stott stole three bases, scored two runs.

Rangers 12, Orioles 2— Texas scored 8 runs in 4th inning; Corey Seager hit a grand slam.

Rays 9, Dodgers 3— Tampa Bay is the first team since 1998 to start a season 25-5 or better at home.

Guardians 4, Cardinals 3— Cleveland wins for only third time in last ten games.

Giants 15, Brewers 1— Saw something I’ve never seen before in this game; top of the second inning, Giants’ manager Gabe Kapler is leaning on the dugout rail, eating an apple while his team hit. They scored three runs that inning, so I’m guessing he’ll be eating another apple during Saturday’s game.

Milwaukee SS Willie Adames was hit in the head by a line drive while sitting in the dugout; he got sent to the hospital for observation.

— Thursday night, White Sox pitchers walked 11 Detroit batters; their hitters didn’t draw any walks. First time that happened to the White Sox since July 31, 1984 against the Red Sox.

— College basketball doubleheader in Phoenix December 20:
Arizona State-Northwestern
Arizona-Alabama

— Arizona Cardinals released WR DeAndre Hopkins, taking the $22.6M dead cap hit for this coming season. Hopkins played for Arizona for three years; he’s made the Pro Bowl five times.

— New Orleans Saints brought Jon Gruden in to help them install their offense with their new QB Derek Carr, who played 3+ seasons under Gruden with the Raiders.

— Mater Dei HS in Los Angeles released its football schedule; their first five games this fall are in five different states. Who pays for all that travel?

— George Washington University dumped the nickname Colonials, after students complained that the name glorified violence toward Native Americans and other colonized people. The new moniker is Revolutionaries going forward— I’m guessing it’ll be Revs most of the time.

— Denver Nuggets have a long wait until the NBA Finals start Thursday; they can’t prepare for an opponent yet— they don’t know who it will be. Bit of a dilemma for coach Michael Malone, but a good problem to have, no doubt.

Sunday’s 6-pack
Some updated Week 1 NFL spreads:
— Lions @ Kansas City (-7)
— Texans @ Baltimore (-9.5)
— Jaguars (-4) @ Indianapolis
— Titans @ New Orleans (-3.5)
— Cardinals @ Washington (-6)
— Raiders @ Denver (-3.5)

Quote of the Day
“I have discovered in 20 years of moving around a ballpark that the knowledge of the game is usually in inverse proportion to the price of the seats.”
Bill Veeck

Sunday’s quiz
Which former major league manager was starting catcher for the Colorado Rockies in their first-ever game, back in 1993?

Saturday’s quiz
Minnesota Vikings haven’t won a Super Bowl, but they’ve won 19 division titles. Green Bay has won 16 division titles in the same division, but they’ve won four Super Bowls.

Friday’s quiz
In the old TV show The White Shadow, an NBA player retires and coaches a high school team in Los Angeles. Ken Reeves retired from the Chicago Bulls, then coached at Carver High School.

*********************************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

— Celtics 104, Heat 103
Derrick White put in an offensive rebound at the buzzer to force Game 7.
Boston won despite shooting 7-35 on the arc.
Game 7 is Monday night in Boston.

If you see a replay of the last shot, watch Derrick White inbound the ball, then cut to the corner, where he was wide open but didn’t get the ball, but he pounded the boards and put the missed shot back in to win the game.

White didn’t get any Division I offers when he was in high school; he played D-2 ball for a few years, then transferred to Colorado, and worked his way into the NBA. Hard work pays off.

This is the 151st NBA playoff series where a team led 3-0; it is only the fourth time there will be a Game 7- the others:

1951 Knicks
1994 Nuggets
2003 Trailblazers
2023 Celtics

The other three teams all played Game 7 on the road, and they all lost.

— Milwaukee Bucks are hiring Toronto assistant Adrian Griffin as its new head coach, replacing Mike Budenholzer, who went 271-120 as coach of the Bucks, 39-26 in playoff games— he won the 2021 NBA title, but new ownership changed coaches.

Griffin has never been a head coach; he played in the NBA for nine years— his son plays for the Atlanta Hawks.

— Twins 9, Blue Jays 7
Minnesota hit home runs to centerfield on consecutive pitches in the 5th inning; Toronto CF Daulton Varsho had his glove on both balls, but couldn’t bring either one in.

— AL Central standings:
Twins 27-25
Tigers 24-26
Guardians 22-29
White Sox 22-32
Royals 15-38

By way of contrast, Toronto is 27-26, only a half-game worse than Minnesota, but the Blue Jays are in last place in the AL East.

— In six years with the Angels, Shohei Ohtani has played only seven games in the outfield; will the Angels trade him in July, or risk losing him for nothing next winter?

— White Sox SS Tim Anderson has had 15 4-hit games in his career; eight of them have been against the Detroit Tigers.

— Playing fantasy baseball is fun, it is fascinating, but it can also by mystifying; how else do you explain how some players come out of nowhere to have great/lousy seasons?

Marlins’ OF Jorge Soler is in his 10th year in the major leagues; he hit 48 homers for Kansas City four years ago, after hitting a total of 38 in his first five seasons. He’s hit more than 17 homers in only one other season (he hit 27 in 2021).

He hit his 17th home run Saturday night; that’s the 3rd-most homers he’s ever hit in a season, and now he’s homered in five straight games for the spunky Marlins.

— Cardinals 2, Guardians 1 (10)— St Louis had only two hits; the winning run scored on a passed ball. Brendan Donovan homered for the Redbirds.

— Phillies 2, Braves 1
Phillies’ starter Wheeler induced 22 whiffs on 53 swings.
Braves’ starter Morton induced 22 whiffs on 45 swings.

That doesn’t happen very much, m both starting pitchers inducing 20+ whiffs in a game.

— Mariners 5, Pirates 0— Pittsburgh hit 7 home runs Friday night; they had two hits in this game, one of them a double by Marcano leading off the game. Luis Castillo tossed six shutout innings for the second time this week.

— Rockies 10, Mets 7— Colorado blew a 6-0 lead, but they scored two runs in 7th, two more in 8th to avoid a hideous loss.

— South Florida’s football team has won a total of four games the last three years; their new coach has brought in 41 new scholarship players this season. You can only have 85 players on scholarship, so they’ve turned over half the team since last season.

— If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t)
NL— Braves, Brewers, Dodgers. Wild Cards: Arizona-Giants-Pirates
AL— Rays, Twins, Rangers. Wild Cards: Orioles-Astros-New York

Quote of the Day
“There were things we didn’t like. There were things that were disappointing, on and off the field. There were things that I wish I would have done better, and there were things where we got a chance to see some of the worst in people…….You learn in every situation, the good and the bad. But when you really get tested as we were at Auburn, and it’s the same challenge for your players, your true colors are going to show in how you handle it.”
Former Auburn football coach Bryan Harsin

Sunday’s quiz
Joe Girardi was the starting catcher for the Colorado Rockies in their first-ever game, back in 1993.

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday……..

— Happy 85th birthday to Jerry West, one of the best basketball players of all time, and also one of the best NBA executives ever.

West was a 14-time All-Star; he won a title with the 1972 Lakers, then won eight more rings as an executive. He is also part of the NBA’s logo, quite an honor.

Happy birthday, sir.

— It turns out Raiders’ new QB Jimmy Garoppolo was slow signing his contract with Las Vegas because he underwent surgery on his injured foot in March. Bottom line is that the Raiders can get out from Garoppolo’s contract if this injury continues to be an issue.

His signing bonus becomes part of his salary, which means if the contract gets voided because of the injury, Garoppolo gets bupkis. He had previously agreed to an $11.25M signing bonus. Now his salary is $22.5M, but he has to stay in one piece to get it.

Right now, the Raiders’ other QB’s are:
Brian Hoyer, Aidan O’Connell, Chase Garbers— Garoppolo’s foot better stay healthy.

— NFL teams with no primetime games this season:
Arizona, Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis

— Since 2016, there have been fifteen Week 1 NFL games with a total of 50+

Over in those fifteen games was 9-5-1.

Right now, there are two Week 1 games with a total of 50+:
Lions-Chiefs, and Dolphins-Chargers.

— A’s CF Esteury Ruiz leads the major leagues with 27 stolen bases, so despite how horrible a team Oakland has been so far, they do lead the league in something good.

Astros 10, A’s 1— Jose Abreu hit his first home run this season, in Houston’s 52nd game.

Brewers 7, Giants 5— Giants’ OF Mike Yastrzemski hit a home run in Milwaukee Sunday that would’ve been a home run in 29 of 30 major league ballparks; the one park where it would not have been a home run was San Francisco, Yastrzemski’s home park.

Guardians 4, Cardinals 3— Cleveland is now 11-14 in one-run games this season; no one else in the majors has played more than 20 one-run games (Reds are 8-12).

Braves 11, Phillies 4— Lousy Sunday night game; Atlanta scored seven runs in the first inning, knocking Dylan Covey out in his first start for the Phillies.

Michael Harris made a great catch in centerfield, robbing Kyle Schwarber of a home run.

— Was watching the White Sox-Tigers game Sunday; Detroit TV guys were explaining how Tigers’ P Michael Lorenzen watches video of opposing hitters in the clubhouse in between innings when he is pitching. Lorenzen is 2-2, 3.50 in eight starts this season.

Rockies 11, Mets 10— Colorado scored 21 runs the last two days, wins 2 of 3 in series. Ryan McMahon tied a career high with five RBI in this game.

Tigers 6, White Sox 5 (10)— Detroit has won five of its last seven games, is now only a game out of first place in AL Central, despite its 25-26 record.

Marlins 2, Angels 0— Miami sweeps the Halos in Anaheim, not a good weekend for a team trying to keep one of its two stars from bolting in free agency.

Rays 11, Dodgers 10— LA starter Gavin Stone gave up seven runs in two innings; he got 15 whiffs on 40 Tampa Bay swings, which is good, but the Rays put 13 balls in play, and got 10 hits, which is really bad. Dodgers are hurting for starting pitching right now.

— Remember Bob Denver, the star of Gilligan’s Island? Turns out that after Gilligan’s Island was cancelled back in the 60’s, the actor bought a 14-foot sailboat and moved into a house overlooking the water north of Malibu.

Hopefully he didn’t take the sailboat on any three-hour tours.

— Sunday was the halfway point of the NFL’s offseason; the Super Bowl was 15 weeks ago, and Week 1 is 15 weeks ahead of us.

Tuesday’s 6-pack
NBA scoring leaders this season:
33.1— Joel Embiid, Phil
32.4— Luka Doncic, Dal
32.2— Damian Lillard, Port
31.4— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, OKC
31.1— Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milw
30.1— Jayson Tatum, Bos

Quote of the Day
“I’m going to be gone one day, and I have to accept that tomorrow isn’t promised. Am I OK with how I’m living today? It’s the only thing I can help. If I didn’t have another one, what have I done with all my todays? Am I doing a good job?”
Hayley Williams

Tuesday’s quiz
Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966; what two cities did they call home before that?

Monday’s quiz
Hugh Grant’s movie The Rewrite takes place in Binghamton, NY

Sunday’s quiz
Joe Girardi was the starting catcher for the Colorado Rockies in their first-ever game, back in 1993.

************************************************** *

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— Heat 103, Celtics 84
Miami shot 14-28 on the arc, Boston 9-42.
There were only 19 foul shots taken in this game, total.

Caleb Martin scored 26 points for Miami; on August 7, 2021, the Charlotte Hornets waived Martin, just cut him. No bueno.

Heat was +17 in 20:00 with Duncan Robinson on the floor. Duncan Robinson started his college career at Williams College, a Division III school. Shooting is marketable.

— There have been 151 NBA playoff series where a team led 3 games to none; there have been only four Game 7’s in those 151 series. The team leading 3-0 won all four Game 7’s.

Because of this, I’m suggesting a rule change that will never become a rule, but maybe it should.

New rule suggestion: Any NBA best-of-7 playoff series ends if a team goes ahead three games to none. This would make Game 3’s highly dramatic when a team led 2-0; either they clinch the series or it becomes 2-1 and a highly competitive series.

The new rule would eliminate games, which would reduce revenue which is why it’ll never happen, but it might also increase TV ratings for Game 3’s. Higher TV ratings equal more money.

— Golden Knights 6, Stars 0— Vegas wins this series in six games, makes it to the Stanley Cup finals for second time in their six years of existence.

— So far this baseball season, there have been 75 games in April/May where a starting pitcher gave up 7+ earned runs.

2019— 71 such games
2020— there was no baseball in April/May
2021— 49
2022— 46
2023— 75

Starting pitchers are getting roughed up a lot more this season.

— Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kenny Pickett’s car was stolen from a dealership, with his Steelers’ playbook inside. The genius who stole the car left his own car at the dealership. Not good, except for the cops who arrested the genius.

— Great news tonight in Chicago; White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks pitched Monday, five months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Good to see him pitch again.

— In the Angels-White Sox game, the player who made it to the majors first from every amateur draft from 2019-22 were in uniform:

2019— Andrew Vaughn
2020— Garrett Crochet
2021— Sam Bachman
2022— Zach Neto

— A’s 7, Braves 2— Oakland snaps its 11-game losing skid; Lucas Erceg tossed three scoreless innings in relief, Ryan Noda hit a 3-run homer.

— Cubs 1, Rays 0— Marcus Stroman throws a 105-pitch complete game shutout; he allowed only two baserunners.

— Twins 7, Astros 5 (10)
Altuve’s grand slam gave Houston a 5-4 lead in 7th inning
Royce Lewis tied the game with a 9th inning single.
Ryan Jeffers’ 2-run homer in the 10th inning was the game-winner.

— Random fact: Dave Kingman hit 442 home runs in his career, the most ever of any player from Oregon.

— Philadelphia 76ers named former Raptors’ coach Nick Nurse their new coach. Nurse was 252-179 in five years coaching Toronto, 25-16 in playoff games. Raptors won the NBA title in Nurse’s first year coaching the Raptors, 2018-19.

— 85 college basketball teams are scheduled to take foreign trips this summer; NCAA rules let a team take a foreign trip once every four years. Trips like that help team bonding, give players experience working together, gives teams a head start on the upcoming season.

— One of the advantages of having Amazon Prime on my TV is that it is basically the graveyard for most every movie ever made. Late at night, can find lot of older movies I enjoyed watching, and still like watching.

Stumbled across the 1988 movie Beaches the other night, with Bette Midler/Barbara Hershey. Saw this movie in the theater with my future ex-wife 35 years ago; it was a unique experience.

Very sad movie; Barbara Hershey’s character dies young because of a heart problem. Her best friend, who is a famous singer, tries to care for her and her young daughter. When we saw the movie in the theater, at the end of the movie, everyone in the crowded theater was in tears, it was that sad. You could hear dozens of people openly sobbing.

Never saw/heard anything like that, before or after. 35 years later, the movie still holds up.

Wednesday’s 6-pack
Major league leaders in RBI:
49— Garcia, Tex
48— Alvarez, Hst
46— Devers Bos/Alonso NYM
44— Semien, Tex
42— Olson, Atl
41— Gorman, StL

Quote of the Day
“No, look, you ask everybody that was involved and they thought it was really beneficial for our football team. And look, we’re going to look at any avenue that we can to try to improve. So that was one area we thought, just bringing him (Jon Gruden) in and having the opportunity to sit down and visit with him, would help us.”
Saints’ coach Dennis Allen

Wednesday’s quiz
Who is the all-time leader scorer for the Denver Nuggets?

Tuesday’s quiz
Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966; they previously called Boston/Milwaukee home.

Monday’s quiz

Wednesday’s Den: USFL trends, and other random stuff……..

— Cardinals/Royals are both scheduled off today/Thursday; can’t remember a major league team having two scheduled off days in a row, other than the All-Star break.

— Mets 2, Phillies 0— Kodai Senga’s home/away splits:
Home: 3-1, 1.20 in five home starts.
Away: 2-2, 6.12 in five road starts

This was the first game in seven years where the Phillies didn’t have a runner reach second base; Brandon Nimmo robbed Castellanos of a home run with a great catch in the 4th inning.

— Padres 9, Marlins 4— Sandy Alcantara is having an off year; he led this game 4-2 after six innings, but walked San Diego’s #8/#9 hitters leading off the 7th- they both scored. All four runs Alcantara gave up reached base via a walk, including the #9 hitter twice.

San Diego scored five runs in the ninth inning for the win.

— Arizona 5, Colorado 1— Zac Gallen tossed six shutout innings against a dreadful Colorado team that is 9-18 on the road.

— Reds 9, Red Sox 8— Cincinnati led 3-0 after six innings; if you bet the under, no bueno. Lively threw 5.2 scoreless IP for the Reds. Barreto hit a 7th inning grand slam.

— Cubs 2, Rays 1— Tampa Bay scored once in its last 19 innings; they’re 13-12 on the road, their lead in the AL East is down to 3 games over Baltimore.

— Odds on NBA Finals: Denver -360, Miami +270.

— Bob Myers is quitting as Golden State Warriors’ president/GM; could this be the beginning of the end of Golden State’s great run? Myers is only 48, surprising to see him leave Golden State.

Warriors are approaching some decisions with a payroll/luxury tax that could approach $500M in 2023-2024- Draymond Green and Klay Thompson, two cornerstones of their great run, have contracts ending soon.

— If you’re a fan of the NBA, I highly recommend a visit to Las Vegas for NBA Summer League, which takes place July 7-17 at UNLV. Every team is represented; you can sit there all day and watch 4-5 high-quality games, all in air conditioned comfort.

You’ll see lot of NBA celebrities there; all the coaches/GM’s, some former players who do TV work now. Two games happen at once, one in Cox Pavilion, one in the Thomas & Mack Center- they’re a short walk apart.

The games are highly competitive, because everyone playing is fighting for a job; just be careful betting on the games. Not every team plays its best players every game; they give a look to some of their bench players, so caution is advised when wagering.

— College basketball star Caleb Love is transferring from North Carolina to Arizona; originally he was going to transfer to Michigan, but they wouldn’t accept all his credits from UNC, so now he is off to Tucson, where he will be much warmer.

— Last five College World Series were won by Oregon State and four different SEC teams. In the last five title games in the CWS, seven of the ten teams came from the SEC.

— Eight teams from North Carolina are in this year’s College World Series.

Quote of the Day
“This is a special group. This group has been able to overcome a lot of different things, handle a lot of adversity, setbacks, things that have not gone the way we wanted it to go. Instead of having that collapse our spirit, it allowed us to develop some fortitude and grit collectively and give us something to rally around, which was each other.”
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra

Thursday’s quiz
Keith Hernandez is well-known for helping the Cardinals/Mets win World Series; what team did he finish his career with?

Wednesday’s quiz

Tuesday’s quiz
Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966; they previously called Boston/Milwaukee home.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud………

— We start today with some very good news:

Last weekend, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris saved a kid from drowning in a Las Vegas pool at the Encore Hotel; the boy was three years old and had no pulse when Morris got involved to try and help save his life.

The boy was discharged from the hospital 24 hours later. Very good news.

— Mets 4, Phillies 1
Phillies are 5-11 in their last 16 games; they scored 7 runs in their last four games.
Kyle Schwarber went 10-87 (.115) in May; seven of the 10 hits were home runs.

— Mariners 1, New York 0 (10)
New York scored 10 runs in each of its last three games, before this.
Cal Raleigh had the walk-off single for Seattle.
Mariners improve to 7-12 in one-run games.

— Nationals 10, Dodgers 6
Garcia’s 3-run homer in the 8th inning was the game-winner.
Keibert Ruiz homered twice for Washington.

— Marlins 2, Padres 1
Miami scored twice in ninth inning for the win.
Backup C Fortes had the walk-off single.
Snell pitched six shutout innings for San Diego.

— Arizona 6, Colorado 0

Tommy Henry tossed six shutout IP.
Bryant/Profar didn’t play; Blackmon is away from the team. Rockies looked like a dead team.

— Angels 12, White Sox 5
Ohtani homered twice, knocked in four runs; less than two months until the trade deadline. Will the Angels keep him or deal him at the deadline? He is a free agent this winter.

— Reds 5, Red Sox 4— Cincinnati is 5-0 on this road trip.

— Tampa Bay Rays win a lot despite spending a lot less money, so they obviously know what they’re doing. Just wish I knew the rationale behind the opener, using a lesser pitcher to start a game against the top of your opponent’s batting order.

Basically, the six best pitchers on just about all teams are the five starters and the closer; why would you start a game with someone other than those people?

Lot of teams have toyed with the opener; not many teams have dome it in a playoff game, which tells me they really don’t believe in it. “Hey, Tony LaRussa used to do it, we should, too”

Tampa Bay people don’t broadcast their philosophies, which is smart.

— There is a college football bowl game played in Orlando called the Cheez-It Bowl; apparently, they’re changing the name to the Pop Tarts Bowl, with an ACC team playing a Big 12 team.

I freakin’ love Pop Tarts; best kinds are blueberry and red velvet.

— Houston Astros’ hitting Alex Cintron got tossed from Tuesday’s game in the third inning, after the home plate umpire got into it with Astros’ SS Jeremy Pena; as a result, Cintron was fined $500.

Astros players stepped up and paid the fine for Cintron.

— To me, it is weird when a DH bats 9th; why would the worst hitter in your lineup be a designated hitter?

— Jake Marisnick played for Detroit Wednesday; the man must know how to pack:

2013-14— Marlins
2014-19— Astros
2020— 16 games with the Mets
2021— 65 games with the Cubs
2021— 34 games with San Diego
2022— 31 games with the Pirates
2023— 9 games with the White Sox
2023— One game with Detroit.

— Las Vegas blackjack players lost more than $1B last year, 2nd-highest amount ever. That is billion, with a B.

More casinos have changed payouts on getting dealt 21 from 3-2 to 6-5, which obviously makes it a lot more difficult to turn a profit.

— As of now, Kentucky Wildcats’ basketball team has only seven players; five freshmen and two sophomores. The transfer portal still has some good players in it, but coach Calipari has some work to do this summer if Kentucky is going to have another winning season.

— Purdue’s basketball got great news Wednesday; big man Zach Edey announced he’ll be back with the Boilermakers next season.

— A’s pitcher JP Sears in May:
5 starts— 3.25 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, An excellent month.
