I can't stress enough that if you want to be successful betting on boxing, DO NOT RELY ON BOUTS CONSIDERED TO BE HIGH PROFILE.
In this fight, you had Fres Oquendo, who has somewhat of a reputation for being a dirty fighter, who had climbed the rankings fighting B level fighters (Etienne and Harris to name a few), and who did not seem to be anywhere near the caliber of a fighter as Byrd entering the fight.
On the other hand, you have the highly touted Chris Byrd, who has been in there with the some of the best in the division ( both Klitschkos, Ibeabuchi, and Holyfield to name a few), who holds the IBF Heavyweight title, and who is known best for his slick style of boxing which has baffled opponents into defeat. This all made Byrd a huge betting favorite coming into this fight.
Historically, bad decisions have been rendered when such disparities exist between the profiles of the fighters.
I am not saying that it is right, but this has been the history in many cases.
I did not lean towards either fighter to win because I knew that Oquendo was dangerous. He did surprise me with his ability to outland Byrd in the bout.
But the moral of the story is: If the seemingly much lesser opponent allows the fight to go to the scorecards and does not totally dominate throughout the fight, there is a great chance that he may get robbed. Especially when a title is at stake.
My tip to anyone who likes to bet on boxing and win consistently is to look for mismatches. Look for matchups where one guy has power and better boxing skills than his opponent. You will provide yourself with a greater than 50% chance of winning this way. I know it is easier said than done, but it is the way to win in my opinion.
In addition, always take advantage of propositions when they become available. They usually surface for the title fights or high profile fights. This is one way to avoid becoming a victim of the politics in boxing. If you have a really good feeling that someone will not be KO'd, then bet on it. The scorecards will have no bearing whatsoever on this type of wager. Fight Goes The Distance hedged with Byrd by KO, in essence was Not Oquendo by KO.
