Now what did they say that was not true. This guy I played golf with long ago used to put his golfball in his mouth. We told him that was nasty and you could get anything doing that. 5 years later he died of cancer.

Not sure about cancer but a report published by the British Medical Association, warned golfers to stop licking their golf balls for luck or to clean off dirt or grass stains etc.
The report stated that weed killers used on golf course fairways can cause serious illness if ingested by licking golf balls. Turns out a 65-year-old duffer contracted hepatitis after he licked his ball at a course that used Agent Orange to kill weeds.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
There is also a chance of balls in play picking up actual human waste from various fertilizers used to keep courses green.
Many golfers will pick up their ball once it's on the green and lick it clean once the ball has been marked with a coin, there is no telling what pesticides and weed killers etc. the ball has picked up on it's journey from the tee to the green.
