Just got back the other day and my friends said that you cannot drive downtown once a week because of the number of your license plate...CR officials saying they have to do something because of the gas crisis...what's up with this? My take is that if you can afford the gas and want to drive, then go for it...there are many conscious people out there who would start using other modes of transportation like buses or such to save money...anybody have any idea how this is working out? And how much is the fine if you are caught driving downtown on the one day you are not supposed to? And what are the boundaries? I figure if officials would fix the lights and have some traffic cops out there, everything would run smoother...Judge Wapner told me that because my plate ends in 9, that I cannot go downtown and visit my watering holes on Friday nights...

A couple of things - it's not just downtown, it extends a pretty long way. You can find a map of the boundaries here:

http://insidecostarica.com/dailynews/2008/july/10/nac01.htm

From that article: "The fine for violation is ¢5.000 colones, plus 30% (¢1.500 colones) for the Pani, the child welfare agency. According to minister González, drivers can only be fined a maximum of twice on a single day for violating the restricted area."

I think the idea is not just to save gas but to reduce traffic in general.

Yes VD, it is based on the last digit of your license plate. Here is a link on the costa rican license plate law. It is stupid and personally a waste of time, rather than just redoing the roads to fit capacity levels.

yeah redoing the roads its that easy

It isn't as easy as it is in the states, as you bring up. CR has the same roads since the 1800's which were made for horse drawn carriages. What they did to remedy it for cars was make every other road a once way street because the streets were too narrow for two lanes.

The best way to remedy traffic in CR is fix the potholes, then issue a new law that requires people to stay in those wonderful lines called lanes or "Carriles" in Tico Talk. If people stayed in their "carriles" then we would have less breaking, less accidents, and better efficiency in road travel.

$10 fine if you get caught?

pfffft....

I am joining the club that will be paying that every Friday. It costs me the same as taking a cab and a bus.......well, I rather keep my stuff under my custody :nohead:

The only way they MIGHT stop people who can simply pay that.....is with a points system in your drivers license......but that is still light years away

I have news for these maniacs.......if they truly want a democratic way to lower the fuel usage....and depending on how much usage the thermal plants are having these days..........set up periodic/programmed blackouts

Those NOONE will be able to 'avoid' (Well generators but thats truly an ultraminority) ........its easy to enforce as there is no enforcement........no bribes.........effect measured directly and totally democratic........since rich and poor live within blocks of each other.

Yeah, on Tuesday's I have to leave the Toyota Prius at home and drive the Humvee instead. They say it's suppose to save on gas, but I can't figure that one out.

They've increased the "peak-time" restriction to include most the outer city (including the autopistas). I believe the all-day restriction (6am-7pm) covers only the old restricted area, "core downtown".

Final plate digit 0,1 are Mondays? I guess it's sequential then? (2,3 Tuesday, 4,5 Wednesday, etc...?)

It is alleged the restrictions are increasing gas usage as traffic has to find long detour routes, and traffic cops are making traffic worse by stopping cars.

No Adam, 1 and 2 are on Mondays. 9 and 0 are on Fridays. Atleast that is what it says. They had to make the 0 on Friday probably to make things more confusing as usual.

Costarican roads are designed for less than half of the cars that are running through the city now, so this might be just one of a series of atempts to clean the streets of heavy traffic...

BTW, they want to change a law to help traffic flow and decrease gas usage, change the accident law, require vehicles immediately move out of traffic for any non-injury accident.

The entire bridge from Heredia to La Uruca/San Jose was blocked the other day because one Hyundai broke the tail light of another Hyundai, and transit/INS didn't show up for hours.
