Just watched the Doc on Jose. What a life. I have always liked the guy and still do to the day. Between him and Bo, they were the 2 greatest baseball athletes I have ever seen in MLB during their day. On another note, I wish that they could prove how other players in MLB back in the 50's, 60's, 70's took drugs that would be illegal today (early when Jose was taking, they were legal). I personally believe Babe, Lou, Mick and many many more took substances. They should be looked at the same way. A blade cuts:103631605

A clown, don't think so. Research my man:103631605. Greenies were taken by many MLB players back in the day, including some of the best ever. They should be looked at the same way as others. Truth is plain to see.

agree! jose is the only one that has told the truth about mlb

2ND That:aktion033

Remember, lots of the MLB players years and years ago took amphetamines. Pound them like you do Jose:hitting:.

"An overview of amphetamines and their place in baseball:
HISTORY
Amphetamines were given to members of the U.S. Military in World War II to help them perform their duties. When veterans returned they brought amphetamines with them. It was quickly discovered that they helped performance on athletic fields. Jim Bouton was the first person to shine a light on the use of the drugs with baseball in his book "Ball Four." Major League Baseball banned 30 stimulants in their drug agreement with the players in November 2005.
EFFECTS
The drugs help players deal with the grind of a 162-game season. They mask fatigue, increase arousal, increase alertness, increase aggressiveness and reaction time. Some players also claim to see the ball better, which may be because of the increased alertness.
RISKS
Amphetamines are addictive and a user can overdose on them. Short-term effects include dizziness, headaches and kidney damage. Use can lead to strokes and seizures. Long-term use can result in paranoia and hallucinations.
"They're far more risky than steroids," said Charles Yesalis, an expert in performance-enhancing drugs. "They can stone-cold kill you. It's far more dangerous. They're not even in the same room with steroids."

My God...As a long time baseball player (and I mean, long time) I can see the people in this thread probably don't play the game...

I used to play 5 to 9 baseball games a week (NOT softball, baseball against mostly college players) during the summer while working a full-time job...Since I don't do drugs of any kind, amphetamines were not an option for me on nights where I was tired and needed a "pick-me-up" o prepare for a competitive game...I loaded up on Mountain Dew...

But comparing amphetamines to steroids is ridiculous and shows a lack of knowledge of the game of baseball...Yes, both are illegal -- now...That's where the similarities END...

Amphetamines increases your metabloism, gives you a rush, makes you "alert", gives you short-term energy when you are tired, but need to accomplish the task at hand, whether it's long hours for the military overseas, whether it's working overtime at work facing a deadline, or whether it's "preparing" for a baseball/football/basketball/hockey game...

It gives you no advantage...You cannot throw the ball harder or hit the ball further...If you were wide awake and didn't need to take amphetamines, you'd be the same exact player as you are if you did take amphetamines...

Now steroids...Totally different story...I never believed steroids gave you a real advantage years ago...Boy, I was naive...Because I saw players in my semi-pro league who were on steroids...There was a guy in Double-A who's agent told him to retire for a year because he was on roids the year MLB really cracked down big time (before the 2005 season)...His agent told him to get off the juice and then come back later in the 2005 season once the juice was out of his system...

Well, this guy hit bombs...Our league was in its last year with aluminum bats, but he used wood...And he hit balls way further with wood than anyone could with aluminum...Balls off his bat looked the same as other players' bats, but balls just kept going and going and going...Tape measure shots...And he could throw very hard...All steroids...He was huge...I finally realized what everyone meant by saying players on steroids had an edge...They do...

Amphetamines just keep you awake and wide-eyed...

Steroids can make you throw 5-to-10 mph faster and adds mucho, mucho feet to your fly-balls...

Nobody disputes that both were used in baseball and it was widespread for a long time...But there is a big difference between the two in terms of giving you an "advantage"...

Did me loading up on Mountain dew give me an unfair advantage?...No...

So with amphetamines, I just don' see the real "advantage"...

Steroids...I have seen first-hand the advantages you get...

Brewers, your statement of "But comparing amphetamines to steroids is ridiculous and shows a lack of knowledge of the game of baseball...Yes, both are illegal -- now...That's where the similarities END..." shows knowledge, not lack there of!!! They mask fatigue, increase alertness, increase aggressiveness and reaction time. Some players also claim to see the ball better, which may be because of the increased alertness. Fact is, it does not matter to what degree it helps, it helps. Back then you did not have players throwing 100MPH either. You take players from 40+ years ago, no matter what the sport, very few would be able to compete with athletes of today.

It sounds like you’re comparing the effects of caffine + sugar (mountain dew) to a DRUG that “exerts its behavioral effects by modulating the behavior of several key neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.”

You drank mountain dew to load up, that’s why you stayed semi-pro.

Jose Canseco hero or idiot? I don’t know. He was broke so he had to tell a story.
