What does a professional player do in this case?

If winnings are supposed to be claimed , how does it work if you lose?

You cannot claim losses overall. You can claim losses to offset winnings.

JMan,
You really shouldn't be gambling. Our elected officials have clearly said that "there is an established link between gambling and terrorism." Are you a terrorist JMan? I send my hard earned money to Powerball and it's 45% return (25% after taxes) because I'm not a terrorist like you.

J Man:

AG Ashcroft has secret documents, they can't reveal.

I got a pipe into Washington, so here's the scoop...

Terrorists don't buy lotto tix or play slots.
This is why there's no Gov heat on those enterprises.

But Bobby Bin L, bets a ton in Antigua and Costa Rica, so that's why the Gov heat is on.

Don't repeat this to anyone, it's top secret stuff, and probably in violation of a couple of dozen secret laws on or in the process of going on the books.

Joey's right. (According to my souces) NASA had a prop up on 9/11 :

Will a plane smash into the towers
Yes +10000000000000
NO -4000000000000

Apparently there was some heavy syndicate action out of South Central Saudi on the Yes.

Of course NASA stiffed them, but that's another issue

Don't listen to this horrible advice. Bottom line is this, you can only claim losses to offset your detailed wins. Period. If you make money from anything else don't even TRY to offset it with losses unless you want the IRS to jump on you like a goal line defense on 4th down. This is an instant and certain move that will send off tons of buzzers in their computer. To their thinking you probably are lying about how much you won so not only can they nail you by disallowing your over-claimed losses, but they will try to nail you for the wins you didn't claim. And the scary thing is how they calculate "wins". Wins to them is a winning session. If you go to AC or LV and make runs at 3 different casinos in a day, they treat those as 3 seperate activities. If you win $200 at one and lose $500 twice at the others you still are supposed to say you "won" $200 and they claim your losses. Since you probably aren't going to keep this log book if they can figure out the $200 they won't let you offset the $200 because you didn't keep proper records so your negative $800 day will just get worse!!! Whatever you do don't follow the advice of the person listed here unless you genuinely plan to offset winnings, and even then don't take it too far. They might call your "bluff" and disallow some of those receipts if its obvious that it wasn't you. Don't try to lie to them and say "yeah at Belmont for the 4th race on the 18th of June I bet $100 to win on the 3, $25 to place on the 2, $50 exacta box 6 and 7, and for good measure $200 to win on 1". And they will say "so why are none of these horses on your $144 pick six wager?"...

You are exactly right Wild Bill. They aren't stupid. Say for example you have 95% of your ticket as win and Place Bets. But on one day all you had was Triples and Superfectas. They COULD say--so why did you switch the type plays you make for this one day?? Bottom line it's best to be consistent in my opinion.

Sorry, just something serious like this isn't something to joke about unless you make it perfectly clear because I am sure there are thousands out there that do just this and get screwed in the end. So many lurkers out here wouldn't figure out that they couldn't do it from your answer so I just tried to make it 100% clear what the law is so there are no mistakes.

Some good information posted above you guys. The IRS will accept a ledger for documenting gambling wins and losses. I know it sounds a bit old fashioned but it is totally acceptable. Just make sure the ink for the entries in January looks older than the ink for December's entries.

Several years ago a friend of mine won 25K on a sequential RF at the Golden Nugget in LV. He filled out all the IRS forms as required. He took a thousand over to the craps table and dumped it in short order. He asked the pit boss for a receipt documenting his loss, the suit told him it wasn't their policy to give receipts for losses (or wins for that matter). He took the mans name down, the craps table number, the time of day, and the date. According to him he claimed an offset of the full 25k as losses at the craps table and was never called on it by the IRS.
