I still don't understand why people bet on exhibition games. How can you rationalize wagering on games played by guys who will not be playing in a few weeks? Or betting on a game based on what a coach said (We want to win this game)? I'm looking for some solid reasoning from anybody, including panther, to convince me I should start thinking about wagering on the pre-season because I just don't see enough positive things about it to consistenly win over the long haul. Please post your thoughts here.

Big Lou

P.S. - In my opinion, the best value in betting football is the post-season, not the pre-season.

Nah, just stick with what you are comfy with...Some of us degenerates just think it's worthwhile.

lou,

if you look at certain teams (with the same coaching staff) you will notice that some seem to "try harder" than others during preseason, historically anyway...

do your own thing, i don't think anyone is telling you that you should bet on preseason. And their is no reason why people do it. They might do it for fun until the reg.season starts or people do it so they can get up a little before. For whatever reason it is.. who cares!! I am sure they are not wagering their whole roll or half their roll on these games,as they do in regular season. At least i hope not. So WHO CARES if they wager on preseason or not.

it's the SIENFELD rationale, "because it's on tv."

unlike the reason they post odds, betting on preseason is truly,"for entertainment purposes only".

or maybe because it's better than getting jabbed in the eye with a sharp stick.

see ya, lou.

The same argument could be made for many sports and bets like nascar, big brother, wrestling, many props etc...

If the bankroll supports it, do it.

To each his own.

Lou,

the majority of these games are pretty much toss-ups. You can argue against this, but it's worked for me. Since these games are relatively 50% propositions, there is value taking the points, and there is add'l value on the dog ML. If you dont handicap baseball this is something that you might not recognize.

The most value is on the 2nd halves, I wont give away the exact logic, but the same system that I use during the regular season has worked so far. And it has worked damn well, I posted a lot of my plays. I am leaning more and more to weighting my plays heavier on 2nd half lines than to full games. I have a few 2nd half angles that have hit 60% or higher over the last 20 years.

if you don't have at least one bullet in the gun, it isn't really russian roulette.

Lou - For me it's all about situational analysis. I have about five very strong situations that I use for preseason. They have worked for the last 20 years. If you can find a reason to bet it, I don't see anything wrong with beting it. I only play these games for 1/3 my normal play.

Besides weighing weather or not you think a team is going to try to win over wasting 3rd downs on running plays to evaluate their running backs, I think that if a team has a solid coaching staff the younger players are going to play better and will have the uper hand. Mariuci is a solid coach, look what the Lions did. The Eagles always play solid, the games only 1/2 over but they came out strong. They have great offensive and defensive schemes. New England is another disciplined squad that hammered a Giants team that came out with apparantly no desire at all to win the game, they were testing out their running backs more than anything it seemed. Tampa Bay obviously has a great coach. I have to admit that it looks like Holmgren's offense is starting to genuinely click in Seattle... But I'm 3-5-1 so far, what the hell do I know. I think I know more now than I did a week ago, at least. You have to research the games before going on your instict, you never know what players are going to play and how much time they'll be in for. And Quincy Carter blows goats.

I only bet %1 of my bankroll per game during the preseason, just some good old fashioned American fun. There is no real reason to bet the preseason, you're right.

You need to treat preseason capping as a separate sport. Don't bother comparing it to the NFL. There's money to be made here and that's always the top priority.

Lou- I think pre-season NFL is like any other sport. If you think you have an edge and it works for you then you should play it. I think the NFL is unhandicappable and the worst officiated sport there is. I watched about a half the of Eagles-Saints game and referee Johnny Grier was in mid season form. LOUSY.

The game stinks. The players can't tackle. They commit the same penalties over and over again. The QB tries to complete a pass through 3 defenders. The coach calls for a 5 yard pass play on 3rd and 10. Even when you cash a bet, they'll send you to the nuthouse on the way to cashing the bet.

You're looking for someone to convince you to bet on pre-season football, because you want to WIN! at pre-season football. It's that simple.

Marv Levy's Bills were one of the best pre-season plays of all time. Last year, Spurrier covered the Over several times. The pre-season has it's own patterns.

Are you ready for a 26-week season?

No one has mentioned depth - and the high level of play on teams with a lot of it. When guys are competing for that 2nd 3rd and 4th spot - if they have any talent - it can get good just from a viewing perpective, and if yer up enough on picking out whos who in the second half, then you might wanna pound a few bucks on the team with the depth and the guys that are gonna come out brawling in the second half - at least as matched up against the teams that have most of their positions wrapped up and that maybe dont have as much depth - or that have veteran backups that don't really need to prove anything - at least they aren't fighting for that backup job.

Any thoughts?
