Conference Championship Round News and Notes

The Conference Champinship Round saw a huge increase in overall performance from the contest group compared to the Divisional Round. If you recall, the contest group did well in the Wild Card Round (a 59% winning percentage for the group's overall picks and a 63% winning percentage for the group's LOTW picks) but then took a major hit in the Divisional Round (a 41% winning percentage for the group's overall picks and a 40% winning percentage for the group's LOTW picks).

Here is how the contest group did last weekend in two categories: the overall group (everyone's picks combined) and the top ten (the top ten points leader's picks combined), both in terms of our "locks" and all three of last weekend's picks combined.

Locks (Entire Group): 18~15 (55%)
Locks (the Top Ten): 6~4 (60%)

All 4 Picks (Entire Group): 39~27 (59%)
All 4 Picks (the Top Ten): 12~8 (60%)

Going Forward

Just a reminder about the format going forward:

For the upcoming Super Bowl you need to submit 2 plays (1 LOTW and one regular play).

And it looks like we better install a Tie-Breaker with so participants within striking distance at the top of the leaderboard.

Tie-Breaker

When submitting your Super Bowl card, please include a prediction of the Overall Total Offensive Yardage for the Super Bowl (i.e., the total offensive yards gained by both teams). In the event that we have two or more people tied for overall points at the conclusion of the Super Bowl, the overall playoff champion will be the person whose prediction is the closest without going over the actual number.

Please try to avoid guessing the exact same number as someone else. Make it like the "Price Is Right" (is that show still on TV?) or something and go 1-yard higher or lower if someone has already picked the exact same yardage total as you.

Any names that appear in RED on the leaderboard below are names that did not post any plays last week. This is totally understandable that some people may have lost interest or determined that they are mathmatically out of contention. I eliminated names of people who have not posted for two weeks in a row, or who missed one week and are way at the bottom of the leaderboard. OFFICIAL RULES

Pick Submission Deadlines

While most people feel it's easier to submit all four of their picks at the same time, you may submit portions of your card on different days if you would like to do so. However, I will impose one single deadline on each game day regardless if you are playing the early game or the late game. All picks need to be submited before kickoff of that day's earliest scheduled start time.

Lock of the Week

You must indicate which pick is your Lock Of The Week. If you forget to designate one of your picks as your Lock of the Week, I will default your very first pick as your designated Lock of the Week. This is not a punishment, but it merely ensures that you at least get a chance to earn an extra bonus point with one of your plays in the event that you completely forget to do so.

Point System

Each of your picks are worth one single point if you cover your side or total. The designated Lock of the Week pick will be awarded two points if it covers for you.

Point Spreads

Each week I will release an official contest Point Spread and Total for each game. This point spread, and only this point spread, will be used for the grading of each players picks. I will attempt to put up numbers that are the most common numbers across the board with two caveats: (1) I don't want stale numbers and will sometimes nudge them a bit in the direction that they appear to be going, or in a direction to ensure more interesting and competitive betting, and (2) every number will always have a hook (0.5) attached to it to ensure no pushes ever occur in the contest.

Playoff Pick Format

We will use a 3 - 3 - 2 - 2 pick format for the playoffs due to the number of games available in each round. In the Wild Card Round and the Divisional Round you will be asked to make 2 regular picks and 1 Lock of the Week pick. And in the Conference Championship and Super Bowl Round you will be asked to make one regular pick and one Lock of the Week pick.

Well, it does not look like the numbers will be budging anytime soon. As normal, there will be a lot of late movement, but it will be too late to affect our numbers for this contest. The tough part for me is the fact that I need to push this number either a half-point above or a half-point below the current number to avoid any ties should the final spread land on "7". And despite the early betting precentages favoring ARI at about 56%, I went the opposite way with the number in anticipation of late action and wanting to put the most competitive number out there ahead of time.....
