Urgent- Call your Representative in Congress and tell them you OPPOSE H.R. 6870- The Payments System Protection Act of 2008

There is a House Financial Services hearing on this bill today.

This bill if enacted into law throws sports betting under the bus. It will accelerate enactment of the UIGEA regulations against sports betting sites.

This bill will make it even harder to deposit and withdraw money from your online sportsbooks.

Call your Congressman or Congresswoman at (202) 224-3121 and tell them you vote and you oppose H.R. 6870.

Because the bill says sports betting is clearly illegal, so start to enforce that right away. Then take a look at every other type of remote gambling item by item.

I have it from a good source that the bill will be even harder on sports than the initial version that has been circulated. And the initial version was not good for sports as written.

never mind, i see what you are saying. basically it makes playing poker fine but sports betting absolutely not fine

“The Poker Players Alliance believes HR 6870 is a strong compromise bill that will provide much-needed clarity to the UIGEA through a formal rulemaking process, while immediately enforcing existing gambling laws that ban online sports betting. Chairman Frank has been and continues to be a leader in this area and we look forward to a successful markup in the Financial Services Committee next week.”

“Chairman Frank is doing the right thing by saying it is unfair to burden U.S. financial service companies with the job of the Internet gambling police at a time when their undivided attention ought to be on the economy,” said Jeffrey Sandman, spokesperson for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative, in a press release distributed on Thursday. “The reality is that UIGEA is dangerous to the payments system and unlikely to stop anyone from using the Internet to play poker, bet on horses, or engage in other types of wagering.”

It throws sports under the bus.

On Tuesday, September 16th, the House Financial Services Committee will hold an emergency mark-up of legislation that attempts to address this urgent matter. The bill is a compromise that will make online sports betting illegal, but delay the implementation of rules governing "games of skill." Instead, the bill would require formal rulemaking so that the impact of the new regulations on communities like Second Life can be fully understood.

I thought the bastard Barney Frank was going to regulate both poker and sports betting. It looks like this will go through now with the biggest opponent being on the Republican's side.

It's pretty simple. The Poker people actually paid Barney the money, and the sport-betting people did not.

even if this passes can it or will it even be enforced? what else could they do other than arresting people making bets (i don't think that would happen) or going overseas to arrest "illegal" bookmakers?

They can make strong enough threats to bookmakers to stop taking action from the U.S. all together.

Depends on your definition. This looks like it gives a green light to poker, but drops the hammer on sports.
as if a bank or financial institution would be able to identify whats poker and whats sports.

Bunch of hogwash my man. Never going to be passed anyway

The latest incarnation of a bill to effectively abolish an online gambling prohibition measure, was being voted on Tuesday. Its chances of becoming law this year are close to zero but nobody will fault Congressman Barney Frank for his tireless efforts.

A House panel is scheduled to vote on the new bill that would require federal agencies to define unlawful Internet gambling so banks and other financial institutions can comply with the ban against online wagers. The banks contend that the language within the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) is too vague especially since some online gambling venues such as horse racing have been exempt.

Just introduced late Thursday, the bill calls for the Department of Treasury and the Federal Reserve to consult the U.S. attorney general's office in creating a formal process to make the definition.

Many online gambling operators, especially sports book owners, have expressed reservations about any such bill, contending that their activities will be singled out as "illegal".

The bill is the latest move by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, to clear up confusion about how to enforce the ban since President Bush signed it into law in October 2006.

I think the offshore climate is already shaky without this bill even being passed yet.

Players truly have the odds against them in these ages.

1. sweating the game
2. sweating the payout

It has already affected my way of capping wondering if I'm going to get paid by the book or not. It will be a scary situation if this bill does go through.
