White House Condemns South Korean Human Embryo Research
By TERENCE HUNT, AP

WASHINGTON (May 20) - President Bush on Friday said he would veto legislation that would loosen restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and expressed deep concern about human cloning research in South Korea.

''I'm very concerned about cloning,'' the president said. ''I worry about a world in which cloning becomes accepted.''

White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy said the work in South Korea amounted to human cloning for the sole purpose of scientific research. ''The president is opposed to that,'' Duffy said. ''That represents exactly what we're opposed to.''

South Korean researchers, funded by their government, reported producing human embryos through cloning and then extracting their stem cells. It is a major advancement in the quest to grow patients' own replacement tissue to treat diseases.

The president also threatened a veto of legislation that would clear the way for taxpayer money to be spent on embryonic stem cell research.

A measure by Reps. Mike Castle, R-Del., and Diana DeGette, D-Colo., would lift Bush's 2001 ban on the use of federal dollars for research using any new embryonic stem cell lines.

''I made very clear to Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayer's money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life - I'm against that,'' Bush said. ''Therefore, if the bill does that, I would veto it.''

Bush, in his fifth year in office, has not yet exercised his first veto. The White House also promised a veto this week of a highway bill if it exceeded the administration's spending limits.

Bush began the day at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast where he was cheered for urging people to ''pray that America uses the gift of freedom to build a culture of life.''

The remark was a public reaffirmation of his position on sensitive issues such as abortion and stem cell research.

Bush recalled the legacy of the late Pope John Paul II and said, ''The best way to honor this great champion of human freedom is to continue to build a culture of life where the strong protect the weak.''

Bush won 52 percent of the Roman Catholic vote in last year's election and got the support of 56 percent of white Catholics, defeating the first Catholic presidential candidate from a major party since John F. Kennedy. In 2000, Bush narrowly lost the Catholic vote.

not only has this jackass started a war based on lies, waste away a surplus and basically be in bed w/ the extreme right, but now he won't let medical breakthroughs occur for the disabled and sick. it's just another issue that bush will be on the wrong side of. :sad3:

what really hurts is that i'm a quadripeligic and will be eventually cured from this research, but not because of US efforts thanks to W. i'll be on a plane to korea or china asap when it's available there. it's just another feather in W's cap to being known as the worst president when he's looked back upon in 20 yrs.

Do you remember the boxing referee (and TV courtroom personality) Judge Mills Lane? Last year he had to go to the UKRAINE to receive stem cell injections into his brain to try to repair damage he had due to a stroke. The US had only just authorized its first clinical trials of the same procedure. Pretty sad when a country that is supposed to be the most advanced is medically way behind a country like Ukraine that is just emerging from the shadows of the USSR, and it's all because of idiots like George Bush who use the issue to pander to their constituency.

Of course he doesn't want to use taxpayer money for research, there is none left, after funding his war.

Im pretty sure Mr Lane is a staunch Republican too. Wonder how he feels about his party now? I wish him well anyhow(Mills Lane). Beat Mills on the river in a big pot at Harrahs once and he threw his cards against the wall! Temper, temper! One of the few times the river ever helped me.

Personally I don't think Bush even understands the issue. He just sees it as a way to drum up support. If he spent a little time researching what the benefits of this research are, I don't see how he could veto it. But then again, this is Bush we are talking about.

Trying to hold the US back while other countries leave us behind. That will be his legacy.

I'm guessing he's a little bit more informed than anyone here on the RX on stem cells and the risk, reward factor.

And I'm positive that you should highlight the word GUESSING. Bush and informed in the same sentence? Where is the "mis-" or "ill-" or "un-"? :icon_conf

I'm guessing that W knows less about the issue than everyone who has posted in this thread, even The Right Wing.

LOL....highly doubtfull and many arm chair wanna b's flock when this subject arrives. The question I always ask and has never been answered is.....if this was to revolutionize the whole medical field how come not one indepedant company has came forward and even used all their resources, money, technology? Seems odd because I'm sure with all the bio companies one of them would get awful rich if they wanted too.

it's because these companies have left the US to do their work in countries where they're not blinded by the religous right. :sad3:

not sure where I stand on this issue, however if my wife and I had an embryo that was alive and was from her egg and my sperm there is no way in he11 i'd want it destroyed for experimentation.

you wouldn't want it used to help other living humans than rather just being thrown away?

It would just mess with me. I'm all for you donating your future kids to science for experiments though.

Stem cells, embryos, cloning, et al. There's nothing the religious retards are going to do about it; it's all going to happen sooner or later, in other countries if not here. And as soon as the first quadriplegic wheels into the operating room and walks out on his or her own two feet the debate will be over.
