BUSH CUTS FUNDS FOR DAVENPORT POLICE; STRAPPED POLICE HAVE TOUGH TIME PROTECTING BANKS

Today, during President Bush and John Kerry’s historic visit to Davenport, it was reported that three Davenport banks were robbed during the events. According to a report on television station KCCI of Des Moines: “Davenport police say they could not comment and were helping to direct the political leaders’ motorcades.”

While the president and Sen. Kerry should certainly be protected during campaign stops, it should not go unnoticed that Bush has drastically CUT funding for Davenport police officers since taking office.

In 2001, the Davenport police office received $346,372 from the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant program. While in office, Bush cut their funding to $297,125 in 2002 and $244,781 in 2003. [www.ojp.usdoj.gov]

“Obviously, police departments are stretched thin across the country, and this is a concrete example of what happens when the president decides it’s good policy to cut funding to police officers,” said Brad Anderson, communications director for America Coming Together (ACT). “Providing protection to presidential candidates when they come into town is essential. However, you have to wonder if this would have happened if the police were given adequate resources and the president really placed homeland security as a higher priority than tax cuts for rich people.”

Davenport police budget gets cut by $50,000 a year yet there's $300 billion dollars to blow to watch Iraqis vote before they dive into civil war. Why are stories like these no surprise anymore?

But then again I can understand the cuts from the standpoint that a bankrupt America has no money and therefore the cops really don't need as much manpower to guard empty banks.....

Has Bush been to any stuff for casualties in Iraq/Afghanistan yet?

To my mind he should be doing something every few months if he's got any respect for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for what is a core issue of his term in office.

Lets remember our priorities here please. When W does the right thing by honoring officers who died the previous year lets leave him alone and show some respect. I care little for the man and his policies but we must try to respect the office. Thats the main problem anymore , Rush and his America held hostage mentality does not belong in our great nation. Sorry, can't do it capn, this clown will do anything for a photo-op. He can't attend one funeral for a fallen service member but he can make cynical appearences at a police funeral. I'm just amazed he didn't show up in uniform.
