Had to tell everyone this story. I was in Burbank last week for meetings. I arrived on Tuesday evening. My counterpart and I went out for dinner in downtown Burbank (Village). After dinner as we are walking to our car we decide to have a smoke. We were watching a cop talking to an Asian guy and we were wondering what was going on. After the kid walked away the cop walked over to us. My counterpart said to the cop "busy evening on this corner huh?".. The cop responded " it sure is--people crossing the streets when the light is red and people smoking". We looked at him with a puzzled look. He said " I am going to have to write you a ticket for smoking. There is a complete non smoking ban in Burbank City." HOLY FUCK!! We showed him our licenses and said we don't even live here could we just get a warning. He said "fight it in court". And proceeded to write us a $350 ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am still floored..what is next no swearing? 9pm curfews? I am sure the bars love this law! Even more depressing is neither one of us smoke more than a pack a year!!:smoking::smoking:

Fascism at its finest. You always get that with liberalism and California is the perfect example.

That's messed up. I live in SoCal and didn't even know that. Surely it is only downtown Burbank though? I can't see it being city-wide. :smoker2:

I'm actually not too surprised by this. For years they have had "designated smoking areas" on college campuses (I live in WA and they have had it for a minimum of 10 years at least here), where you see this huge pack of people crammed into a tiny little gazebo looking thing. It was only a matter of time before they took it to the streets.

I get bans at parks and beaches because too many smokers are careless with their butts. But in a downtown area with bars & restraints? Revenue generator, plain and simple.,,,,Nothing to do with 'public helath', secondhand smoke, etc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.......... in the downtown area where by law nobody is allowed to smoke. Downtown encompasses a large geographic chunk of real estate, and according to the new ordinance, smoking is prohibited in the following areas:
All City parks and facilities and all areas within 20 feet
Within 20 feet of all entrances, exits, and open windows of buildings open to the public
All sidewalks and pedestrian areas in Downtown Burbank and all areas within 5 feet
Chandler Bikeway and all public areas within 20 feet
Outdoor dining areas and all areas within 5 feet
Outdoor waiting lines and service areas and all areas within 20 feet
Outdoor gathering places and event areas and all areas within 20 feet
City transit vehicles and station platforms and all areas within 20 feet of station platforms
Pedestrian areas at outdoor shopping areas and centers and all areas within 20 feet
All elevators
Any area designated as non-smoking by the property owner or business
I'd be curious to know what kind of signage/stickers are posted?
Dick move by the cop regardless.....An out of state ID should be an automatic warning.
Looks like it's a $200 ticket also. I'd just ignore it and let it go to warrant if you are only in Cali a couple of times a year and have no plans to ever move here.
GLENDALE:
Where you are allowed to smoke?
Smoking is allowed at private homes, in private cars, and on private golf courses, if their owners allow smoking there. Also, smoking is allowed on city streets and sidewalks, as long as it is at least 20 feet away from other areas open to the public.
The following types of places MIGHT have smoking permitted areas:
1.City owned property
2.Outdoor dining areas at restaurants
3.Apartment buildings
4.Hotels and motels
5.Shopping malls
6.Auto dealers
7.Tobacco shops
Just small stickers and signs saying no smoking 20 feet from entrance. Smoke free enviroment, breathe easy shit like that..
Dick move by the cop regardless.....An out of state ID should be an automatic warning.
Agree 100% He must of had a quota or something.. I hate cops, they write bogus tickets all the time, someone has to pay their huge salaries..
Never talk to a cop unless you absolutely have to, not even to pass the time of day. You never know when you're going to run into a power-hungry prick.
If you see a cop out in public walk briskly the other way. Maybe he'll be too fat and lazy to catch up with you to write you a ticket.
its a shame thats how people feel these days, but with the way things are you're completely right.
In Illinois, you're not allowed to smoke 15 feet from a building I believe. Banned in bars, clubs, eateries, etc.
We ate at Gordon Biersch--Love that place. Their garlic fries are outrageous. The cop did say "there is a sign". I said where he said over there (and pointed about 20 feet down). I said "sir I can not see that sign due to the huge tree in front of me blocking the view!!" He then walked over and said there is a sign on the door as well. I said "who reads doors anymore" His comment was "take it up with the City Council they are the ones pushing for stronger enforcement". The sign on the street said "No Smoking". Without having the slightest idea this law was passed who would know what that means..ambiguous at best especially since I was OUTSIDE!! Never would I have given it a second look.
Yeah the fine is going to be around $200 --I hope. I called the Burbank Courthouse and they said the ticket is still not in system and they have no idea what the fine is. WTF is up with that?? Also looked on their website and it stated that if I do not pay it will automatically dedcut points from my drivers license. Can't dodge this one..
On a side note we at the funnest restaurant ever and they had good food. Tokyo Delves Sushi bar on Lankersham in West Hollywood. The place is a total party. Here is the website..Gyno or any other So Cals you must go with a group of people. I guarantee a good time..We went with our corporate office and everyone said it was the best business night out ever! Non-stop laughter, dancing and comedy.
